Several MacRumors readers have reported receiving shipping notices from Apple indicating that their Magic Mouse (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/10/20/apple-introduces-magic-mouse-a-multi-touch-mouse/) orders have been shipped. At its introduction, Apple announced that while the new multi-touch Magic Mouse is bundled with Apple's new iMac models, the mouse would not be available for standalone purchase until the end of October. The new shipping notices suggest that Apple will be meeting that goal, although customers are still waiting for the device to appear in retail stores.

Apple yesterday released a pair of software updates (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/10/27/apple-releases-magic-mouse-software-updates/) that will allow Snow Leopard and Leopard users to access the full range of functions on the Magic Mouse. Full support for the Magic Mouse is also apparently being built into Apple's forthcoming Mac OS X 10.6.2 update (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/10/20/magic-mouse-user-guide-suggests-mac-os-x-10-6-2-release-in-near-future/), which will eliminate the need for future mouse purchasers to install the separate mouse update once that Snow Leopard update is released.

LMAO! :D

Well a Bluetooth Update 1.0 for Windows came out just at this moment for Boot Camp users. Sadly no good since I am not using Boot Camp (which one day I would love to once I get a iMac with more Hard Drive space or upgrade my Hard Drive and Memory on my iMac late 2006 version).

Getting back to the article this just hints out 10.6.2 might be near for a release, I am just hoping soon, but no rage for me if it doesn't.

I read on the reviews on apple's website that this mouse doesn't have a middle mouse button. Can anyone verify that? Does anyone know if this mouse will be able to support 3-button clicks?

One could say that's their whole ideals across their range of products?

I haven't used the mouse but I am purchasing it on Friday, well either that or a mighty mouse. I doubt the Magic mouse can be THAT bad :apple:

Try using ANY apple mouse with Maya (or other 3d apps) and you'll instantly hate it. you gotta have all three buttons to make it efficient IMO. Middle button = pan, Left = rotate/orbit camera, and right=zoom. The Mighty Mouse was instantly nicknamed the Mighty Turd in the agency I worked at.

I've been to the Apple Store and felt this mouse. I was anticipating it for a long time (since first rumours of the touch sensitive surface) and I am VERY disappointed. The edges are sharp, not unlike the edges of a MacBook. They are uncomfortable to hold, even for a few minutes. Daily use will likely be quite irritating.

Great idea, beautiful looking but it's like no one at Apple ever picked one up and felt it. This is not a computer, this is the thing your hand sits on for hours. What it feels like matters.

Terrible execution.

If true than some where they found a issue with the seed and they have to work on it again or they want to fix more problems and add it to 10.6.2. Like someone said before on another thread here, even if this update fixes most of the issues there will still be some sort of hole they missed and no one here wants a Microsoft Windows style of non stop updates. I should post my Microsoft Windows update history one day here I think it goes it least 2 through 3 pages long and most of the updates are all security than comes the Service Pack updates OH BOY!

Exactly my thought; tried it out, couldn't stand the sharp edges. So uncomfortable. Tracking was slow, even at max. Not something I could use regularly, but YMMV. So many people purchasing sight unseen, so there will either be a lot of complaints, or a lot of cognitive dissonance kicking in.

I used it today at the Apple store and it really is the best mouse they've designed. If you want a three button mouse you can forget this one but if you want one that works just like the iPhone's multitouch but also having the added benefits of a mouse you'll love it. Right clicking seems to finally work as intended. Personally I think it's darn near perfect for most (casual) users.

Edit:
Sharp edges hurting your hands!? You must grip the thing to hard then. I had no such problems with it, but then again I use mice with a lose touch.

Also, tracking is slow on all mice on OS X unless they use their own drivers because Apple limits how fast it can go. That's why you install the MouseZoom (http://benh57.com/mousezoom.html) preference pane. Been using that for ages.

Yup. about time. was gonna call up Apple, but it finally said Prepared for Shipping. Can't wait!
By the way, who votes negative so many times? I mean, there will be a post about Apple profit is up and there's like 4 negs.
Is there someone going, "Apple made profit? No, no, I don't like that." "New product? no, no, this won't do." Unless it's competitor companies doing it.

Doesn't hurt, just uncomfortable and unnatural-feeling. Very surprising to me for an Apple product to be designed this way, but it might have something to do with the cap-sense technology underneath.

