I have an eight year old Apple mouse which I'm running on a Mini with SL. A simple question, is it worth spending the money on a new Magic Mouse? I would like to hear good (and bad if there are any) stories about this recently released accessory based on your experiences.

You can use *any* USB mouse on the planet, why not try a few others?

Well, I haven't had too much time to play around with it, since I haven't gotten my new iMac yet, but I played around with it at the apple store and it was actually pretty cool.
Well, if you're asking me if it's worth spending the money.. I'd have to say it depends on what kind of person you are.
If you're looking for many buttons on it, obviously you won't find much in there.
however, the gestures are pretty cool, and it is the first mouse to ever do that.
And I've been thinking lately, that maybe apple will release updates for it to let people do more gestures. But who knows.
I can't really tell you much.. since it's a mouse. And that's something you need to pick out yourself. But, as far as good and bad goes, I haven't really heard any bad news about it. But then again.. it is a mouse.

i got the magic mouse from a mate , if i had smaller hands i would have kept it too ,but it simply is to flat , nice design but i would say its highly overpriced if bought without new iMac , anyway no fan of wireless stuff ..annoying things which are always empty when you need them
i wonder if there would not be a possibility to fit a inductive charger into the foot /stand of the iMac , so you could recharge just by placing your keyboard or mouse best both on the foot when not used and recharge them without fuss or contacts
simple things like electric toothbrushes use this technic since years now
so why not mouses

I really like the new magic mouse. i have had no problems with it what so ever. I've been using 8 hours a day for about two weeks, and haven't had wrist ache etc. However i do have pretty small hands lol
Plus it looks amazing too!

Mine is great. Always used Apple mice and this is easily the best so far. People complain that its too 'flat' and I can understand where they are coming from but it allows you to rest your entire hand on it instead of grasping it with fingers which help minimise the strain on your fingers.
The swipe features are great and will only improve when/if new actions/buttons are released with updates.
I'm very pleased with it but I do agree its a bit expensive but not necessarily overpriced.

Ive gone to the Apple store 5 times in the last month to play on the new iMacs while I wait for my i7 to arrive. The Magic Mouse is very nice. Although, they have it pretty warm in the store and I noticed if my hands get a little moist, the gestures on the mouse are very difficult to perform, especially 2 fingers forward or back. Im sure its a matter of getting used to it.
With that said, I still want to buy one for my MBP. It tracks very well and the scrolling and left/right mouse clicks are very nice. It feels good in the hand as well.

Love mine in every way for general computer use.
Don't expect it to be like a high end logitech though, the ergonomics are not great as you don't really hold the mouse like you would a moulded gaming mouse, I find I sort of 'clamp' mine with my fingers.
Touch scrolling both horizontally and vertically is fantastic, I picked it up in no time.

It's cool. Not worth upgrading to though. A mouse is still just a mouse. The only gestures that it really has is back and forward in your browser... My logitech G5 has that.
I also have a bluetooth Mighty Mouse and I wouldn't buy a new mouse if it didn't come with my iMac.

I have been using one since it came out with the 27" iMac I bought when they were released. I have two issues with it.
No middle mouse button. I use a cad application where I have been using the press and hold of the middle button for years to rotate my models on the screen. Because the MM doesn't have a middle button, I have to use a regular mouse while using that cad program.
Low form factor. Unless you have hands the size of a 10 year old, your hands are going to be too big for the mouse. It means that the palm of your hand ends up resting on the table which is a bit awkward from a normal mouse.
You may also need to use a third party mouse application to get the tracking speed you are used to. On the iMac, even at max setting there was no way to move from one side of the screen to the other without physically picking up the mouse because you had run out of wrist movement.
If you buy one you have 14 days to take it back, so why not try it, and if you don't like it you can return it for a more reasonably priced and more useable mouse.

I love it! I've been using it since I got my 21.5" iMac. The other day I had to go back and use the Mighty Mouse and it felt a bit odd and clunky.
The Magic Mouse is nice because its not hard on your hand and wrist. You also don't have to worry about cleaning anything.

I love mine. However, I do miss having an extra physical button or two. I'm coming from a wireless Mighty Mouse and knowing that I won't have to ever worry about cleaning that little ball anymore is worth the price of admission.

I love my Magic Mouse, but I have only one complaint about it. It's heavy, relative to a wired mouse. Keep this in mind - for me, moving the mouse around quickly isn't easy to do.

