probably just a glitch, but can anyone verify that it comes through as a free song, and doesn't charge you .99˘ to download?

The iTMS front page says it's the Phoenix song...

Last week, I downloaded what I thought was the free single (something by Rachael Yamagata) and ended up getting charged. I figured that I just wasn't paying attention, clicking on a "featured song" link rather than the one for the free song.
Now, I wonder whether the same glitch happened last week, and the link for the free song on the front page of the store took me to a paid download (and I didn't notice it the button said "Buy Song").

well I'd get a screen shot, but I'm sure yours says the same as mine: on the front of the US iTMS, the Free Download: Single of the Week block shows Phoenix and links directly to this album (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=7318476) showing this song (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=19034932&selectedItemId=19034871) as the single of the week (even in the header on the page). But then it says "buy song" and lists it at .99˘.
If it's the classical song, fine - but then the front page at iTMS should reflect that - a lot of people won't pay attention to this and get charged.

I just tried for the second time to download, Everything Is Everything 3:01 Phoenix Alphabetical.
It says that the item is being modified. Please try later.

There are TWO free songs each week--one is the Discovery Download (browse the Genres to find the banner to that one--Classical this week). So the Phoenix song IS the main freebie this week.
I noticed this glitch too--and interestingly, even though the song says .99, when you add it to your cart it says the usual "download soon, free for a limited time" thing :) But since it still showed as .99 in my cart, I decided to wait until they fixed it.
Now I see it has magically transformed to free in my cart, so... download away! Problem fixed.
I also threw in that 9.99 Moby Play B-Sides album... not an easy disc to find as a CD, and if you do find it, it's an expensive set with Play, which I already have. So I'd never get the B-Sides disc without iTunes unless it turned up used.
(The Yamagata song was free another week... not this week, not last week.)

Something to note..having tried to purchase the song using one click, each attempt having failed with the "song being modified" error, it worked fine when using the shopping basket method of purchasing.

I had the same problem, but it seems to be fixed now.

Yes, I don't think Apple ever announced it but it's true... there's even a special Discover Download banner on the store each week. It's always the middle banner on top... but the genre changes weekly. They want to make you browse the genres and explore.
That's 104 free songs per year.

Free Phoenix song! Sweet! I loved "Too Young" on the Lost In Translation soundtrack, so free Phoenix music is a quality deal as far as I'm concerned. Only problem will be if it's fantastic enough to make me want the whole album.
...Damnit, it is. MUST RESIST!

Yes but I download around 1 AM on Tuesday... I might beat them to it :) ha ha ... maybe you guys can work together and update the iMix! or start your own iMix that's a few hours ahead of that one! i usually find myself forgetting about it until the monday (day before the new release), so i'll download it then! i need an 'FREE iTunes music reminder' email or notice/script! [edit: actually, apple sends out an email on tuesdays ... i just need another email to remind me to download it before it's too late]

There seem to be a lot of glitches on iTunes as it expands - albums appearing with no songs, duplicate songs on the same album, and typos. Perhaps this is just another?

I don't know if this happens on the US store but in the Rock section of the UK store if you click on Sigur Rós under the featured artist list no songs appear. Searching Sigur Rós in the search tool also returns no results.
A featured artist with no songs

Yeah, it appears that the free single of the week glitch has been taken care of. I've also experienced the problem where you click a link to an album, but there are no tracks for sale. I don't remember the artist, but I was on their artist page and clicked the link to the "Exclusive" material, and there were no songs. I guess the songs are so exclusive even iTunes doesn't have them :). I actually sent an email to iTMS customer care about it, and they still haven't gotten back to me. (I sent the email last week.)
