Looks nice, too bad they insisted on putting that raised logo on the back. Makes the phone rock a bit when on laying on the back.

Good point! I didn't catch that one. I'm curious on how clear can this case will be after some x amount of time. If not I'll go for the black one (after seeing reviews of course)

Just got mine. I really like it. Very similar to the new Speck SeeThru, but it covers the chrome bezel. Fits great, feels awesome in the hand. A bit thinner than the Candyshells. Feel is a bit slicker than the iSkin solo (I have the black opaque one) Great pack ins. two dock port plugs and two headphone plugs as well as a screen protector and small microfiber. I think I will be using mine over the my other hydrocarbon style cases now.

I really like this case, mainly because it is protective yet slim, one of my favorite cases is still the Speck Candyshell but it's somewhat thick.
You get screen protectors, 2 dock port covers, 2 headphone port covers and a cleaning cloth.
The Switcheasy Vulcan covers everything except the vibrate switch. It feels good in the hand its smooth yet feels tacky, as if it won't slip out of my hand.
It looks very cool, I got the "smoke" color version. I don't have any cases that are similar so I can't directly compare this to my other cases unfortunately.
There is one thing that is bothering me about this case is that the camera hole does not line up.
I'll have to try it out for a few days anyway before I can tell if it will be a case I will use regularly. Right now I am not sure if it will be.

2 questions
Is this really scratch resistant on the outside?
If you lay on the front is there a rim around the screen so it doesn't lay flat on the screen?
Jmacman78
Dec 5, 2009, 09:05 PM
It seems pretty scratch resistant. Only time will tell but it seems like it will hold up better than hard plastic cases in terms of scratching. There is a lip over the edge that keeps the screen from laying flat.

Nice. I just ordered the Speck Candyshell 1 month on jr.com so I am debating on whether or not to return it and get this one.
I like this one since it's slimmer and it can't slip out of your hands like the CandyShell. But the CandyShell won best case of 2009 on ilounge.com so I am so confused on what to do...=)

Just ordered mine today... I have the Speck Candyshell, but the bottom lip cracks almost right away, so I'm looking forward to this one because it looks more reinforced. Also it looks pretty beautiful! I ordered the clear one for my black iPhone. If it comes with any imperfections, I'm sending it back and getting a new one. It was between this case and the new Speck Seethru... I might get the new Seethru later too. I'll post photos of it on my black iPhone when I get it in case anyone is interested.

I think the Candyshell is definitely better drop protection, same with the Seethru, with the Vulcan I feel my phone is a little more prone to being broken if I drop it, it isn't a very thick case, though the corners seem pretty tough.
I really do like the Vulcan, I like that everything is covered and I feel that I do get some drop protection and that it is thin and adds minimal bulk to the phone. I'd say it's definitely worth trying out if you like these hydro-polymer type of cases. My real only gripe is I wish the camera hole lined up better.
I use my Candyshell the most and my SeeThru and Otterbox Commuter are in second. I am not sure if the Vulcan will make me stray from using those three the most.
Also my Candyshell's bottom has yet to crack and I take it off somewhat often to put other cases on. Maybe I'm gentler than most people or just lucky I don't know but has yet to be an issue for me and I was worried about that when I first got it.

the only reason I don't like the Speck see-thru is the polycarbonate case which will scratch alot over time. this Switcheasy Vulcan is the thing I have been looking for for a while. now we will have to see if it truly stands up to it's name.....

I am just wondering if you can sort of massage the case into place so that camera hole lines up a bit better. I have the iSkin Solo which is made out of the same material and it also does not line up perfectly at first, but if you sort of massage it into place, it will line up just fine. <SHRUG>

Does the Switcheasy logo on back make the phone wobble when it's flat on a table? That was my biggest gripe with the Neo; it never sat flat.

Wow wingnut8, thanks for posting the pics for a white iPhone.
I have some questions though, does the surface feel like a Solo FX case? (if you haven't own one, don't answer this)
Do you think stains will be a problem with the case?
Is it a dust magnet?

Before this I was using the black solo. I can say that I like this a lot better. the case seems to be a tighter fit than the solo. The surface is pretty comparable, I keep my phone in my front jean pocket and have no problems getting it in or out. As for staining, I'm not really sure. The surface doesn't seem like one that would stain easily because of it's smoothness. I have a switcheasy neo and the back spine of it stained pretty easily, but I don't think this would like that. As for dust, I've only noticed a littled around the edges, but nothing major.

