View Full Version : Waiting for 27" Quad to hit Apple stores thread

Those of you who have heard when your local Apple store will be getting the i5 quad core in stock, please post in here. The earliest I have heard is the end of this week from one of my local stores as they said they have been shipped and on their way. My other local store said not until the middle of the month, a bit more vague and not sure the sales rep knew what they were talking about and just wanted me to leave them alone.

Is this really happening? Apple needs to get these computers out to the forum members quickly or my eyes are going burn from reading all of these updates and semi-updates on how close someone is to actually touching a computer they were charged for two weeks ago.

I don't even want an iMac yet I still find myself excited when someone gets one step closer..."Processing Order to Shipped!" :) and now this thread with what are going to be "sightings" around the country! Apple Marketing/Brainwashing ftw.

Hopefully I will receive mine in the end of next week according to the sales person in one of the local apple resellers. :D

I suppose that we're not as highly prioritized as US customers.

I'm going to stop in tomorrow on the off chance that they come in that day. I won't hold my breath, though. If only they were shipping from Cupertino instead of China...

Unfortunately the sales reps at the Apple stores don't know much either. Basically they have no idea what they get on a day to day basis and said they will only know when they open up each days deliveries. Just will have to call them once a day! :D

Well stopped by my local Apple store to see if they had them; they don't. They told me "the quad's aren't even shipping yet." I told them that I would beg to differ but knew they wouldn't understand. They said as soon as they start shipping they would have them in the store. So I asked why they didn't have them in stock and the sales guy looked back at me like I was an idiot. :D Anyways, hopefully once Apple updates the shipping time on the website the stores will start selling them. Hope for the end of the week or this weekend.

I've been calling every day. I've gotten everything from a "we don't have a date on that" to "they were supposed to be in already," so they're obviously out of the loop. I'm just hoping they're in by Saturday because after this weekend I won't be around an Apple store until after Thanksgiving...

I went to an Apple store yesterday.
After talking to a sales rep for about 10min, he took down my name and number and told me that he would give me a call THE SECOND they got in the store.

Assuming he keeps his word, I'll post when I get 'the call' so others can start checking their stores. I REALLY hope they get in no later than this weekend.

also... we should mention where the stores are located. Currently, I'm 'monitoring' Danbury, CT and Stamford, CT since those are the 2 closest to my house and office.

When I asked a "Genius" at the University Park Village store if they had i5/i7 iMacs in stock, she told me, "No." When I asked if she had any idea when they would be in stock, she told me, "No."

They must be getting inundated with the question because she wasn't even nice about it.

Here's my report:

Boston, MA Store
me: hi, I have a question about product availability
SR: sure, how can I help you?
me: I'm sure you've heard this a million times... but do you know when you'll have the new quad-core iMacs in stock at the store?
SR: which quadcore?
me: uhm... the i5
SR: no, we don't have a release date yet. but maybe 2 weeks or so
me: you asked me 'which quad core'... does that mean you'll be getting i7's too?
sr: uuuhhmm......(pause)....basically everything you see on our stores website is in our retail
me: ok, thank you
*click*
(I'm pretty sure this guy does not know what's going on...)

SR: in about a week (she didn't even think it twice, seems like a canned answer)
me: a week? sure?
SR: yeah, check back in a week
me: ok....thanks
*click*

Stamford, CT store
me: hi, I have a question about product availability
SR: yeah, what's up?
me: I'm sure you've heard this a million times... but do you know when you'll have the new quad-core iMacs in stock at the store?
SR: not sure, but I'll say in about a half a week to a week maybe, but ordering on-line is your best best.
me: awesome, thanks
*click*

5th ave NYC store
me: hi, I have a question about product availability
SR: sure, how can I help you?
me: I'm sure you've heard this a million times... but do you know when you'll have the new quad-core iMacs in stock at the store?
SR: no, no clue
me: really? not even an estimate or an educated guess?
SR: no, not even a guess. but your best bet is to just order in on-line.
me: hhhm... I find that heard to believe... but thanks anyways
*click*

order on-line? are they mad? don't they think I've already considered that option and I have good reasons for not doing it?
maybe I can't take any random day off from work to wait for the package?
or maybe I don't want to wait until December for my order to ship

anyhow... that's what I've got for today

Bethesda Row did not have as of 10am this morning either. Said "they're shipping to users" but did not know when they would get theirs. He said "I hope before Black Friday" for whatever that means.

I have a 27 c2d and would like to supplement (or replace) with a quad.