Did Apple really ditch the customisable Squeeze and the Middle Click for un-customisable two-finger Swipe? I mean I still think that the touch-scroll is amazing and it's worth every compromise, but the mouse shouldn't be less handy than the trackpad! I mean on the trackpad you can scroll, zoom, swipe back and forth, and activate Exposé All Windows and Exposé Show Desktop, I'm sure there could be a way to do at least Exposé with the Magic Mouse, for example, Swipe Two Fingers Up or Down?

This evening a local Apple Store drone told me "definitely come back tomorrow" which i took to mean "we have deliveries but we havn't put them on the system yet" or something similar. So get the proper tool for your trade.
Again... expecting a mouse that ships with a consumer device to be adequate for high end design work is not realistic.
I've worked with Maya and it requires not just a multibutton mouse but a bull whip and a cattle prod. Apple's goal is to make its devices simple. I think the new mouse addresses the needs of the VAST majority if its customers properly.

BTW, this is the same arguement that hard core chicklet keyboard fans make against the iPhone, and the answer is the same. Its only limited by its software, which will advance as needed.

I think Apple designs a mouse to be used as an everyday mouse, knowing that there are 3D navigation devices (like the Spacepilot). I use Photoshop a lot and noticed that the old Mighty Mouse is too clumsy to do precise selections compared to other mice, but then I realised that I should be using a graphics tablet anyway, and that seriously makes every mouse seem useless for Photoshop.

I think that if you're really a professional, you have to invest in specialised devices for what you do. Just like if you're a gamer, you want a mouse with a cord and with lots of customisable buttons, not an everyday mouse like the Magic Mouse.

The Magic Mouse is the best mouse I've ever used. I love being able to scroll, without a stupid scroll wheel. I thought it looked very short (a low profile) at first, but I find my hand just hovers above it very easily. If you're finding it has hard edges, maybe there's a better way to hold it?

If I were left handed, I would like the fact that it works on either side of the keyboard. As it is, I find it works perfectly for my kids' small hands. They can grip it easily and click the one huge button without trouble. If I could only teach them to stop touching the glossy screen with their greasy hands...

It must have to do with the way you handle mice because I thought it was pretty comfortable. Oh well, to each his own.

agreed, I stopped by my local Best Buy yesterday to check out the new iMacs, and for the 10-15min I used the new Magic Mouse, I can't say I ever thought it was anything less than comfortable to use (once I got the hang of how to rest my hand on it)... on the other hand, I was not impressed by the fact that even the slightest pressure on the front of the mouse causes it to click, especially since probably 90% of the times that it clicked, I didn't want it to- I guess it could be because I'm used to the ultra-smooth surface of my MacBook's glass trackpad and just needed to adjust to the more "plasticky" feel of the MM, but I digress.

overall, it's still a great little mouse, i just wish it was more affordable! (I'm thinking I'll wait until I can afford to buy one of the top-specced 27" iMacs, that way I don't have to pay "extra" for the Magic Mouse)

I bought a Logitech USB wireless mouse for like £58 and it is really really bad you can only scroll up and down, tracking is ridiculous, and you have to have that lame USB receiver, so I think £55 isn't much for a wireless mouse, AND it has multi touch!

yeah because you live in Cupertino! Steve's family / semi-friends and all the other apple employees not privy to be on the elite "free gift list" had to order from the online store like everyone else.. and the bosses don't want to hear moaning and groaning anymore since they have heard it for over a week now... so they decided to rush a batch from the factory to cupertino before everyone gets into the office tomorrow. They just threw yours on the truck/plane as an added bonus since there was already a shipment headed to where you were.

How will this affect the battery life in the new 13" MBP (june 2009)? Im new to MAC and im wondering if it will severely drain the battery from the 13" MBP as it uses bluetooth.

I always turn off bluetooth to save power to make my MBP battery last longer. If say i normally get 5 hours time surfing/typing/playing games on the 13"MBP while the bluetooth is turned off, how much time will i get now if i start using the new Magic mouse with bluetooth? Will the time decrease to 4hours? 4.5 hours? etc?

Thanks

Actually, I called them asking why it didn't ship yesterday. They told me that it should have shipped yesterday, so they upgraded me to Overnight for free. It's coming from Ontario, which should probably take two days to arrive on standard shipping. The best part is... that they put me on FedEx Overnight Priority, so it will arrive in the morning. :D

I haven't had a truly enjoyable Apple mouse since the one I got with my PowerMac 6100 way back in the day. That a company can come up with the iMac, iPod and iPhone but can't design a decent mouse just defies explanation. And that Apple's mice are inferior to those from Logitech and *shudder* Microsoft ...well, that's just plain embarrassing.

