on-the-go playlist and batteries?

my ipod should be arriving later this week (it's a 15GB 3G) and i know that using the shuffle feature drains battery life quickly... but, if i select the songs i want in advance with an OTG playlist, does it use as much battery life?
it would be nice if it didn't, because that's what i usually do in itunes (with party shuffle) and it works well for me...