That and the sensitivity is crazy low!!! Even when turned all the way up. Makes these big screens a burden. :p

It's good. I like it. But....
Gestures? There are none other than being able to go backwards and forwards on web pages, and folders. etc. Not currently being able to invoke expose or spaces from it is a bummer, but not a big one. I do like not having to clean the Mighty Mouse's ball (sounds weird when I put it like that :) ).
I hope that three fingered gestures are added at some point.

You can get a bluetooth mouse with forward and back for 25 bucks. They did nothing to take real advantage of multi-touch yet. When Pinch, 3 Finger gestures, Trackpad Mode or anything like that are enabled, I'd say it could be worth the pricetag. Right now... It's only a mouse with forward and back capability... Been around for a very long time and are found much cheaper.
Hmm, I never noticed this since I use hot corners.
Hot corners FTW here. The squeeze gesture with the original mighty mouse was a bit cumbersome.

Everyone who misses middle click:
http://blog.boastr.net/
The mouse has as much multi-touch as your trackpad.
This enables a 3 finger tap to do middle click which was sorely missed for the last 2 weeks.

The new beta of BetterTouchTool (http://blog.boastr.net ) is also capable of two finger swipe up and down for magic mouse!!!!
(Unfortunately you have to disable momentum in your magic mouse prefs at the moment, but this will be fixed soon)

Now when is Apple going to release this? Seriously...
It took them a while to enable the 2 finger click on the first gen MBP's as well. I had a hacked driver for a while that did it but then Apple eventually added the support on their own.

I absolutely hated the "mighty mouse" with a passion. With each Mac I purchased I never, ever, opened the mighty mouse; I moved right on to something better.
With my 27" iMac I decided to give the magic mouse a shot. Despite its low profile, I love the mouse. The scrolling is excellent. The two-finger swiping is surprisingly easy and effective. Tap-to-click would be the only additional feature I would bring to the mouse if it was up to me.
It's taken me some time to get used to holding a mouse differently (with my fingers rather than my entire hand), but other than that, the magic mouse is an excellent experience.

I hated the Mighty Mouse as well. The ball always got dirty and then it wouldn't scroll anymore.
I really love the Magic Mouse but I do not like how low it sits.

The sensitivity is my problem right now. It moves too slowly for me and I have the tracking speed maxed out.

I tried the Magic Mouse a couple of times in the store before buying one to use at work alongside my MBP. I'm quite picky about mice and have been using a SteelSeries Ikari Laser both at home and at work but find that I never use the side buttons, except accidentally.
What sold me on the Magic Mouse was kinetic scrolling, I can't imagine how I lived without it. It's also so sleek that it slips discretely into an elastic pocket in my laptop bag. And, finally, it gets a lot of attention at work.
Ikari Lasers seem to be about Ģ50 a pop, which makes the Ģ55 for such a stunning wireless mouse from Apple seem entirely justified. That said, the pretty good Microsoft Notebook Mouse 5000 can be had for under Ģ20.
The one thing that irks me at the moment is that the right click area is a little bit small, and I often find myself struggling to right click but the time I save zipping through reams of code with kintetic scrolling more than makes up for that.
It also works with my Netbook hackintosh, which is nice because the touchpad on the Samsung NC10 is a disaster.

I thought for sure I was going to love this thing. I went to best buy and tried it out and I HATED it. I think, however, that it was a "problem model" or the laser was just screwing up on the material of the table. It was so jumpy. I did not like it. In fact, now that I think about it, it had to have been a faulty model (or something) because nocody would like this mouse from the experience that I got.

Actually, if it were taller it would be more awkward to swipe with your finger given that your palm is usually resting on the same plane as the mouse.
The magic mouse shouldn't be compared with a conventional mouse. It's really a half-mouse, half-trackpad device, and no one ever wishes that their trackpad was "a bit taller" for obvious reasons.

Once you enable a second click function it works just fine. Scroll with momentum is quick and the other hand gestures are pretty cool.

I really wasn't thrilled with the magic mouse in the Apple Store... not sure if I just needed to be more comfortable or if it was dirty... BUT when I received my new iMac I think that besides the amazing speed of the processor, I was most impressed with how well the mouse operated. I am also obsessed with modern interiors and furniture, so the look of the mouse leaves me very happy.
I think apple really got this last update of products perfect.