I'm holding out hope that the Magic Mouse is great (I haven't tried it yet), but based on my experience with Apple mice over the past 10 years (starting with the abominable "puck"), I'm not getting my hopes up.

Regarding the sharp edges...

The height of the tables in most Apple stores actually make you grip the mouse in a VERY unnatural position. My first though was "damn, I hate how this feels in my hand." But you really need to use this with your hand and arm at "desk level" if you know what I mean. Totally different experience.

It's not the most ergonomically designed but definitely feels good in your hand and the edges aren't a problem.

I completely agree. Sounds amazing in theory but when I tried it in person, it was pretty bad.

Your bad experience surprises me. I tried it for the first time today at a Fry's Electronics. I was VERY surprised as to how well it worked. A lot better than the other mouse Apple put out.

I am actually considering purchasing this one.

I am not quite sure what you are talking about. I used the mouse today for the first time. It was nice.

For those complaining about the three buttons, remember this is a mouse that is totally software defined. The mouse driver update may very well "add" a third button option to the list of programmable things this mouse can do. However, I am quite happy with my Microsoft wireless mobile mouse, which has a very fast tracking across the entire screen with very little wrist movement so I'm probably not going to upgrade Mice!

I doubt the Magic mouse can be THAT bad :apple: It's from Apple...of course it's gonna be that bad! Considering Apple is the company that put the mouse on the map, they have a horrible track record when it comes to mice. I tried the magic mouse out. Ugh....no thanks. A mouse is something that I really prefer tactile feedback. Real buttons and a real scroll wheel.

Apple gets an A+ for effort for trying out new ideas. Absolutely. Their mice always look great too - great design. But for practical use, their mice are just plain horrible. I think what they need to do is start with one simple concept and take it from there. The concept is..."Let's design a mouse that people will not throw away the minute they open the box." ;)

The Magic Mouse is Ok. But why can't you tap-to-click? Why can't you use a three finger swipe to bring up expose? (akin to the 4-finger swipe on the MBP). Why can't you pinch or rotate a photo with two fingers?

Those seem like very reasonable suggestions to include on the 'multi-touch' mouse.

Magic Mouse ≠ trackpad. Some of the gestures just wouldn't be practical or necessary with a real mouse at your disposal. But I digress; this has been discussed to death in other threads, let's stay on topic... I pre-ordered one through Amazon, I knew it wouldn't come as fast, but they don't have an estimated date yet and won't let me cancel it either because I ordered it with some other stuff with free shipping. :p

Something tells me that :apple: has yet to exploit the Magic Mouse full capabilities, would still hold on not calling it a Pro Mouse yet.

For 2 button action: press and hold one finger while the second conducts the action.

For 3 button action: press and hold two fingers while the third conducts the action.

Possibility for a 4 button action: press and hold three fingers while the fourth conducts the action.

I will hold out till the Magic Mouse matures. I do like its design. What is the battery life projected for regular use.

Tap-to-click would defeat the purpose of a mouse that clicks. Same goes if you're asking to move the cursor by moving your finger across the top shell (and then reassigning the scroll to another action). Mind as well not buy a mouse at all. I have to admit though, I had the urge to move the cursor by moving a finger across the mouse, but that would mean scrolling instead.

Three/four finger swipes might be a bit of a challenge. It's just over 2 inches wide. Try swiping on that while keeping the mouse from moving (if it does). Pinch or rotating is a must-have feature that Apple should add though.

I agree this Magic Mouse has a future for more gestures (hopefully easy). However, I don't think the size/popularity of the mouse market is worth Apple's time/effort to create another "Pro" mouse. This is as pro as it can get in my opinion, just need better software and it will live for a while until it reaches it's full usable capacity.

I tried the Magic Mouse today - nothing short of phenomenal. It fits the hand like buttah, and responds as well as one can imagine - much better than I expected.

No finger lifting is necessary at all while clicking or scrolling, which is silky smooth. Page swipes are effortless. It has an impressive build quality, and is highly ergonomic.

