Handbreak help? Stumped when it comes to ripping "tricky" DVD's

For about a year now I have been ripping my DVD's with Handbreak to mp4's so that I can watch them on my :apple:TV and it usually works without a problem.

Every once in a while I come across a DVD that is "stubborn" when Handbreak reads it. My latest battle is with "The Proposal", it seems that they purposely make it tricky to rip. Handbreak scans it and it comes up with 99 chapters all about the same length (1 hr, 45 min) but they are all slightly different lengths.

First I open the DVD with the DVD Player app to see how long the movie actually is and tried to find the one that looked like the times matched up. But once I rip it and play it back, the movie is not in the correct chronological order, the credits roll halfway through the movie etc.

So I tried reading online about other options and I downloaded "RipIt" which works fine. It ripped the movie to a .dvdmedia which plays on my mac but I need the mp4 format to play on the :apple:TV. If I try to throw that .dvdmedia into Handbreak I get a one second long blank mp4?

Any ideas or suggestions? :confused: Dynaflash, you around? ;)

I think you need to find which of those 99 chapters is the actual movie. It's really a trial and error.

I can tell you that I can't use RipIt (no windows) and so I'm stuck with a few of my own that won't rip.

I'm going to think about this more and post back.

Mactheripper to a folder, and then encode the folder with handbrake?

RipIt works good for the stubborn ones. In RipIt, go to RipIt>Preferences>General and uncheck "Use .dvdmedia extension". Now it will rip a normal Video_TS folder just like a dvd. Use that folder to encode in Handbrake.

Play the DVD in "DVD Player" and then right click. From the pop up menu look at the title and there will be a tick mark showing which is playing.

Hope this makes sense.

As previously mentioned, Wall-E and Dark Night were like that, but Handbrake converted fine using title specific mode. The procedure is generally like this:
-Figure out which title you want by playing the DVD and seeing which title is playing
-Launch Handbrake, and when the source selection screen comes up select cancel
-Go to file, open source (title specific), and fill in the title you want.

I have never had this fail, and by selecting the appropriate titles, I was able to strip off the bonus extras on Wall-E into separate mp4s.

Thank you! This was the step I was missing, it worked great after I found out the title number (38 in this case). I knew it was something simple, I just never thought to right click.

From the "ripping issue-title specific" topic in the forums at ripdifferent.com it sounds like you need Title 38 for The Proposal. And I'm betting you are going to have to use the title specific mode in Handbrake to get a proper rip (Cancel-file-open source(title specific)).

The latest version of MTR (4.0) is fantastic at dealing with these disks. And there's always the option in MTR of just ripping that title from the disk. Nice to have options.

Sounds to me like you are missing or have an old version of VLC.

get ripit http://www.ripitapp.com and use that to rip your movies. it is 99% effective but I sometimes have to pull out MTR and use it. I have also learned that Handbrake does not always pick the right title for the movie. To ensure that you are ripping the correct one. open the DVD and play it in your DVD player of your mac. Wait until the actual movie starts and then determine which Title it is. Then in Handbrake, choose that title. I think Handbrake chooses the longest title by default. Pixar movies are the hardest to work with! Hope this helps.

A couple of others have the DVD name/mounted volume with < > outside the name. Those I have not been able to work with either. Two examples are 3:10 to Yuma and Gamer. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

I use makemkv to rip the dvd/bluray to an mkv file http://www.makemkv.com/download/ (Makemkv is really quick) then use handbrake to convert the file. I had a similar issue yesterday with lakeview terrace.

It's been a while but I recall having problems ripping Transformers RotF using RipIt--was able to rip/encode directly using Handbrake/VLC. Just make sure you use the correct title--as others here have mentioned, play the DVD, see what title is playing after starting the actual movie and then use the Open Source (title specific) option under File in Handbrake, highlight the VIDEO_TS folder and input the specific title number.

I have 3:10 to Yuma in my library and don't recall having any problems ripping it with RipIt and then encoding with Handbrake.

I found the title but can't see where to enter it for ripping. USing latest Handbrake, OS. File, open source (title specific) looks the same as I normally see when the regular queue comes up...

Once you pick the open source (title specific) dialog, which looks the same until after you click on the disc in the open dialog, you will then type in the title you found in DVD player (which you can also get by clocking on where it says 'title' and the DVD control bar, and then clicking on the LCD looking number display until it says XX/YY - like 38/99). Then it will load, and look the same as when you normally would see in Handbrake, other than if you do the title selection drop own, there will just be one option there.

Here is how I do it and it always seems to work:

Play the movie through DVD Player. While the movie is playing look under the "Go" menu and under the "Title" Submenu. It will show you which title the movie actually is.

Then in handbrake when it asks you to open a volume, hit cancel. Then under the "file" menu there is an option to open a specific title. Select that option. Then you select the volume you want to open and are given the opportunity to select the specific title. You enter the title that you determined in DVD Player.

Handbrake then just opens that specific title. It is much faster and gives you the right title to get a good rip of the movie.

I know this is hideous old but I just tried to do this with "The Proposal" on 0.9.4 and it would not work with Title 38 (though it does select the proper title and doesn't give me a huge list of the fake ones). Even using the CLI with -t 38 just output a blank empty file. I had to turn off the new DVD reading library and use the old one (libdvdnav?). Just FYI.

I have ripped disc one of the Rock and Roll hall of fame Concert BD using Make MKV. I get two titles but when I try to open them with Handbrake I get "not a legitimate source" or some such error ... VLC will play the audio but not the video from the ripped MKV. Anyone else having a similar problem?