Mine covers the silver ring a tiny bit, its really bugging me. Can you take a pic of yours? I may ask Switcheasy to replace mine and see if its any better with another case.
Either way I don't think I am going to be keep on using the vulcan, I just don't think it is protective enough for my needs. I am still a big fan of my Candyshell and Otterbox Commuter.

I am about to replace my Belkin Silicon case in a preemptive attempt to stop the loosening of the material that is already starting to occur. I am curious about this case. I was going to get either the neo or the capsule rebel serpent, but this interests me because those other two have known problems which I really don't want (breaking I piece and saggy bottom silicon respectively).
What I want to know is this:
What exactly is this case made out of?
-Is it a hard case? A rubbery case? Does it scratch? Does it attract dust? etc.
How well does it protect the device?
How does it compare to the neo and the rebel?
how firm is the grip around the iPhone? Is any of the bezel showing?
Is there any chance of it stretching out in the future?
I know I am asking a lot of questions, but there is no info ANYWHERE.
Thanks in Advanced :D

It's a flexible rubbery plastic pretty much. It's not sticky like silicone cases. It's thinner and isn't going to give as much protection as the neo or rebel. None of the bezel is showing.

I have a black iphone with a clear case. I'll put pictures up a little later.
The one thing about it is that there is a sort of snowy texture on the inside (and probably the black) case that causes the black back of the iphone to only kind of show through the case. It looks more like a grey. the vertical "V" lines and edges of the case that cover the chrome are the only spots where the case is perfectly clear.
I'm not sure if I like the look of it yet, but other than that, the case feels amazing.
As far as the camera buttons not lining up, you can definitely massage it into place.
It's not a dust magnet, though there is potential to get dust trapped under the edges of the case. I can't imagine dust getting to far in, though, as the case lays directly on the back of the phone.

mtpflyers also put the case on wrong... the instructions say to put it on from bottom to top -- not buttons first. this is probably why his case holes didn't line up right away. Like I said before, if it's not lined up right (even after you put it on according to the instructions), you can massage it into place. The cutouts were fine on mine.
As for the defect on the bottom of his clear case: I don't know what's up with that.

I'd say its scratch resistant, but not scratch proof, it doesn't scratch nearly as much as a hard plastic case. It does get a good amount of fingerprints on it. Mine fit pretty well except I did end up noticing the upper right seemed a tiny bit off near the chrome, and my camera hole was way off.
Switcheasy is sending me another stating mine was defective with the camera hole so far off.
I do like the case quite a bit, hopefully my replacement remedies the couple off issues I had.

Just got my Black case yesterday and so far I'm very happy with it. The camera lens sits slightly high to the left in the hole, but it's not as severe as in the photos (maybe a 1mm off-center deviation?). Here are some thoughts
Likes:
- Love the grip/feel of the composite
- Fits very well. Snug without any play on the sides
- Can still slip it in my pants pockets without added bulk or snag.
- The black is opaque enough to turn the whole iPhone into a solid black object, while still allowing the emblem and text to appear.
- The screen protector is very good, and they give you two. I normally HATE putting anything between my finger and the touchscreen, but it feels just like the glass (more slippery even) and there are no air bubbles.
- The headphone / dock plugs fit very well and they give you two sets.
- The buttons feel great.
Minor Quibbles:
- From the manufacturing process, there's a line that runs across the edge that you can feel cutting into your palm/ fingers when you hold it. It'd be perfect if it were completely smooth all around.
- At certain angles the screen protector has a kind of rainbow / oily sheen to it. But only when the screen is completely black do you see it. If looking directly at the screen (perpendicular view), it is not visible.
- The cleaning rag is tiny - like a 2" square, like an afterthought. Still, no biggie, best to have your own rag already and not rely on this one.
By the way, I had a hell of a time trying to put on the screen protector. I made a few mistakes with the first one, then I peeled it off and tried again only to get dust particles stuck in between. Here's a tip. If you get dust stuck to the screen protector while trying to put it on, just get a piece of scotch tape and slip it under the screen, press down and the pull up. The dust will come off easily onto the piece of tape. Then try again.

I bought the clear one for my black 3G and I LOVE it. Its clear enough to let the design of the phone show through. I like how you can see the logo on the back through the case. It has the feel of a hard case once it is on but with that nice rubbery grip. The case totally covers the volume rocker and sleep/wake button.
My favorite part is that it doesn't scratch! All of the hard cases I have ever had, especially the clear ones, end up getting all scratched and look like crap after a while. This one is semi-soft but it really feels like a hard case once it is on. Don't hesitate on this one especially at the price.

