Did I ruin my hacked iPhone?

I've been using an old iPhone 2g that my friend unlocked for me and recently upgraded to 3.1.2 through iTunes. Now, I can't figure out how to unlock the phone. I can't even start using it because it's not activated, so I don't know what firmware it's at. Can anyone tell me if this is unlockable or how?
