Is it at all possible for someday a workaround to be created that lets us with updated boot roms jailbreak untethered?
Seriously, come this summer a lot of iPhone fourth generation owners are going to be pissed.

I'm pretty sure it's going to come eventually. Just look at what happened with the iPod touch 2G- everyone said it was likely people would be stuck with the tethered JB and....

Nobody can know the answer to this question until and unless someone finds an exploit.

Seriously, come this summer a lot of iPhone fourth generation owners are going to be pissed.
If they decide to update to a newer model phone, then they should do some research if they desire to jailbreak. Making any assumption that a jailbreak is possible (tethered or untethered) is foolish without being informed.
And besides, no one owes anyone a jailbreak, tethered or untethered.
We receive these tools as gifts of the time and labor of others. Those who have a sense of entitlement are just arrogant.