PS I wonder how come the thegoldenmackid is not here telling you to call the store yourself as he did when I posted a similar thread when the first 27-ers came out. Thought he was going to have an apoplexy.

Well depending on when they bought their computer (14 days) and their relationship with the store manager, many store managers will look the other way and waive the restocking fee if you want to upgrade to a faster computer. Obviously this is store dependent, but Apple really wants their customers to be happy.

why are they recommending you order on-line? I don't see that as being faster... Apple will only get your money faster.
I'm sure they are already being shipped to retail stores, and once they hit... I could just walk over (maybe run actually haha) and pick one up in place of waiting for 2 weeks for it to ship.

maybe they are just trying to reduce the amount of volume the stores will see?

If this forum is any indication of how excited the public is, these are going to sell quickly at the stores. That is why I call/visit every day so that I can pick one up the day they arrive. :D

I still dont know why you would replace? restocking fee. 15%

There's more to the story. I bought the C2D first couple days of release. About 8 days in I started noticing hard drive noise. On day 14, back to the store I went. They said he didn't hear the noise BUT he did notice a number of bad sectors so he offered to replace it. That was last Friday. I saw on the boards that some people's quads had changed to "ship soon" so I decided not to open the box until I got some of the early reviews. I am particularly noise sensitive (amongst other things) so I didn't think the quad would be an option. First reports are so good that the unopened C2D might be going back tomorrow for credit towards a quad.

I very much enjoyed the humongous screen but I could stay with the MBP just a little bit more waiting for the quad. Now i5 or i7? Always quandaries.

Stay on top of the boards in case that rep is like that one was.

I have had this fight with some people on the board on this subject.

I think it's really difficult on the reps to have to answer the same, basically unanswerable, question multiple times a day. We should use the board so that the info that a few people pick up by calling the store is transmitted to all. No reason for all of us to be calling all the time.

At this point, its safe to say no store has any. As soon as someone detects that even one store has one, we can start trying to find out which have them.

Let's use the power of the crowd and the board to avoid driving the stores crazy.

I agree with you Scott6666, however, on the flip side... perhaps that is the price the "Geniuses" should expect to pay when they take a job with Apple. Most people here absolutely LOVE their Macs and its Mac fever every time Apple releases a new product. Maybe they should be upset with Steve for being so secretive and keeping us all in the dark...?

I too bought the C2D on October 23 ( from the Apple Store at the Garden State Plaza in New Jersey ) thinking that heat and/or noise would be an issue with the Quads... OK that's not the entire truth. Part of the reason I bought it was because I absolutely fell in love with the display and I needed to see that baby sitting on my desk immediately. Now I sit here wondering if I should have held out for the Quad.

I too have called the NJ stores several times this week looking for an update and have received the same story everyone else here received. I was lucky enough to make friends with the local Apple Store business manager, whom I purchased the C2D 27" from, and he's assured me about 3 times that he will notify me when the Core i5s come in. If he sticks to his word, and he better considering I've spent about 20 grand at that store in the last 2 years, I will certainly update this thread with the news.

I'm on a trip right now to Colorado Springs, and having never been to an Apple store before (they don't have any within 3 hours of my house), I decided to pop into the Apple store at the Briargate shopping center. I was very impressed with the layout of the store and my jaw dropped when I saw the 27" in person for the first time. But I wasn't too impressed with the people that worked there.

I wasn't expecting them to have the i7 in-stock, but I thought I would check anyway and report back to this thread. The first person I talked to said that it wasn't in stock yet and that they weren't even shipping from the Apple store yet. I casually mentioned that the i7 was in fact shipping now, and they said they would be right back. They came back with someone else and they told me that the online Apple store wasn't shipping the i7 yet. I smiled and casually said, it's no big deal, but they are in fact shipping. They then insisted that this was impossible, so I pulled up this forum and showed him. They seemed shocked and then informed me that I have to watch out because a lot of people "fake" the arrival of their new Mac. I said absolutely, but there's absolutely no way that hundreds of people would fake it at the same time.

I preceded to admire the new 27" and then got the heck out of there as quick as I could.

I've asked the employees directly about that. They have to sign all sorts of confidentiality things and are told specifically not to go onto the boards. Most of them don't seem to know or care that the boards exists, but those that do say they stay off of them. Apple also don't want employees giving out unsubstantiated facts, which would have the be level of many board posts.

All the information you see here you will not find in the Apple store (unless of course it orignated there, like stocking info).

