intel iMac 24 in freezing/spinning pinwheel

Hello, I have an early '08 intel iMac. (24in, 4GB RAM, 3.06 processor)
I've never had an issue with it until the other day. It will often freeze up with the spinning pinwheel & my only recourse is to shut it down via the power button. Force quit doesn't work. Also, it will somethings hang during start up.
I'll then have to use the option key to get to the desktop. I've done the hardware test..which comes up fine. Additionally, I reinstalled OS X.
(disk 1 archive install where you can keep your home folders) This worked for about a day before freezing again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Try repairing your Hard Drive. If you don't know how, open Disk Utilities, select your Hard Drive and click repair.

Run Disk Utility, highlight the disk and then click on Repair Disk. I had this problem with my new iMac Quad i7 and the disk showed in RED and a note that the disk was faling. Make sure you have a good backup to an external drive.

Thank you. The repair disk button wasn't available, so I'm doing a permissions verify. It's been abut 10 min now. If I need to start up from my install disk, how do I do so?

OK, after using verify disk, it says volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK.

Not sure what to do now.
