View Full Version : Why is my time machine backup not faster? 8mb/s wireless tops?

Hi,
I have Time Machine set up so that my first gen unibody Macbook backs up to an internal sata drive on my MacPro. My desktop is wired (ethernet) into the router and my laptop is wireless. The router is a Belkin Wireless N.

MACBOOK )))wireless)))> ROUTER ---wired---> MACPRO HARD DRIVE

Here's my question - I noticed that my Macbook is not backing up nearly as fast as I believe it should. It seems to be backing up at a rate of around 3 to 7MB/s, regardless of whether my router is set to broadcast b+g+n or JUST n.

If I'm backing up on a wireless b+g+n signal, I should expect what I am getting (g) - around 6.75 MB/s, correct?

But if I am on an N only signal, I should be getting much faster, correct? If I should be getting faster and I am not (as I suspect), what would you believe is to blame? The router?

Hope this makes sense. I doubt this will help, but here's a screenshot video:

Thanks!

That is a tricky question because many things can hinder your wireless connection. I have found speeds vary throughout the day. It also depends what is also using that wireless connection. I think if you are consistently getting that speed then you should text transfer rates of other things. Also, you said you are backing up to an internal drive that is in a desktop machine? A good idea, never seen it myself, but I wonder if that hinders performance.
