Very few details so far.

(CNN) -- (CNN) -- Seven people were killed and at least 12 others wounded in shootings at Fort Hood, Texas, on Thursday, according to a senior Pentagon official.

One person is in custody in connection with the incident, CNN affiliate KXXV reported.

One attacker has been "neutralized" and one has been "cornered," Lt. Gen Russel Honore, former deputy commander at Fort Hood, told CNN.

At least seven people are dead and 12 wounded in a shooting at Fort Hood in Texas, the base's public affairs office told NBC News on Thursday.

The official would not give his name nor additional details. It was unknown whether victims are soldiers or civilians. One gunman was reportedly in custody and another was on the loose, NBC News said. A third shooter may be involved, according to NBC News affiliate KCEN, which said the person had opened fire on the SWAT team at the base.

KCEN in Waco reported that the second suspect may be holed up in a building on the post. A congressman told MSNBC that a graduation ceremony may have been taking place at the time of the shooting.

The situation at Ford Hood is obviously extremely sketchy. But I wanted to flag a late report from MSNBC's Pete Williams suggesting that initial reports from within the Pentagon say the incident appears to be "all military," i.e., the victims are military but apparently the assailants are too.

I want to be very clear. There is nothing confirmed about this. This a reporter getting initial and unofficial reports from within the Pentagon. But authorities on the base do have one shooter in custody. So presumably military officials know who that person is and are drawing inferences based on that.

Gunman identified as Maj. Malik Nadal Hasan.

Comments from Obama:
CNN said:
Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama on Thursday called the Fort Hood, Texas, shootings "tragic" and "a horrific outburst of violence."

He expressed his condolences for the shooting victims.

"These are men and women who have made the selfless and courageous decision to risk and at times give their lives to protect the rest of us on a daily basis," he said.

"It's difficult enough when we lose these brave Americans in battles overseas. It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an Army base on American soil."

Government authorities are working to ensure that Fort Hood is secure, he said. The president asked for all Americans to keep the soldiers from the base "in their prayers."

There is no greater honor or responsibility as president than making sure U.S. soldiers are properly cared for, he added.

"We will make sure that we get answers to every single question about this horrible incident," he pledged.

Twelve people died in the shooting - including a gunman - and about 30 were wounded, a Fort Hood spokesman told CNN.

Good Grief. I know I'm gonna sound all freaky but does the U.S. Military have sleeper cells in the armed forces?

A MAJOR ? That's an O-4.. Common for an XO. Executive Officer.

This guy had to have been in at least 10 years and graduated from the Army War College.

Why is that your first assumption?

That depends. From what I understand, he was a "mental health specialist/professional." There are specialties where your civilian specialty and background merit an automatic grade. For example, if this guy were a psychiatrist, he would have started at O-3. Furthermore, he would never have been in the pipeline for Army War College.

Sad news. These are men/women who signed up to serve their country. I don't believe in the wars but these people did not deserve to die. Some of the injured had just graduated and instead of facing a foreign threat they were gunned down by one of their own. He should have just taken his own life.

That's terrible. How ironic it is that the person who flipped out and did the shootings was a psychiatrist.

From what I've heard from psychiatrists, being around crazy people all day can start to get to you... it sounds like the guy snapped when he found out he was being deployed.

Update.

11 dead, 31 wounded. One person was reported to be dead, but is alive. Wounded, went through surgery, and now is in stable condition.

Gunman was reported to be dead. He's alive. The one thought to be dead but was just wounded was the first person to shoot him.

I agree. It makes you wonder about the psychiatrist's lot, being around these people with mental health problems might have lead to his reluctance about being redeployed if he knew what it does to you.

Either way it's terribly sad that someone who was trained in and spent his life dealing with other's mental health issues could not recognise that he himself was about to flip out and do what he did :(

Fort Hood: Another victim of shooting rampage dies

FORT HOOD, Texas – A military official says one more person has died after being injured during a shooting rampage at Fort Hood in Texas.

Post spokesman Tyler Broadway said early Friday that the toll now stands at 13 dead and 30 wounded. Late Thursday, officials said 12 people had been killed and 31 wounded in the afternoon attack.

The victims' identities haven't been released.

The suspected shooter, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, was on a ventilator and unconscious in a hospital late Thursday. The Army psychiatrist was shot four times after the rampage began around 1:30 p.m.

The motive for the shootings isn't clear, but Hasan was apparently set to deploy soon. He also had expressed some anger about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Yeah, you do. The authorities are saying no, at this point. So far, it sounds like there's nothing to that. Interview with a relative I heard seemed normal, not propaganda. Alleged shooter was being treated for alcohol problem.

Just saw on google news that I have the same type of gun he used (FN FiveSeveN). Not a big caliber, but it makes up for it in low recoil, fast followup and ultra flat shooting capabilities. Sad to see just how effective the FiveSeveN can be in the right hands.

When I was doing my psychology internship last year, a previous psychiatry resident killed herself. One way or another -- psychiatric diseases are real diseases and they can affect anyone -- there's never been any evidence that people who work in psychiatry, psychology, or social work are particularly immune to them.

I listened to a lot of the NPR coverage on the way home... sounds like this was a fed up person who wasn't safe to remain in active duty. Hopefully from the ashes of this we can find better ways to identify people like this, and get them out of the pathway where they can harm others in time to prevent these things. A lot of heroes did a lot of good work in managing that situation, and there could've been a lot more dead. Hopefully we can learn from their heroic efforts also and make our bases safer.

mkrishnan, you're absolutely right, there is NO evidence that people who work in psychiatry, psychology, or social work are particularly immune to them. In fact, several studies suggest that physicians in general may be at higher risk of depression and suicide than the general population. I don't think there have been any studies that have identified psychiatrists as being at particularly increased risk compared to other physicians.
