I have a 17' Macbook pro with express card. Can I Get the vidock 2 then connect the dvi to the dvi to mini display port then to the 24" apple led display

No. The display port input requires display port signalling/protocol. The non-powered converter cables are directional: they go from display port to dvi but not the other way. You need a ~$150 powered protocol convertor box.