I feel that I can be more productive with this new design than with any Logitech mouse I've used - it's that good. The only thing missing at this time, are gestures for

activating Exposé, Dashboard, Spaces, and rotation. I imagine these will likely be implemented in the next update, although I could easily live without them, based on

how well it responds, feels, and performs - definitely worth experiencing.

More form over function from Apple.

I heard that exact same complaint when the mouse and the GUI first came out back in the 80s. People called it form over function, claimed that real computer users used a keyboard, blah blah #$%@&* blah...

I don't understand the complaining about this, especially from people who haven't used it yet. No surprise, I guess. I don't speak Luddite.

I tried one, and the scrolling is SO much better than a tilt-wheel or ball. And I very much like the shape (especially the thinness for laptop travel).

I consider it to be the ultimate 2-button scroll mouse. Some people need more than that: 3, 4, 5 or more buttons. When I play Quake Wars I’m one of them! Exposé functionality would be welcome for power users. But for the basic mousing that MOST users do (and never go beyond) this is the ultimate mouse.

(I don’t consider it a 4-button mouse because I consider the forward/back swipes to be an awkward token feature that few will use. Just like the old squeeze buttons were.)

Went to the Apple store to check this out during lunch today.
Looks nice, feels decent, and scroll is nice..................and that's about it.
The left and right features in my opinion are a total gimmick, yah it's "cool" but not practical, the mouse slides all over the place trying to do the 2 finger gesture. Plus having to lift the left finger to do a right click really sucks, for me atleast since I've been using a buttoned mouse for years.
It's a nice "consumer" mouse for basic users. Definitely not a powerhouse or packed with that many features.

My MX Revolution eats the magic mouse alive. Only down side is it's a bit large (but very comfortable and ergonomic) and the receiver is rather large and an eyesore sticking 2 inches out of the USB port.
Freewheel scrolling is like butter, quick search button for google or spotlight, on the fly access to Spaces, Desktop view, Expose and even Dashboard if you wanted. Mine is set so the wheel that the thumb rests on (secondary wheel), simple flick up brings the desktop, flick down brings up Expose and pressing the secondary wheel brings up spaces.

Personally, the Magic fell short with Usability, and apple went with the WOW factor (as it does with most of it's products).

I ordered mine from the apple web store when they where announced and I just recieved it today. Unfortunately, with 10.6.2 not being out it currently makes a very beautiful paperweight as it is unrecognised by my mac.

Here are a few images next to my current mighty mouse (apologies for my messy desk!):-

Top View
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_BIGJE88JhoU/SumZ-_hg-iI/AAAAAAAAANA/_Xt9B2yh5Mw/s1024/IMG_1924.JPG

As you can see it is much longer than the mighty mouse, I find that it fits into my massive hands much better than the current one does. Its nicely ergonomically shaped and my fingers rest where the buttons should be naturally. It is also lighter, but only a by a few grams (probably, haven't actually weighed the thing!) Its light enough to be noticibly lighter but its still heavy enough to be tacktile.

Side View
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_BIGJE88JhoU/SumZ_PQB2lI/AAAAAAAAANE/sWij9cRq3NI/s1024/IMG_1927.JPG

It is much slimmer than the mighty mouse, and as you can see there are no noticable side 'force' buttons (which I currently use for exposé). There is nothing from apple detailing what they plan to flll the 'space' that the force buttons currently fill but perhaps functionality will be built into the new mouse update to cover for the lack of these buttons.

Bottom View
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_BIGJE88JhoU/SumZ_pb6n2I/AAAAAAAAANM/4zMWB9EjFOo/s1024/IMG_1931.JPG

You can just make out the silver slide switch at the top right that turns the mouse on and off (in the black section) as well as the tiny pin hole above it where the 'on' led is. As stated the mouse comes with batteries installed, which is a nice touch. Normally other manufacturers just don't bother. There are black strips each side of the battery door on the bottom which are the 'runners' and make the mouse much, much smoother running than my current mighty mouse is. The case is also aluminium apart from the top surface. The battery cover is a little more difficult to open than the mighty mouse, but it's not like you have to open this door every day.

Now can't wait for the OS update, it's supposedly much better tracking too so I would like to have a proper test before I give it a thumbs up overall. It certainly gets one for design and feel though!

you realize there is an update from Apple for Snow Leopard to use the new Magic Mouse features???

kingtj
Oct 29, 2009, 09:41 AM
No, I don't see why/how it would support the 3rd. mouse button as a click.
The Mighty Mouse couldn't either. It only worked because it had a rolling scroll-wheel ball you could depress to act like the 3rd. button. That's lacking in the Magic Mouse.

