View Full Version : Your Favorite Derogatory Political Terms

There are so many. You know you use them; you know you love them. What comes to mind? What are your favorite ones. Funny anecdotes about being accused of being one or accusing someone else?

Please, this is just a light-hearted thread. Let's not devolve into real political discussion or the actual use of these terms.

On the left, I like "pinko" and "bolshie." I can't actually think of any on the right, but I guess that's why this thread exists.

Obviously "Liberal" (often used in conjunction with) :
"dirty"
"commie"
"pinko"
"bleeding-heart"
"clueless"
"hippie"
"tree-hugging"
"soviet"
...in many interesting combinations, often interdispersed with expletives...

also..." you don't know what your talking about..." especially by people who are older than I am, regardless of topic or reality.

any use of a "talking-point"...

also basically anytime a phrase is used out-of-context, without regard to definition, or with irony.

The use of " that's interesting, but " or "I used to think like you..." . No patronizing or condescension please...

FWIW...my father is guilty of all listed above...

in Burnley where I live we have a strong extreme right following.

the words Nazi and fascist get thrown around a bit.

Duff-Man says...up here in Canada both the federal liberal party and the Ontario provincial liberal party have very deservedly earned the nickname "Fiberal" for all the pre-election lies they both told....oh yeah!

I was once accused of being a "heartless neo-con fascist." I of course retorted that the accuser was a "naive tree-hugging commie hippie." :p Of course it was all in good fun ;)

Maybe I've been out of politics too long and/or not reading the right stuff, so can you explain 'spot monkey', 'drywaller' and 'der Feuro' to me?

'Chickenhawk' still makes me laugh, only because I think of Henery Hawk from the old Warner Bros. cartoons.

Limousine liberal's another favorite. I like alliteration.

I've never actually heard any of the terms that vim mentioned...Could you elaborate on their meanings, please?

i LOVE that you found meaning in februrary-lover and votester. except for 'der Fuero', i just made them up.

'der Fuero' was the name given to a currency trader who is a Euro zealot.

I thought votester might have something to do with 2000 and that Feb.-lover probably had something to do with some Marxist/Communist revolution that happened in Feb., but I wasn't sure. I'm glad to know that I'm not so far out of it that all of those terms were actually in use but had passed me by.

However, does anyone notice that we can only come up with terms for leftists? Can anyone think of any terms bashing the right wing? I had trouble coming up with much besides "McCarthy."

hm with being februar a political meaning in austrian history (around 12. (?) februar 1934 the armed militias from the social worker party resisted the governal banning of all parties except the catholic-conservative 'home front' ..the februar riots where shot down after a week of urban close combat with the use of artillery against whole worker settlements (where civilians where living) and massive use of the army who was loyal to the 'home front party')
so you are not that far off ;)

Works for me! Now I can go out and instigate a republican to call me a 'dirty feb!'

the next months the nazis tried to make a coup d'etat (with sponsored guns coming from the NSDAP) in vienna ... and failed... (after that the government reintroduced the death penalty and cut down the last remaining democratic isntitution out of fear)

in juli another coup d'etat from the nazis was amied against the conservatives and had success with the assination of the head of the state Engelbert Dolfuß (who was a dictator nontheless) but weren't able to seize power

untill 1938 nazi terror attacks were everyday business

so far for the offtopic austrian history ;)

hehe, keep it coming! I think in discussions of World War II in the US, relatively little emphasis is placed on the tribulation of individual countries in the European Theatre besides Great Britain, Germany, and France, with the most emphasis being placed on GB and Churchill's courageous leadership.

Not forgetting the Russians of course, to whom 1940-1945 was the Great Patriotic War. We were all just incidental as far as Russian history goes.

Hahaha! I didn't know that! That's awesome.

BTW, should we change this thread title to: "Your Favorite Derogatory Political Terms and an Anecdotal Analysis of the Formalized Dissemination of World War II History in the Dominant Discourse of Various Western Nations?"

I hate all these, but I love to hate them....

"loony" followed by liberal, left, leftwinger, etc

any conservative that plays a pun on "right", as in "we conservatives have right ideas"

bush haters

anybody-but-bush-supporters (basically anyone who supports kerry is accused of this)

the connotation of the word liberal to be bad

"The liberals!!" when rush limbaugh says it

Speaking of Nazis, hardly a day goes buy when a Republican talk show host or commentator doesn't compare someone on the left to the Nazis.

Which is sooooo ironic because Nazism was about as far right wing as right wing gets.

But everyone knows Hitler was bad while Lenin, Stalin and Mao Tse Tung were just some creepy old dudes, if the average American even knows who they were (Stalin killed probably twice as many people as Hitler and Mao did about 100 million).

But Hitler was the "socialist" and everyone knows his deal, so they use him in a tactical ploy that would make Goebbels proud.
Oh, the irony.

i recognized that too....if it wasn't irony² then it wouldn't be funny anymore

but i don't know who was more evil..i put hitler, stalin and mao in the same category

also interesting is how all those other pre-ww2 facistic regimes from other countries have been forgotten ... even moussolini gets forgotten from time to time
