Fortune reports (http://brainstormtech.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2009/11/06/apple-is-coming-to-broadway/) that Apple has issued media invitations for a preview of the company's fourth Manhattan store (http://www.apple.com/retail/upperwestside/") scheduled to officially open in New York City's Upper West Side at Broadway and 67th Street on Saturday, November 14th.The store, located on the Upper West Side at Broadway and 67th Street, is well-positioned to get attention from the crowds and the TV cameras that will line the avenue for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade less than two weeks later.ifoAppleStore previewed (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/db/2009/11/02/nyc-store-ready%e2%80%94and-amazing-architecture/) the new store earlier this month, showing off the "curtain" barrier currently shielding the store from public view and a high-level view of the store's unique glass roof and curving façade.

The Upper West Side store opening is part of a rush of several such high-profile openings as the company prepares for the holiday shopping season. Apple's first French retail store opens in Paris (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/11/05/apple-set-to-open-first-retail-store-in-france/) tomorrow, with a second French store set to open in Montpellier the following weekend.

Between the price of the real estate and the architectural design and building costs, that store must cost a fortune!

Quite the bold move for a company to be that extravagant in the current economical climate.

I would argue this is the best time for Apple to expand its stores given lower material costs, labour costs, and land values. A good time to be greedy.

Those are the metal clamps that hold the sheets of glass together. Notice how they are arranged in a grid-like fashion.

That would be great.

Seems a bit like overkill to have two stores 12 blocks apart.

+1. Great observation.

Quite the bold move for a company to be that extravagant in the current economical climate.

Sorry, but -1. Apple has posted continuously increasing profits in the current climate by marketing product superiority. Additionally, Apple has more cash on their balance sheet than they even know know what to do with, why not spend it on real estate while it's cheap? You can never go wrong with buying non-depreciating capital while it's cheap, the long run benefits will always pay off, no matter who you are.

C'Mon Apple, Open a store in Idaho already!

All we have are lame "Pretend" Apple stores that have zero customer service or knowledge on any of Apples Products.

Awesome to see these gorgeous stores opening but it would be nice to see more of them opening where they have no representation.

Maybe someday!

The manhattan markets are underserved, even with SoHo, 14th Street and the craziest store of them all, Fifth Avenue.

There's just too much traffic at each store. if you look at all four locations on a map now, you can draw a line between each dot and the shape will slightly resemble Manhattan's own.

They did a pretty amazing job with the location search and selection. Gotta hand it to apple's real estate team.

I don't think the NYCity stores ever close and they are always active. I do feel sorry for the states/cities that have no representation but they put the stores in places where they can pay for themselves. In Georgia, I have two Apple stores to go to, one near work (North Point Mall, Alparetta) and one near my home (Mall of Georgia, Buford) and they are consistantly more busy than any of the other stores in the Malls when I visit them.

When I went to visit the Manhatten store, while visiting family, it was a madhouse. :D

the site is there. U had extra characters on the end.

As for brooklyn, having lived there, I think that an apple store would only encourage the hipsters to stay, instead of moving back to their parents basements. Anyway, have u noticed how close starbucks are in NYC? It's not a matter of blocks, it's a matter of population density and the $$$ that comes with it. A couple of highrises on 2 blocks on the UWS has more people than all of Williamsburg I'm sure, so it's wiser to go where their efforts can be the most fruitful.

They are really pushing these stores pretty hardcore style aint they? 1 in NYC, 1 in Paris, another in montpellier maybe.. theres 2 BIIIIGG ones in london (west-side).. i dont tend to venture east, but i imagine theres plans for that as well.. hmmm. Wouldnt be surprised at all really if they posted more Y-O-Y profits this quarter when it finishes :-)

I heard about this one a while ago but the red curtain is just over the top!

While not many talked about it due to the media types concentration in NYC but that town has been hit very hard by real estate issues. Some of the highest end building and condos are asking for a fifth of the rent just three years ago.

I'm sure Apple signed a nice long lease on the building and would not be surprised of the didn't pay a cent for the building for the first year. Also, with so much construction out of work, they could pick an choose from NYC's best skilled works to do that place right. Love to have been a fly on the wall with Apple management and the local unions getting this place together.

Overall, looks great. Just in time for the Thanksgiving day and Chirstmas parade. Good job!

I agree. Plus, recessions/depressions can be seen a good time to invest in stuff like this so that when the economy gets better (if it does), Apple will be ready. Companies who don't do this will then have to play catch up.

Well I know it's not the best foot-traffic area, but somewhere near Atlantic Center would be a great place for one. BAM is there, as is Pratt and LIU, and all the trains and the LIRR converge there. Other than that I could see one in Billyburg or Dumbo.

