movie to gif

Does anyone know of a free utility for OSX that converts a movie file (preferably mpeg, but I'm willing to convert files) to an animated gif and/or indivdual frames suitable for conversion to an animated gif?

I know such utilities exist on windows, but I can't find one for mac.

Quicktime pro will let you export a tiff sequence.

Quicktime will also let you save as jpeg image sequence. I've done this before and brought in the images into gif builder. works nicely.