Most likely, Apple figures you have no need for a 3rd. button if the mouse supports all sorts of gestures on its surface. Anything you used to assign as button 3 can be assigned to some sort of finger movement across the top of the Magic Mouse instead.

(Obviously though, this gesture stuff depends on the software supporting it. There's an unlimited number of possible finger movements they could code as "valid, unique gestures" to perform functions. It's all about Apple coming up with practical and user-friendly ones that people can easily remember, and writing software that lets you assign them to the things you'd like software to do. I think we're seeing only the very beginning stages of what they might eventually do with a Magic Mouse.)

I read on the reviews on apple's website that this mouse doesn't have a middle mouse button. Can anyone verify that? Does anyone know if this mouse will be able to support 3-button clicks?

[QUOTE=Raymen;8726627]I ordered mine from the apple web store when they where announced and I just recieved it today. Unfortunately, with 10.6.2 not being out it currently makes a very beautiful paperweight as it is unrecognised by my mac.

you realize there is an update from Apple for Snow Leopard to use the new Magic Mouse features???

You beat me to it, I was going to inform jameskk of the update!

Anyway, purchased mine from store today. Got it home, worked as soon as paired. Installed the driver and gestures are now also working! :-)

Very easy to use and very responsive. 10/10 from me - no need for 3rd button in my opinion

WTF happened to my 4 button apple mouse?!!!!
I used the side buttons to switch 'spaces' and the scroll button for 'expose'!
Now I'm stuck with a 2 button mouse again. I find the swipe a bit awkward and sensitive. Anyone agree? I love the scroll feature but I hate not having spaces on the side buttons!!!

So apple forced you to turn in your previous mouse when you bought the new one?

Certain people need to PAY ATTENTION (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/10/27/apple-releases-magic-mouse-software-updates/) to the news at the MacRumors home page instead of just spending all their time in the forum!

And, for those Mighty Mouse lovers out there... REJOICE! With the release of the Magic Mouse, Apple lowered the price on the Mighty Mouse! Keep on enjoying fondling your mouse balls! :)

My Magic Mouse is on the FedEx truck for delivery today! :)

Just gor back from the Apple store in Leicester, primarily for an iPhone Genius appointment, but i thought i'd ask anyway… and they've got them in stock now, was sold the 1st one! :P paired it, ran software update, rebooted, now having a great time with it, only thing i've missed is the expose on the side buttons, but i've just given that to the top cornet of my screen :)

Just bought mine in Apple store Brighton.

It's great.. worked out of the box except for scrolling.

Downloaded the Leopard upgrade and it now scrolls.

At last I can retire my poor old wired MS mouse; feel a bit sorry for it. We've worked together for years! :-(

This is a lovely product, exactly what I wanted and I strongly recommend it to all.

i.e. it doesnt click or anything, it just slots in to place very easily and feels like a good shake of the mouse will dislodge it from its position?

More form over function from Apple.

I just hooked mine up. Works well, scroll is a lot better/smoother and fast scrolls decelerate smoothly. The two finger gestures work reasonably well.

I'm sure I'll find something to pick at, but haven't yet.

4.5 hours? etc?

Thanks

I would estimate that Bluetooth uses the least energy of all the things that could drain your battery (DVD drive, heavy processing, screen brightness, Wi-Fi, etc.) On a five-hour battery, bluetooth might shave off 10 minutes of your battery life. I wouldn't even worry about it, unless you're doing critical work with 30 minutes left on your computer's battery!

FedEx delivered about an hour ago. So far, I like! The edges do feel a bit sharp, but certainly not uncomfortable or anything. It's just "different". :)

I LOVE the scroll with momentum! It makes short work of LONG web pages! :) Tracking seems very precise and clicking, frankly, seems more defined and definite than the Mighty Mouse. THUMBS UP!

For a moment, I was concerned about the missing Mouse Preference Pane settings for the secondary (right) button. It just had on or off and I like to use my right button for Exposé All Windows. But then I looked in the Exposé Preference Pane and found I could still turn All Windows on for the right button!

