View Full Version : Five Things in a Box
Blue Velvet
Nov 14, 2009, 05:38 AM
You and I, we've never met before, but next week we will be meeting in person for the very first time... but before we meet, you send me a box.
With only five things in it.
These five things tell me everything about you. The box is as big as you like, from a small shoebox right up to one the size of a house, but it only contains five things. Things to look at, to smell, to touch, to taste... even to listen to.
When I open the box, what do I see?

Cool thread. Ill need to give this more thought but this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhwbxEfy7fg) would definitely be one of my items. :D

I'd just get in the box as why bother waiting a week.
OR
Chocolate orange bar, hell I might even stretch to a whole chocolate orange.
My dog and if we could have a divider in the box I'd also put my girlfriend's cats and even her.
That is my five taken up.
If I am not allowed livestock:
Switch my girlfriend for a Liverpool shirt
Cats for iPhone loaded with music but predominately for Leftöver Crack and decent headphones.
Dog for Sheep boxer shorts.

a Golden Rule, of course: philosophical, practical, culturally inclusive.
203141
a reference to history, man's inhumanity to man, the work ethic, ironic or otherwise.
203142
a nod to my naturist proclivities dislike for restrictive conventional uniform.
203143
my favourite music, by an outcast and outsider.

Me, a taco, and a 2-liter bottle of diet coke pre-mixed with rum, my yellow blankey, and a camera.
It tells you that I like to eat, drink, my blankey is a part of me, and my hobby. Anything else you need to know you can just ask me because I'll be there too. :) If I cannot put "me" in the box then you get Ball Licker™ because I am mad that I woke up and stepped in his puke this morning.

Thinking about this makes my head explode.
Does a firearm with bullets count as one item or are the magazine and projectiles counted as multiple?;)

Now for real, I have to think a little bit about the five things I would put in the box. Interesting question. :)

Loaded firearm (forget safety) counts as one object.
I'll respond to others and divulge my five things later in the thread. I like the thought that people have put into it so far. :)

You probably want to include a suitcase of cash, and a note too =p
Wait a second, is one wad of cash one item?

It can be loaded, as long as the bullet is not chambered, it can be shipped safely.

1) A picture of my wife giving me a big hug while I'm at work. There's a funny story to go along with this (which I can't share here) but I'd write it on the back.
2) A bottle of Shiner Bock.
3) A Macintosh IIcx.
4) A Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers CD. (of course I could make a mix CD, but I think it's more fun to think of one album)
5) A palm tree.

This is surprisingly difficult to answer which probably says a lot about my confusion about who I really am.
1. An iPod touch - I know its an Apple product but I do like technology, with my favourite music on.
2. An EZ Link (http://www.ezlink.com.sg/index.jsp) pass to symbolise travel and technology.
3. My passport.
4. A copy of the Economist, I like their generally no-******** approach to the world.
5. An alcoholic beverage - I am British after all :p.

you can do so much with a claw hammer
I would put a hammer in my box as well, as a metaphor for the value of mastering a single, versatile tool instead of being merely acquainted with a vast tool shed. We actually have a saying at the gym for newer trainers about "getting a hammer" instead of worrying about understanding a million different techniques. The "hammer" is anatomy and human physiology (structure and function).

Well, then, I will think about it. However, it depends on who you are. If you're my long-lost relative, I'd put family pictures, etc. If you're a stranger that I'd meet only for a day, I'd put my business card, etc. If you're my bride-to-be, I'd put something like my favorite book, my favorite food, etc.

1. A DVD copy of John Waters' Desperate Living for too many reasons. Most importantly:
a. It illustrates how anyone with the will to do so can make a film that is funny, intelligent, disgusting, transgressive, political and relatively popular & long-lasting.
b. Shows how people don't have to be traditionally attractive to be stars.
c. It tears down convention so beautifully, and I am all about that. :)
2. A DVD collection of films I've made with directors Todd Verow, Jeff McHale, Esther Bell and Shawn Durr for the exact same reasons as above. I like to practice what I preach.
3. A box of condoms. Probably one of the most important things a gay man can own.
4. A pomegranate- for stressing the importance of good health.
5. One antique clock from my collection- probably this one from the 30's for being so ahead of it's time.

2. Sky Ball. (http://www.mauiskyball.com/)
I like that. It looks like loads of fun. I'll keep it!
3. My hiking stick (the one I carved).
I'm not sure why, but that really touched me. My granddad had a stick he carved for himself from a piece of wood he had found on the beach.
4) My collection of invasive plant and insect samples - though you would need to request an Import Permit to receive them...
Creepy, but intriguing. How invasive? And can they be trained? ;)

1. A black sheep.

A big fat sticky nug of ganja.
Which I'd always try to share. :)

Yes. Except the Sky Ball and the sticky nug. ;)

Excellent taste, although I haven't heard that one. Have got almost everything else of hers, though. :)
One antique clock from my collection- probably this one from the 30's for being so ahead of it's time.

OK, my five.
1. A hardback copy of the I Ching. Not sure which translation, but probably Wilhelm or Karcher. The Book of Change, many many thousands of years old, it sees all things both near and far. One recent regret I have is not reading it enough over the past year or so. But you can't have my stalks.
2. A copy of a David Lynch film on DVD: Inland Empire It's about a woman in trouble, and is a meditation on identity, personality, grief and redemption. Many won't get it, but some will. You may have to watch it four or five times to get the gist of it, though. Best watched on a dark day.
3. A Pinkie Bar (http://www.cadbury.co.nz/Products/Chocolate-Bars/Pinky-Bar.aspx) Only available in New Zealand where I was born; my mother says I was made from them as it was her main pregnancy craving at the time. So sweet you can't eat more than one in one go.
4. A copy of QuarkXpress The page layout app that I got my hands on. Like all first loves, both adored and despised for what it did to me, and even now today, I still can't get it out of my system.
5. A copy of my quarterly drug prescription All tales to be told could be deciphered from that small piece of paper.
