Ok folks. The time has come. After years being a desktop PC user, I have finally decided to make the switch: from a desktop to a laptop and from a PC to an Apple.

Please muffle the various gasps of horror and/or amusement that you might be exuding.

The reasons for the are various and many but suffice it to say I have lately found myself enamored with a certain little iBook, which shall remain, um, nameless.

In the meantime, I am putting my beloved PC on the block for sale or trade to the most worthy home. Let's take a look at what she's packing:

http://www.brianragle.us/images/computer2.jpg

Within that sleek, brushed aluminum case you will find the following:

Dual Pentium 3 processors, each running at 1 gigahertz on an Asus motherboard 512 megabytes of RAM Approximately 110 gigabytes of hard drive space DVD+R/W drive (which I am using at this very moment, as I type this, to rip and copy a DVD) Dual NVidia (http://www.nvidia.com/page/nf2_home.html) graphics cards, each having 64 megabytes of video RAM, with TV/DVI outs
Linksys (http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=33&scid=36&prid=196) 802.11b wireless PCI card USB 2.0 PCI card, sporting 2 ports 2 additional rear USB ports, and 2 more in the front Ethernet PCI card Soundblaster PCI sound card 3 case fans, with the side one accented by built-in blue LED's Blue neon tube, customizable to pulse to sound Transparent side, all the better to see the rounded drive cables But is that all? Nope.

The computer comes with the following:

17" monitor 15" monitor, both being able to be used on the computer at once creating a massive desktop HP multifunction (http://www.shopping.hp.com/cgi-bin/hpdirect/shopping/scripts/home/store_access.jsp?product_code=Q1662A%23ABA&aoid=20715&template_type=product_detail&script_name=product.cgi) printer/scanner/copier Microsoft Wireless Desktop (http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/productdetails.aspx?pid=015), including optical mouse and multimedia keyboard Logitech 2.1 sound system, featuring 2 desktop satellite speakers and 1 floor sub-woofer D-Link webcam (http://support.dlink.com/products/view.asp?productid=DSB%2DC310)
USB Graphics Tablet, compatible with Photoshop and all major graphics programs
More software than you will know what to do with, including the latest versions of Windows, Office, Adobe CS, and many more (did someone say Maya?)
Now, here are my terms:

Everything you see above is available for sale at $1000, firm. Or...

I am willing to consider a trade of the entire package you see above for an Apple iBook or PowerBook laptop of acceptable power and configuration. Email me your specs and we will hash it out. For the right deal, I may have an accessory or two to sweeten the deal. (Here's a hint: Sony made it and it originally cost in the neighborhood of $500.)

Interested parties can send email here (bragle@gmail.com).

More software than I can shake a stick at? Question: Is it more legal software than I can shake a stick at? I somehow doubt it but I'm willing to let you say it is if it indeed is.

How about you drop the hint on the Sony item and just say what it is. Sony sells a ton of stuff. Is it a TV? Is it a DVD-Recorder, a 200 disc changer, a mini-disc thing? A surround sound setup? I mean... c'mon. If you want to deal then put the cards out on the table where we can see them...

Oh. And good luck. ;)

I just have to say it, ragle: you at least market the stuff well. "both being able to be used on the computer at once creating a massive desktop"... hee hee! Best of luck!

Some is and some isn't. And that's all I got to say about that. In public, at least.

The Sony item is only to sweeten the pot if somone makes me an offer of trade that is slightly better than what I am offering in return. It could, conceivably, tip the balance more evenly.

And that is all I got to say about that! ;)

So a bunch of illegal software and (possibly) an unknown device. I'll pass... but good luck.

Hey, I understand. Some people can deal with it and some people can't. Thanks for the good wishes anyway!

Please muffle the various gasps of horror and/or amusement that you might be exuding. It would be more worthy of both, were you not the second person to have such a proposition featured on the homepage forum links. Those iBooks must exert quite a pull, 'cause that's a pretty nice system you've got there!

If the trade isn't successful here, you might want to split things up and sell separately on eBay....might make more cash that way. And you might check to see if that multifunction printer will work under OS X before you sell it, too.

Good luck! ....if my Macs didn't exert an equally strong pull on me (or if I had a system worth trading) I'd be tempted. :)

Hey,
Have you tried to sell the system in a tech forum like anandtech or techimo.com? I'm a frequent member there, and I was able to sell tons of PC systems for a very good price there and buy myself this new powerbook 15" :)
good luck, Paul

P.S. If you sell in those PC fourms, you'll be bashed for the illiegal software there, make everything legal, if possible :) thanks

Thanks for the tip! I am checking it out, even now.

While I know the illegal software stuff is a bit of a hurdle to most folks, there really isn't all that much of it and what there is probably wouldn't interest anyone not into professional-level video, 3D, and photo-editing.

For example, the majority of the games I own are all legit. At any rate, I will tread cautiously until I see what I am up against. Software is a minor thing compared to the total hardware package I am offering.

Another poster suggested I check for compatibility between the printer and OS X, but I won't have need of the printer while I am travelling, which I plan to do later this year.

*BUMP*

Ok, here goes. It's time to sweeten the deal a bit. The above mentioned ad mentions a certain Sony item which could be added to the overall system. Well, consider it officially added.

The item in question is a Sony Clie NX-70 PDA. Nearly a computer in itself, this unit features the following:

Palm OS 5.0
200 mhz ARM-compliant processor
16 Megs of internal memory, along with additional 128 Meg Memory Stick
Internal Li-Ion rechargeable battery
Compact Flash slot to house optional memory cards or accessories, such as WiFi
Enhanced infrared port for increased beaming distance
Targus Compact Flash 56k Modem
QWERTY keyboard when used in clamshell mode
Swiveling screen to use as a normal PDA with stylus
Bright Transflective TFT color display with backlight
Built-in speaker/headphone jack
Built-in digital still/video camera
Brushed magnesium case (matches computer from above!)
Native software includes Picture Viewer/Editor, Voice Recorder, MP3 Player, Alarm Clock, Movie Player, Flash Player, Remote Control, all in addition to the usual fare of Palm applications. Additionally, there are numerous free applications and e-books included on disc.
Sony soft carrying case

I have used this unit extensively for organization, MP3 player, and for watching movies on the go. The unit has no cosmetic defects of any kind and the screen is in perfect condition.

Interested parties should PM or email me at bragle@gmail.com with the details of your offer. Again, I am looking to sell the entire set-up for $1000 (USD), but would really prefer to trade for a comparably equipped iBook or PowerBook. This minimizes the time I am without a computer in front of me.

Ill trade you straight up a Powermac G4 Digital Audio for your Tower... you can keep the monitors, webcam, speakers and PDA

Does it have a firewire port?

Yes, it has one front Firewire port.

The only problem is that I am trying to minimize my computer equipment down to a laptop since I will be travelling abroad soon. A laptop is pretty much the only way I can go at this point, though your offer is very generous. Another time and place in my plans, I would have taken you up on it right away. Thanks for the interest anyway!

Out of curiosity, could you PM or email me the specs to the G4? I am unfamiliar with Mac hardware and I would be interested in seeing how it compares to mine. Also, how much would you sell it for and would Microsoft's wireless keyboard and mouse work on such a system, not to mention what type of monitor would it use?