So far.... two thumbs up! I purchased just one and I'll see how it goes. I have to let my wife borrow it for a few days to see if she likes it. I suspect I'll be buying one for her too! :)

I purchased my Magic Mouse today from the Apple Store in Charlotte, NC and I love it. I am replacing a BT Mighty Mouse. For those interested:

The BT Mighty Mouse with 1 AA battery installed weighs 103g
The BT Magic Mouse with 2 AA batteries installed weighs 99g

(each mouse was measured on a Pitney Bowes digital scale)

Even though they are within 4 grams of each other in weight, the Magic Mouse feels MUCH lighter. It is much easier to move on the mouse pad. I am very happy with the responsiveness and with the functionality.

I know that computer mice are a personal preference. I really like everything about the Magic Mouse.

As always, your mileage may vary.

Just got mine a few hours ago. I'm getting my muscle memory trained. The only thing I haven't mastered is the by touch right click. Sort of like patting your head and rubbing your tummy kind of hard.

Everyone at the office thinks it looks great. With my laptop on a stand, and a BT keyboard I finally have a touch input device. I'm not sure how will this will work with my at home three LCD set-up. I'll try it later tonight at home. My guess is that my trackball will remain my input device on my three LCD desktop. But for the laptop on a stand this was worth the price.

Any comments on the tracking speed for regular mouse movement? I have a tiny space I use for a mouse in my HT and set tracking very high. Think: Post-it sized mouse area. Sorry, I mean the tiny post-its, not the 2x2 normal size.

Theoretically, this mouse would be perfect with its gestures and other features. Currently use a gyro mouse that works in the air, as well. But it is dying, and was never great, poor optical system I think.

That is a pretty small tracking area I think you'd be better off with a kennsington trackball. I have this new mouse and it takes less movement to move cursor from one edge of my screen to another than the Mighty Mouse did. But it isn't turbo charged. Just picked mine up after work.... been using it for a couple hours now. All in all I have to say I absolutely love it.

My biggest gripe has to be the lack of middle click though.... seriously Apple lets get on with adding that somehow. I'm already tired of having to use 2 hands to hold cmd down for everything I want to middle click.

For those that are griping about the tracking speed, there are lots of ways to fix that if you just do a google.... or try this out as well... http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12205

So many diehard apple fans on here.

My point is that I've been in agencies that buy Mac Pros constantly. What do the Mac Pros ship with, a consumer mouse! WTF? I agree that they aren't making this for pros. I'd be willing to bet 80% of professional designers out there are opting for a non-apple mouse. They've been replaced by Wacom Tablets and/or a truly functional 3 button mouse. If I buy a "Pro" computer I expect a pro mouse, not some pretty useless Mighty Mouse. I'd honestly rather them not ship it with a mouse at all. I've used Autocad for years, Maya, and many other pro apps that just do NOT work well with any of the Apple mice since the iMac pucks were created.

A Logitech or Intellimouse will beat them any day, and guess what...they aren't marketed to the pros....they are marketed to the average consumer or gamers.

esbowman
Oct 29, 2009, 11:34 PM
Did it get named before or after you found out that scrollball can be used as 3rd button? Or you never found that out?

WOW. Of course we knew it had a third button smarty pants. My point is it's not efficient, and it overall became a paper weight. We seriously used them as backups and kept them in a drawer for when the Logitechs or Intellimouse mice went out. There's no comparison. Go download Maya PLE, hook up your lovely Mighty Mouse or this new overpriced Magic Mouse, and see how fast you navigate. Then hook up a true 3 button mouse and then make an educated comment.

I'm a huge mac fan...but their input devices (other than the iphone) are not up to par. Design over function in the pro environment. I order Mac Pros and I get a consumer mouse...there's something wrong with that.

DMann

By the same token, go into an Apple Store, and actually test one of these out - the build quality is far better than that of the Mighty Mouse, as well as most Logitechs

I've used. Third button functionality can be programmed later, possibly using finger movements in contrary motion, as well as multi-touch zoom and 360º rotation.

It most certainly feels and responds better than most consumer models out there.

Not sure if this is just a witty remark/sarcasm? But no Apple did not force me to turn in my previous mouse. They sold it to me with my new iMac. The point I was trying to make was that the wireless mice Apple now ship with the iMac no longer come with four buttons.

Mine arrived today. At first I thought it was broken but then I realised I was using it upside down. Note to self: Apple Logo goes toward the bottom.
After about 5 mins using it the right way I got used to it. Love it.

