Man that sucks for all those people that have the new ones, they seem to have so many problems.
I am glad that I have a 3g 15gig, its perfect, and to tell you the truth I like the completely solid state touch sensitive buttons better than the click wheel. I hope Apple fixes the problems with the 4G iPods soon.

so are they insinuating that it is the chinese' fault...? :D
joke aside, that really sucks big time. well, i looked at some in the apple stores and they looked "ok" to me.
off-topic: there was this product that removes iPod scratches on the back panel and the display right?
anyone know what that was called again, or where can i obtain it?

My cousin opened his 4g 20gb iPod today, and it had a small scratch, maybe 1/4"-1/2" long, but you could only really see it under some lighting angles. It just seemed a little odd, but it might wipe off or something.

this stuff is meant to be good for scratches
http://www.ipodcleaner.com/
but I don't want to pay hundreds for something that comes scratched, smeared and tarnished
and I'm ordering one next week!

What really bothers me is that some people are taking their iPods back to the store and being told that the scratches are "within spec" for a new iPod. The only way to get it replaced is if it is "streaked" or really badly scratched. "Minor" scratches and some discoloration is not enough to get a replacement. So not only is Apple shipping imperfect iPods, they consider that to be acceptable.

Any company ships products with cosmetic imperfections. Apple's sleek, simple designs draw attention to them more! Especially the glossy finishes. And then once they're noticed, they get tossed around the web more than scratches on, say, a mobile phone or camera or whatever from some other company. And other companies, like Apple, will refuse warranty service for a purely cosmetic issue if minor. It's reality. Be firm but polite, talk to supervisors, and see how far you can get... but no company will replace everything.
Even so, if it was me with a minor scratch, it would drive me CRAZY and I WOULD work hard to seek a replacement :D That's one reason I lean towards the aluminum Mini.
If there are greater instances of defects that normal for a product, then Apple may have a "first-run" issue to work out. But more likely, it's just more-noticed and more-reported than would be the case with, say, the same defects on a Dell DJ :)

My 4g 40 gig shipped from Shanghai and had no problems with the look of it. It was engraved if that makes any difference.

Perhaps all the more reason to change the "look" of the iPods. The high gloss and polished finish, though aesthetically beautiful, is difficult to maintain. And with all of these complainers out there (who in all actuality will probably do more damage to the finish in their first month of usage than what came with the iPod), it's probably better to adopt a more maintenance free finish. The aluminum case of the iPod mini seems ideal for this purpose.

My 20 had what looked kind of like a big streak accross the front, but after I gave it a good wipe it was gone. I don't know why people are making such a big deal out of this, there's no actual defect in the hardware (other than that wierd noise thing that's going on with some of the units) and it's a cosmetic imperfection in SOME of the units--we're just bound to hear a lot about it because the only people who come on these forums are those with the problems.
Apple is not at fault for your anal retention.
On the other hand, if your unit came scathed brand new, then by all means it's your right as a consumer to raise hell--I think a lot of people are just using this as an excuse to get new units for the hell of it.

Yeah, I agree.
I got a nice free engraving on my 40gig, but I didn't even have the thing 2 days before a dime or q-tip or something in my pocket scratched it up. Fortunately, I arrived at the Michigan Avenue store and bought one of the cases.
I haven't taken it out in like 7 months. Let me see how it looks...
Yep. All scratched up from those two days. (I forgot how small this thing was without the case)

Man, when I get mine, its going in my pocket and possibly scratched up as well. And if it comes with a minor minor scratch that only appears under visible light, then I won't care because the scratches that I put on it will probably mask Apple's scratch after the first month.
You own the product. Don't let the product 0wn you.

Hi guys,
what do you think - should I cancel my order ? It ships on August 16th !
I think that happens if you try to produce cheaper and cheaper and therefore produce products in China instead of USA or Europe.
Cheers

... And if it comes with a minor minor scratch that only appears under visible light...
As opposed to those that appear under invisible light. :D