Will they go to a FedEx distribution center first? Are we sure they weren't online orders for customers and instead store shipments? Even if they landed tonight, we might not see them hit the shealves until this week or early next week if this is the case.

Most certainly

Are we sure they weren't online orders for customers and instead store shipments?
Don't really think we have a way of knowing until they get to the FedEx distribution center and sent off to local hubs.
but my guess is that they would be shipping pre-orders and retail supplies at together (or so I hope)

Even if they landed tonight, we might not see them hit the shealves until this week or early next week if this is the case.
Some currier's deliver to commercial locations on weekends, so assuming they did land and were sent to local hubs today...my guess is that they would be delivered on Saturday or Monday.

again, these are just assumptions based on what little knowledge I have about how these postal systems work.

So after reading this I thought I'd give the downtown SF store another call (I already checked in this morning :p). Sadly, they still don't have them in. BUT, when I pressed on their expectations, they did tell me "honestly? we'll get them in next week sometime". :D

I'm sure that's faster than it would be if I placed an order online right now. The only issue is it's starting to bug me that I'm not getting the i7. I really don't think I'll need it though, so... one i5 in the Apple Store next week is worth two i7s "waiting for shipment", so to speak.:)

I would, but since I live so close to Delaware with tax free shopping I was just hoping to purchase the i5 from the Christiana Mall store. I would save around $140 or so by purchasing it in Delaware.

I could be wrong but I believe that regardless of whether you live in Delaware or not, if you physically go to that store, they will still charge you tax.

I retract the above statement. I just remembered that Delaware has no sales tax!

Wow!! Really?!?!? Did they just get them in stock today?

Well since it seems that the Apple Store employees have no idea what is coming until it gets there, Chicago must have received their shipment early. Assuming they are all coming from China, I suppose the West Coast and Midwest stores would get them a day or two earlier than East Coast stores?

Now that I have an i7 on order with MacMall that is actually going to end up being 20.00 cheaper than the i5 would be at the local Apple Store, it's worth waiting a couple of weeks for it.

Well, I was at Fair Oaks (VA) last night and there was a guy there with one - I asked and he said he had ordered it and was bringing it in to have stuff transferred from his old iMac. I was excited for a minute there, though.

Our big local store (Tyson's Corner) is remodeling and closed for another week, I'm suspect they'll have them when they reopen.

Some of the stores are starting to get them. What I've heard is that it's all a matter of when UPS/FedEx drops them off at the store. They seem to be coming in small numbers, about 7-10 per shipment... or at least this is what my local business rep is telling me. I hate to be the guy calling the store incessantly but it seems that's what you need to do if you want to pick one up from a local store.

yeah, I've read on other threads/forums people reporting that their stores has 3 or 5 or 12 - never seen anyone say more than 15 yet. which I find odd, since that is a very ineffective way to ship them. most shipping boxes are shaped/sized they way the are to maximize how many fit on a pallet and I'm sure more than 5 iMacs fit on a shipping pallet...unless they were 'pallet sharing' with other Apple products?

anyways... some NJ Apple stores seem to have some in stock, which means CT should be seeing them today or tomorrow. I need to go to the mall today anyways, so I might stop by when I'm there.

My guess, and this is purely speculative, is that the stores' supplies were piggy-backing w/the pre-order shipments to those regions. Maybe it depends somewhat on the number of orders and available extra space on regional shipments? Again, just my guesses.

I called you a troll because you called me a liar. I didn't lie. I called the store this morning, someone picked up and told me no quad-cores. BTW I also called the Palo Alto store this morning, and while they didn't pick up before 10, when they did they said no quad cores. This person was obviously mistaken as well. In any case, you could have simply asked me how I was able to get someone on the phone (or even phoned in yourself to see if I was telling the truth). You also could have been friendly and helpful by simply saying "hey man, whoever you talked to is clueless...just picked up an i5 on Chestnut!". Got my i5 from Somerset in Troy, MI this afternoon. I called both Partridge Creek and Somerset around noon. Partridge Creek said they didn't have any, but Somerset said they did. When I asked how many they had all I was told is that stock should last at least for the day. When I got there some employees didn't seem to know that the i5 models were in stock. I think it's important to mention that the stores are usually very busy with probably a couple dozen employees, so when you call the store you may be talking to someone who doesn't know a shipment has arrived. If they didn't leave the phone to check, it might be useful to politely ask them to do so.

Traded in my stuck-pixel Quad i5 that I bought at retail yesterday for a new one. Finally, I have one with 0 stuck pixels!!

