The make my life easier button is in Cydia to save the SHSH files in case you need to downgrade the software on a 3GS (only) in the future. Only way to get Cydia is to JB.

Most iPhone settings are saved in iTunes and are restored after a restore to backup operation.

Sounds like you are confusing several unrelated items.

I'm not sure what settings you are talking about specifically, but when you sync in iTunes the phone settings get backed up automatically. Or if you are running an app like Rock App it will back up a list of all your downloaded jailbroken items.

?????

You have me totally confused as to what you are asking about !

If it is SHSH, you can also save those to your own computer, but just as with Cydia, you must be jailbroken.

No, you have to be jailbroken.

You do not have to be jailbroken to capture your SHSH blobs to your own computer. You can use TinyTSS / Umbrella to do the same thing. You need to find out your ECID by putting the phone into recovery mode, then kicking it OUT of recovery mode afterwards. Once you've done that, your phone doesn't even need to be connected for the SHSH blobs to be generated and captured.

Here's the link:

Read the blog. Download the package and read the help file. If you don't understand it what it's telling you, I'd advise that you don't do it. If you do understand, go ahead and you can capture the 3.1.2 blobs on your own computer.

I have actually used Umbrella to capture my SHSH to my laptop. However, I did this some time ago. I was under the impression that Umbrella required a JB to communicate with phone. I just reviewed the procedure and it appears I was mistaken. A JB phone is not required for Umbrella. You are correct.

What good does it do to have these files on your own computer? I didn't know there was any way to spoof the Apple signature server locally.

Yes it's possible. You can get the info via the link I posted above.