Well Ive had this case for about 2 weeks and at first thought this might be the case to end my long search for the ultimate case....unfortunately doesnt work for me. the case looks great on the phone. Its very thin and adds virtually no bulk. the bottom did start sagging which allowed dirt to get in. The back seems to scratch and the finish eventually wear away. The sides also have flash thats sharp and uncomfortable in the hand. Fortunately Switcheasy was very prompt in their email response, and I'll be able to return it. Maybe i'll try out their new torrent case.

What about fingerprints on the clear version? I saw a review of the black one and fingerprints were a big issue. Also, are you using a screen protector and, if so, any issues with bubbling? I sent back my iskin solo fx se because it made my PS Anti-Glare bubble (no such issues with my Seidio Innocase). Could you maybe post some pics?

I'm using the clear Vulcan on a white iPhone, and IMHO you can hardly see the fingerprints - they're there but because of the white background color of the iPhone, you won't notice it.
For the bubbling issue - there are none.
I wish the bottom won't sag, for a new case I personally like it so far.

Question for anyone with a clear version, who wears jeans.
My biggest worry about this case is staining. I had the Incipio NGP clear for a while, but it turned a green/blue color from my jeans pocket.
Does anyone with the clear version put it in their jeans often? And if so, have you noticed any discoloration?

Keep us posted if you can. If you are able to give it some serious jeans pocket time I'd love to know if it's a green/blue tint after a few weeks.
Thanks!

Will do. I'll probably post it right away once I see some tint on the case since I use a white iPhone in it.

Ordered this case on the 22nd... received it yesterday on the 24th. The thing I like about Switcheasy is the quick shipping, considering I live in Florida and they ship it from California. Anyway, I bought the black case for my white phone... looks like a smoke color and the logo and text on the back of the phone are still visible, which I like. I do like the Vulcan / Star Trek design on the back a lot also. Very clean and simple.
I've owned two Rebel cases in the past, both which the bottom sagged. This one seems pretty sturdy and tight around it, hoping that it won't sag.... but who knows. If it does, I will use the hair dryer / rubber band / freezer trick. Hopefully it doesn't come down to that.
The main reason I bought this case though was because I own the iSkin revoClip. I used to own the older style ones, which held my Rebel perfectly, but that broke when I was sitting weird. so I ordered the newer ones, think it was the same width, but they made the new design thinner. Long story short, the Vulcan fits nice in this belt holster.
I'm liking it so far... esp. the headphone jack protector and new style dock protector. I will report back in a week or so if any problems arise.

Weird. I ordered mine on the 12th and didn't get it until the 24th...and mine only had to go half the distance as yours.
I got the black case for the black iPhone. Looks great. All the ports lined up w/o having to massage the case. Hopefully it protects well

Mine shipped on the 18th and the tracking hasn't changed so it looks like it isn't coming today. Maybe Monday it might come. I want to order the torrent as well but I will just wait till mygearstore.com gets it in stock as it never takes more than 3 days to get it an I live in New York.

Dont like this case at all.
Shows fingerprints and scratches.
Alignment is off.
The only reason I did not return this is the plug in protectors for the earphone jack and the dock fit when I use my SGP Neo.
But I have a case body that I will never use and probably throw away.
I don't understand how this crappy material gets used. Dont these guys actually use their products and test market them...?
I think not.
The only advantage over my SGP Neo is the case is one piece.

I'm still liking this case a lot, but the edges are starting to become an annoyance. As mentioned previously, the edges where the material was cut feels like it's going to cut my hand. haha. Anyone have a solution for this?

Contact them via email and they might give you a replacement, depending on the nature of the case's problem. That's what I did before when I had the Neo.

What's the best/safest way to clean the oil build-up (from hands) on the screen protector?

put a small bit of dawn soap on a moist papertowel and scrub it...careful not to have the towel too wet (dont want water dripping into earpiece)
would reccomend shutting phone down, cleaning, waiting for any extra water you may have gotten in earpiece to dry up, then starting it back up once everything is dry - not necessary but just to be safe
if you use too much water, once phone is shut off use a vacum to suck water out of speakers or earpiece (DONT use hairdryer or fan...will push water further in) voice of experience :D

A couple of people in here mentioned that they were using a clear Vulcan with a black iphone. Is there any way you guys can post some pics of that combination? I'm very interested in this case but I haven't seen the clear version on a black phone yet. I'm also curious if the clear on black shows fingerprints and if the case bubbles your screen protector. I had the bubbling problem with my iskin solo fx se and it's one of the reasons I ended up sending the case back for a refund. The buttons were also very hard to press with the iskin but I would assume that's not much of a problem with this case - Switcheasy is known for attention to detail in this area.