I originally had a C2D 27'' with 2 dead black pixels, exchanged it for a dead-pixel free C2D 27'', then decided i wanted a quad core so I bought one yesterday with a dead pixel in the dead center of the screen, exchanged it today for a perfect i5.

Definitely return your imacs for a new one if you get one with stuck pixels, as this is more common than I'd have expected. The Apple staff was very accommodating and exchanged it with no hassle whatsoever. I'm very thankful to not have to haul that damn box around in and out of the mall any more, thats for sure.

Not in the Apple store I was in. I walked in and there were three iMac boxes lined up next to the genius bar waiting for people that were purchasing them. I almost wanted to interrupt their purchases just to let them know the quad-cores were available (after I secured mine, of course) but of course it's not my place to do so.

I picked up my Core i5 today (Nov 14) around 2pm from the Menlo Park, NJ Apple store and it was the last one in stock for the day. I wanted the wired numeric (wide) keyboard which actually is a BTO core i5 if ordered online, so I asked the store manager if I can have that instead of the stock wireless with magic mouse. After asking him to swap the original wireless keyboard with the wired one, he paused for a few seconds, and said why not. So what they did was, charged me $49 for the new wired keyboard, and took out $49 off the original cost of the i5 and I went home with the wired keyboard for FREE.

I used my EPP and the NJ tax was around $120 something, and the total was about $1995 for my spanking new 27" core i5 iMac.

I love the MAGIC MOUSE and my Geekbench score is 6532. Hopefully, after my OCZ Vertex Turbo SSD upgrade, that might get better.

When you exchanged the C2D for the Quad - did they charge a restocking fee? I'll be exchanging my C2D this week, and am happy to pay it if needed, but I'd rather not :-)

Yes, I had to pay for restocking because I changed my mind and opted for the i5. Maybe your store will be more kind, you never know.

How much did you have to pay extra to upgrade to the i5 from the c2d?

Hi all,

I picked up the i5 Quad Core machine today at the Apple Store at the Derby Street store in Hingham, MA! The sales rep I worked was excited for me to buy it, as I was the first customer from the store to get the new i5! The manager stated that they heard they were in transit yesterday, so they must have gotten delivered last night or this morning. No word on how many more they had, but I came in at around 130pm and I was the first one to purchase an i5, so I am sure they have more.

I sit in front of this machine and write this post and am in awe of this machine. It is the most beautiful screen I have ever used; bright and beautiful. Of course I am coming from a 6 year old Powerbook G4 that has difficulty reaching any brightness at all (I speak affectionately of that machine of course)..

Any one in great Boston I can confirm Derby Street Store in Boston has the i5!

Good luck!

Setting up my 27" i5 I bought from the Altamonte Springs store in Orlando, FL today. They said they had a "few" in stock when they opened at noon.

Wow, is this thing big and fast!

Woodfield (Chicago/Schaumburg) store - they have "a few" I5s in stock today, but not yet on display. Was told no I7s for the foreseeable future, those will be on-line BTO only.

Apple's quality of employees is REALLY slipping.

Thats quite interesting and funny because I have called several stores in the South West and Midlands and no joy, so I would also conclude that sadly London is the only store with them.

That is of course unless someone else in the UK cares to interject to correct us! Fingers crossed to get them soon if London has them!

I'm glad to see these coming into stock at Apple stores. I was at the Colorado Springs Apple store just a few days ago -- too bad they didn't have them then! (would've saved me the time to have one shipped)

I had to pursuade the clerk at our Apple Store that they might be in stock. He was quite certain they weren't, but I'd called ahead and was told that they were. Finally he asked his supervisor, yada yada yada, I can't wait to get home and set it up. I just hope no one steals it from my car in the meantime...

Ugh. I really just wish the i7 was in the apple store. Ordering online just kills the idea of an impulse purchase, but I'm not going to go to the store and pick up an i5 when I know there's something that much better for only a couple hundred dollars more....

Meh...in a few months there will be an even better option out there and the i7 will no longer be the top of the line. I had no interest in waiting many weeks for an i7 when I could get the i5 instantly. So far, I've been very happy with my purchase. Does everything I could hope for and then some. COD MW (I) runs amazingly. Only issue I have is that iPhoto '09 faces feature didn't work for me. :( I was really looking forward to that feature. Hope they patch it soon... :(:(

The *Store in Clarendon has the Core i5 in stock. I called las night, they told me they had Core i7s, and an employee kindly set one aside. Good thing I called to verify as it was the i5.

Ordered my i7 today, for delivery 7 Dec.
