View Full Version : samsung spinpoint f1 hd322hj on a 2004 imac g5?

I just purchased a samsung spinpoint f1 hd322hj (you can take a look at the drive here (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152096)) for use in a 2004 imac (specs listed here (http://support.apple.com/kb/SP69)).

I'm getting cold feet, though, since one reviewer over at Newegg says the following:

Doesn't work with older motherboards that only support 1.5Gb/s. You're supposed to be able to use a jumper to lower the hard drive speed from SataII to SataI, but instead Samsung has you install a software patch to change the speed. Here's the problem, if your BIOS/motherboard doesn't recognize the hard drive, no software is going to be able to patch the drive. Terrible design, would not recommend this to anyone who has an older mothetboard that uses SataI/Sata 1.5Gb/s

I know that the 2004 iMac G5 is SATA1-1.5Gb/s, and usually it's not a problem to drop in a SATA II drive into an older machine. But I'm not so sure with this particular Samsung F1 model. Has anyone else had problems with this drive (or a similar problem in a 2004 G5 with a different drive)?