I would say Park Slope out of selfishness, but I can't see it happening. Doesn't fit the neighborhood.

I know where it is but I'm just saying it would have been nice to see some kind of promotional effort like special tees or some advertising blitz.

As for other complaining about another Manhattan spot, the 5th Ave. store is wildly busy. They needed another store to take the burden off. They keep building stores in the city because those stores make more per square foot than any store in the country. It helps open up other Apple stores in other areas that people want that do not make nearly as much money.

It would be nice to see a store in Brooklyn though.

You're right, it is pretty unevenly spread out. But look at all the factors: population & wealth distribution, local/state/national laws, etc. You wouldn't want to put an equal amount of stores in every state because North Dakota has quite a bit fewer people than California, say. Plus, add in all the legal hurdles you have to put in just to put in a store. I'm no expert in the law, especially of countries outside the US, so I don't know what Apple has to do to open a store in Germany or something.

As someone who lives on the upper west side, and works next door to the huge apple store on the east side - those "12 blocks apart" are really "big blocks." They are nearly completely on opposite sides of the city. I also feel like they are going to have very different constituencies. There are a lot more tourists who shop over here (where there are all the fancy designer stores, etc.) while the west side store will be used more by the local population who need to go visit the genius bar.

I don't see what's so exciting either. Unless you are nearby and going to use it the store will be just like any other store. Black and glass outside, maple wood and Genius bar inside.

The only interesting thing about this one is the curtain which is a great advertising device. Architecturally when they take it off it will as exciting as a building that looks like a typical Apple Store.

And really, once you've seen an Apple Store in person there is no need to go in again. Mac software and accessories are all cheaper on line.

Dont' be dissing my city of Kansas City. And for the correction, in the Kansas City Metropolitan area we have TWO stores. Since the metro area spans both sides of the Missouri/Kansas border, I count the one in Leawood Kansas as well as the one on the Plaza in Kansas City, MO.

Sort of. I think that a store's layout is part of the experience. The store near my uni and back home are both mall based rectangles. The one in Miami (aventura mall) is 4 times the size and circle like with tons more accessories and software testing areas. I really want to visit a two story store.

Brooklyn and Queens will never get a stand alone Apple Store. I am quite surprised they haven't opened in Queens Center mall yet, it's the highest dollars per square foot sales mall in the country. Kings Plaza is also a candidate for an Apple Store.

The one in Ginza (Tokyo) is either 4 or 5 floors--can't remember--and two elevators. Very cool. One of the floors is a theatre where they showed training presentations, etc. I was there a couple years ago and was quite impressed at how many people you could cram into that much Apple Store.

Good, now I can go check if they will fix the crack on my macbook without having to go all the way downtown. As a 1st time mac owner, I'm very disappointed in the build quality. The battery sticks out, and presses against the track pad, so much pressure that if you just grace any area around the track pad, it registers a click. It makes it impossible for me to type. Very disappointed and I refuse to spend so much money on another computer, especially when I thought it was going to be superior build quality.

Not great. There's been a trickle-down effect from the financial industry failures that's sort of snowballed. Of course, being New York, there's always *someone* hiring, but competition is ridiculously fierce.

On the plus side, rents have dropped significantly in some parts of Manhattan, and landlords in other areas are more open to negotiation and are offering sweeter deals than in the past.

Agree - NYC avenues are very, very long. More like 3 "average" blocks each. (Streets OTOH are relatively normal).

You pretty much do need both east and west sides.

Oh btw - in addition to Brooklyn I'd like to remind Apple about Center City Philly which STILL has no single store. :( I'm surprised Washington DC proper doesn't seem to have one either?

Bay Ridge! ;)

Um, more realistically I wouldn't mind Park Slope. There's also the Atlantic Terminal mall with Target, it's not the most upscale but nice enough with TONS of subway access and saves 20 min on the R train going to SoHo....

R Train = ♥
Hahaha

Seriously though, even though the R can get slow at times, it's always there and it goes almost everywhere.

Only store in Scotland is in Glascow. :-(
Theres a beautiful vacant site on Princess Street in Edinburgh that would be perfect for Apple.

It's Glasgow.

And a store opened up in Aberdeen just a few weeks back. However, I think the next store in Scotland (whenever that may be) will be in Edinburgh.

Atlanta needs one of these flagship stores. The Lenox Mall store is just not big enough. They could put one in Atlantic Station or on Peachtree in Midtown. Atlantic Station is prob better because of the parking.

lol You got that right. Remember 1997 (?) or whenever it was when GAP stores were aaaall the rage? ;) Face it-- you get old and people move on. Not even the mighty Apple is invincible.