You really need to try the mouse yourself since everyone has different opinions. Best to go down to an Apple reseller shop and try one out, you could also go to a PC store and try out some other USB mice.

The Magic Mouse is slightly heavier than the normal wired Apple Mouse, but it's also a lot lighter than the old wireless Apple Mouse ... it's surprising how much difference one less battery makes.

Ive been using it for 4 days now anbd I absolutely love it. It feels natural under my hand. Although I almost wish it was slightly wider.
Also, download betterTouchTool and enable 2 finger swipe up (or whatever combination you chose) to activate Expose. Works like a charm.
Another point, when I tried the MM out at the Apple store I almost didnt like it. It felt tacky and I had a hard time doing the 2 finger swipe gestures. However, once you get it home, its so smooth, none of the gestures are an issue. I dont know how to explain it.

I moved from a USB wireless Logitech to a Mighty Mouse for my Powerbook, and slightly love the thing, the gestures drew me in and the hope for the future for more gestures to be added, and to me it's really comfy and worth every dime spent on it.

It took me a good couple days to get used to it - I think I had to mentally convice myself that I was no longer using a "conventional" mouse. No matter what size hands you have, it's never going to be one of those mice that fits the shape of your hand. But it is rather easy to use the mouse with just the tips of my fingers, just different than what I'm used to.
Once I let go of my old habits, I started to love the magic mouse. I find it responds well to my movements, I love love love the scrolling and it just feels nice in my hand as I work.
To be fair, I was never one to take advantage of all the bells and whistles of fancier mice. I never used my mouse for Spaces or Expose, so I don't miss that part but I can see how most would.

Iīve used it for 3 weeks now. Personally I agree with the Washington Times review. this is the finest mouse ever. I was sceptic in the begninning, because I work in 3d softwares and they usually require a 3rd button for full functionality. In all other aspects the mouse is great, the sensor works perfect, the shape and design is beautiful, and the multitouch is just so nice when doing everyday stuff with the mouse, like browsing, reading documents etc. But, I was disappointed with the amount of options Apple gave, since the mouse can do SO much more, itīs one of those things you laugh about of how apple do stuff, they have a wonderful mouse with tons of potential, and they donīt even give you the option to add a 3rd mouse button or squeeze zoom or 3 finger click options etc. But, luckily, itīs not something the mouse canīt do, so of course it would happen that someone would make proper options for it. So after I installed BettetTouchTool (http://blog.boastr.net/), and got my 3rd button for my 3d program, I canīt really see how I can use a regular mouse again without longing for the MagicMouse.

I finally got a chance to really give the MagicMouse a test last night. I spent about 4 hours working in Photoshop doing some very precise and complex selections and I couldnt be happier with the MMs performance. Very surprised. I did get some hand cramps, but to be honest I always do when spending that much time working in Photoshop, regardless of what mouse Im using.

I was naturally sceptical but having used it for a week or two I absolutely love it. The scrolling is so precise it's untrue. I love the low profile as it means I can get my two small fingers underneath it.
It's glass so it''ll never discolour or stain and is cleaned really easily. Very precise cursor movement as well. The only tiny problem is the swipe back and forth which was a bit hit and miss to begin with - got a feeling that the more I've used it the more natural it's become so maybe you just need a little time to get used to the swipe.
Shame there's no middle button - really is, as I use it all the time on the web (and in Maya).
Sure there'll be more implemented in the future with software updates as well which will be nice.

I liked this mouse initially, until I had to work from Home. Spending few hours in front of the computer, I realized that the mouse is not very ergonomic. I switched back to my Logitech laser mouse. I love the feature this mouse has, but overall I cannot get used to how low this mouse is sitting.

It is good for flick scrolling and clicking. I think the gestures are worthless. If you put tracking sensitivity all the way up then you can get around the 27" screen ok, if you do it fast enough. The problem i have when gesturing is it knocks my mouse around (when swiping sideways) and is definitely fatiguing. Probably not worth the money to buy, but good to use if you have it, and I just won't use the gestures. I'm sure software updates will resolve the tracking and improve the number of gestures.

Seriously, go download the BetterTouchTool, gives you the middle click via three finger tap or click (or whatever you want to assign to it). It works very well. I have it set to 2 finger swipe up and down activates Expose for me. Very nice addition to the MagicMouse!

Google Maps was like that with the Mighty Mouse too if I recall. I don't know of a fix, but a workaround is to use the zoom control in the top left of the map.