I'm used to a middle button for expose but have just set that to a hot corner now. Problem solved. I love the intertia when scrolling in browsers. It's just like an iPhone. It has a great feel to it and a more solid 'click' than the old Mighty/ Apple Mouse. Right clicking seems easier and more pronounced too - though this could be my older apple mouse training me to lift my left finger before I right click. I like it. Very impressed :)

Oh, and the box it comes in is amazing. Very minimal. Not much bigger than the mouse itself. But it has to be some of the hardest to open Apple packaging ever. Unless i'm just stupid :)

Agreed. I was SO EXCITED about this mouse. It looks BEAUTIFUL. But it hurts to use. The laser tracking SUCKS, on the Apple store's very own wood laminate the cursor jumped vertically when I moved the mouse left to right. Actually it went from left to right to top. Sometimes bottom.

And then there's the massive fail of bluetooth mice. It was always a split second behind me so I was always overshooting my mark.

The "magic" part was great though. Scrolling, rotating, worked liked a charm... but no pinch zoom???

Overall pretty bad. I'd like to see a more rounded, wired version with better Laser tracking. :(

It shows up as Apple Wireless Mouse. Did you reboot your computer after pairing the mouse? Mine had the preferences pane for the new mouse, but the right click function did not work until I rebooted, even though it was checked. If you were previously using a wireless Mighty Mouse, deleting its entry from the bluetooth list might also solve the problem.

Got my Magic Mouse today. I fricking LOVE it.

Other then needing to reboot once to get the right click to function, it was painless. Pairing was much faster then the Mighty Mouse.

Right clicking has been 100% reliable. The Mighty Mouse right click reliability stunk.

People reporting sharp edges are holding the mouse incorrectly. I understand what they are referring to. The edges of the top surface are squared off. I grasp the mouse on either side of the aluminum lower body in the middle area and don't notice sharp edges during use.

The touch surface is functional over almost the entire top of the mouse. The only area that does not respond to touch is from the Apple image to the back of the mouse.

I have a 24" iMac and have not noted any tracking speed issues. I have the tracking speed set at about 3/4 of max. When maxed out tracking is way to fast.

I have not noticed any problems with positioning. I used one at an Apple store on light colored wooden tables and on the heavy walnut wood grain colors on my desk with no tracking issues noted. The Magic Mouse is much lighter then the Mighty Mouse and is more accurate on small movements as a result.

The on/off switch on mine is easily accessible and not recessed as one other person reported on theirs.

The iStat Pro widget (v4.9) does not report battery status for the Magic Mouse.

Paging with the two finger gesture takes a little getting used to, but once you figure out an exaggerated movement is not required it works well. In fact, it is easy to cause a back/forward gesture when you don't want to if you unintentionally drag your fingertips across the top of the mouse when you are not using it. The same goes for scrolling.

I miss the two buttons of the Mighty Mouse, but find using hot corners for dashboard and expose just as easy. In any case the touch feature is more then worth the loss of the buttons.

I just got my Magic Mouse and so far it seems to be working great. I had to adjust the tracking a little but now the only thing I see that I really don't like is that the click sound is a lot louder than on my old Logitech mouse.

I do wish I could get it to track faster but overall it's pretty good. I just got the mouse in and I like it alot! It's the cat's meow, the bee's knee's, and all that!

I found I had to adjust tracking speed up to just about the max to get it to work like my old mouse.

This thing is so cool though. I really love the scrolling (both up and down and left and right) and then the two finger to go to previous page.

The old mouse was more comforting, filling the hand. Also, I miss the expose option with the secondary button. Otherwise quite nice. Cool design (ergonomic - not sure yet).

Just received 2 hours ago my 2 magic mice. Both work perfectly on Powermac G5 and Macbook Pro. Don't miss anything about the Mighty Mice. Could care less about middle click or side squeezing. Had them both turned off anyway. Tracking and scrolling work flawlessly. Two finger swipe took all of 5 minutes to get the hang of. Will never look back on any other mice. Love it!

This is the coolest mouse I have ever used, can't wait till the other gestures come to it.

It's a little on the thin side, but overall is fine. Wish it was black (same as the new keyboard should have been).

Black?? Could you imagine the dust and fingerprints. No thank you. As cool as black would look I'm glad they went with the colors they did.