I think the white case looks even cooler on the black iphone than the black case... the cool V design stands out much more... here are some pics (i don't have the plugs in):

That is the only negative thing about my Neo.

A pet peeve of mine, that EVERYONE here seems to use... This effect is NOT called "Watermarking." Look up "Newton Rings."

I picked my wife up a iSkin Solo FX and I liked the way it fit, so I picked up the regular iSkin Solo in solid black for myself, and I wasn't crazy about the fit around the bezel. I went ahead and ordered the Vulcan today, and I'm hoping I like it more.

I did. I like the material, and the fit is decent, but the bottom portion bothered me. The piece that covers the chrome bezel on the bottom was easy to bend away from the chrome. The iSkin Solo is sort of the same way, but the Vulcan looks like it may solve that issue having separate holes for the mic/speaker and dock opening. Plus, the bonus of the headphone and dock covers are nice with the Vulcan. I'm looking forward to checking it out.

@Daremo I've noticed the NGP little bending on the lower side on a picture posted on italian forum, btw my Vulcan has a similar behaviour too, honestly less than the NGP, maybe because of the dock connector protector fitted in..

My Vulcan arrived today. I'm liking this case so much more then the iSkin Solo. AND, I've come up with a solution for the bottom lifting problem when the dock cover is in place.
I'll put up a review, and video, also showing the solution possibly tomorrow. :)

nice! daremo do you have a white or black iphone? and what color did u get for the vulcan?
also, is it thinner or thicker than the iskin solo? I found the NGP to be a bit thicker than the solo, but wasn't happy with the NGP overall.

I have a black phone, the wife has white, so I can check on both colors. I picked up the black (or smoke) color case for my black phone.
I think it's about the same thickness as the iSkin Solo. If there is any difference, it's slight. Not much at all.

Has anyone purchased any of these cases which would you reccomend? They look almost similar except the M looks a bit Bulky?
This site has alot of accessories for the iphone. Incipio,Switcheasy,Belkin etc.. that i couldn't find on other sites.

My Clear Vulcan case has turned yellow. I have had it since January. I just sent an email to SwitchEasy with Photo's and a receipt. I have asked them to send me a new "Smoke" colored one instead if at all possible so I won't have to keep dealing with a yellow case every 4 months for the next 2 years!
I really love the thing and bought it to replace my SE Capsule Rebel which I loved, it was just a little too thick for me, so I went with the SE Vulcan and loved it until it turned yellow. I just put the Capsule Rebel back on it last night.
Hopefully SE will do the right thing and send me one in "Smoke", we will see!

Interesting, I just got my replacement too yesterday because of the same issue - yellowish case, due to normal usage. If after three or four months this happens again, I'm gonna follow what you did - ask for the "smoke" (black) one.

So I was told they cannot replace it with a different color and I will only get a replacement of the original product I ordered. Guess I'll have to keep asking for a new case every month or two from them with the 2 year warranty I have with them.

Here is the email I sent this morning concerning the replacement. While I didn't link directly to this thread, I did mention it. For the record, I'm not trying to be an "A**" about it, I LOVE the case and their products, just not that it will keep turning yellow. I may put the old clear one back on and call the color "Coffee"....:p
Hello Celine,
I have received a new "Clear" Vulcan case. I had requested a replacement in "Smoke" versus "Clear" due to the "Yellowing" of the "Clear" Vulcan case after only 3-4 months. I would rather have the "Smoke" Vulcan case and be done with this replacement process as the new "Clear" one you sent will probably turn Yellow in another 3-4 months and the "Smoke" would hide any "Yellowing". I will now have to go through with this process again and again until the 2 years are up which is extremely poor customer relations to keep your customers unhappy with one of your products!! I just want you to make it right!
I have several people following my plight via the forum at www.macrumors.com concerning the "Clear" Vulcan case and my situation regarding my case who have had similar issue with the "Clear" case as well. I will now have to give them this update. I am very surprised you would not resolve this to the satisfaction of your customers.
So at this time I would say that I am fairly dissatisfied with the company I have been a fan of since I purchased my "Pivot Dock" from you as well as a "Capsule Rebel" and "Rebel Touch".
Regards,
SimplyBlue
