some reuglars with avatars may have won contests where the prize was a tar; or a whole lot of their posts could have been wastelanded

There were all merged into forum. Just do a search for "avatar contests" and you can find a bunch of submissions.
Actually no, members who have gotton enough posts to get an avatar can seem to keep theirs, even after their post count was knocked down, either by the political forums or the Wasteland. Oddness in vBulletin apparently.
Ah, thanks guys, just wondering why I saw a couple regulars with avatars. I didn't know there used to be contests.
I think whe you become a 601 or at Mr. Anderson's level you should be able to somehow "upgrade" your avatar. I'm not sure exactly what that would entail, but whether it's simply a larger avatar than is normally permitted, or something similar, I think that would be cool...