The only thing that ticks me off is the fact that the mouse looks like its got rails underneath.

If it's anodized/brushed alloy black won't be a problem. I agree fingerprints are a problem, but dust? I use mine too much for it to collect dust.

The dust problem would be more for the keyboard.

Wow, you should try it, you'll like it. It's the way all mice should be made. The whole concept of touch, not tons of buttons is the appropriate design. Once again Apple leads the way.

That may be true for Mac users who are used to a one-button mouse, but converters from the PC side may be uncomfortable because the lack of a physical scroll wheel and left/right click buttons does take some getting used to, especially given Windows since Windows 95 take full advantage of the scroll wheel and left-right mouse buttons.

You're right it does take some getting used to. About 6 months ago, I decided to just use the trackpad. Was a PC person (professionally necessary), but finally was able to make money and run a Mac (Intel conversion).

I'm now using just a touchpad and it works tons better than using a mouse. Now that the mouse has touch, I'll give it a try too.

The only way to avoid fingerprints on a touch device is to not use it. Was that a serious post?? Maybe someone will make skins like the iPod/iPhone have, but that will be tricky with the shape.

I played with one at a Store. Very nice, the scrolling is better than any device I've ever used and I can probably survive the tracking speed, even with my unique needs.

The price seems a bit high for me with the current functionality, so I am waiting a bit. Specifically, I'd like to see tap functionality (that would be a good solution for you middle-clickers) and specific control over the acceleration curves for both movement and scrolling.

It finally came in today! Believe it or not, the apple remote arrived before the mouse!

First - check out the mouse carefully! The top surface of the one I received has scratches that are deep enough that they can be felt. It looks like it may have been set upside down on a hard surface and scratched before it was packed??

Second - when unpacking the mouse, do it slowly or the adhesive may stay on the bottom surface.

Third - when moving the mouse around on the desktop, the cursor randomly jumps all over the screen and does not move smoothly at all. My desk surface is opaque and the mighty mouse never had these issues.

I'll take it back to the Apple store tomorrow to see if they will exchange it!

Not sure if this is just a witty remark/sarcasm? But no Apple did not force me to turn in my previous mouse. They sold it to me with my new iMac. The point I was trying to make was that the wireless mice Apple now ship with the iMac no longer come with four buttons.

Maybe you are a fanboy/girl who dares not to say anything negative towards Apple? :) Think different.

So again, you are somehow forced to use this mouse?

My point was if it was black the fingerprints would show up and look terrible. Have you never been able to tell that black shows fingerprints???? I have the new Magic Mouse and use it quite a bit and can't see fingerprints.

Anyone else find Google Maps impossible to control with this thing? Zooming is really frustrating. Sometimes a little swipe does nothing, sometimes it gives you a nice precise zoom, and most of the time it zooms wildly in the direction you swiped (looking at a street in Manhattan, wanting a broader view of a few more blocks, and all of a sudden I'm looking at the northeastern US!)

I found it hard to use in yahoo maps. The slightest brush with the finger caused it to zoom way in or out.

I got the mouse a few minutes ago from the parcel service. I'll return it. The mouse looks nice, has nice features, but erconomic and usability is so worse ... Unbelievable. It's a design piece, not a daily peripheral you'd use for work.

I found that holding my finger on the mouse after the swipe-to-zoom maneuver (so as to prevent it from continuing to scroll with "momentum") makes it manageable, though still worse than using a normal mouse.

Hopefully apple can tweak this a bit with software patch, or maybe even add pinch to zoom!

Got mine last week. I was getting bad wrist pains using the trackpad on my Mbook Pro for logic and after 1 days constant use with the Magic Mouse im very happy both with its performance, ergonomics and feel and no wrist or hand pain! Once the expose feature, pinch zoom and app switch swipe modes are added it will be perfect. Very impressive bit of kit.:o

Just got a new wired mighty mouse in the box on eBay for $6 and a wireless one for $15. I figured I can wait on the magic mouse with these blow out prices, plus I still love the mighty mouse:)

The magic mouse feels good for casual use it seems. I tried one out for a few hours and liked it, but as hard as I seem to be on my mice, $70 is a little high. Figured I would just wait until I update my iMac, but I am tired of cleaning those damn little scroll balls.

I just got one from my local Apple store and already love it.

The kinetic scrolling alone is awesome! It gives your mac a very iPhone-ish experience.

Love it!
