Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, his sister has said.

Jody Allen, the chief executive of Mr Allen's investment firm Vulcan Inc, told staff in a memo that her brother had begun chemotherapy.

Mr Allen, 56, founded Microsoft in 1975 with Bill Gates but left in 1983, when he was diagnosed with another form of cancer - Hodgkin's disease.

He survived that bout after receiving successful treatment.

"He received the diagnosis early this month and has begun chemotherapy," Jody Allen wrote to staff.

"Doctors say he has diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, a relatively common form of lymphoma.

"Paul is feeling OK and remains upbeat. He continues to work and he has no plans to change his role at Vulcan."

She added that he was "optimistic he can beat this".

:( He bankrolled Space Ship One and the start of the Square Kilometre Array - my sort of philanthropist.

Hope he comes through fighting fit.

Man that sucks for him and his family. The one thing he has going for him that most don't is money. He can buy the best specialists and most personal comfort. That goes a long way to how your recovery experience goes.

My best to Mr. Allen. I hope he beats it again.

He also responsible for launching then killing TechTV/ZDNet which spawned such tech personalities such as Kevin Rose (Digg), John C. Dvorak (PC Magazine) and Leo Laporte (TWiT) along with mainstream anchors Erica Hill (CNN) and Michaela Pereira (KTLA).

Best Wishes

I hope the best for Paul Allen as well. It is really bad when a cancer survivor has relapse decades later. I hope he pulls thru.

Hodgkin's lymphoma survivors do have a small risk (4-5% chance) of developing non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

LiveStrong Mr. Allen.

This makes me so very sad. My cousin in Portugal had this nasty kind of cancer - the non type, which I believe is very had to treat. Sadly he passed away a few years back. We need a cure for this and other cancers. Why can't we target these cancers by medication that will kill these kind of cells?

We have lost so many people with cancers, it is a curse ...

peace - 'baby.

best of luck to him

we really need a cure for cancer

No, there will never be a cure for cancer. His only solution for now or ever will only be chemo.

How many times have we heard that there's hope for curing cancer? That there's promising lab results in mice??? What about the progress about that promising HIV vaccine? What happened to that? How long have the research labs promised and not deliver? It's the pharmaceutical companies folks.

Do you know what I mean? There will never be "a cure" for any disease which they can generate the most money out of. At least that's how I understand of Western medicine.

Scientific research isn't easy and takes time. Problems like this are difficult to solve.

That's some crazy talk there. Let's say there was a cure for cancer, it would still be in the best interests of the pharm companies to release it to the public. One, it would be insanely good for the public image of the company, and two, once they released it, its not like people are going to stop getting cancer, there will always be people getting cancer, so there will always be drugs to sell.

Cancer is very complex. There are drugs that are very effective against some cancers, yet do nothing for others. All cancers are not equal.
Please, read up on it, or talk to an oncologist.

I remember watching ZDtv before it was TechTV and now The G4 Network, they would mention Paul Allen often on Leo Laportes Call for Help and The Screensavers, I miss those shows. I wish him the best.
