Photoshop "Initializing Type Tool" every time I open it.

Do you have a lot of fonts installed on your machine?

or perhaps some sort of corrupted font?

Try opening FontBook and checking for duplicate fonts. It will show in File/Resolve Duplicates if there are any. Then turn off any foreign language fonts unless you need them, especially Chinese, Japanese and Korean. The Osaka font folder is about 9MB, even though you only see the English typefaces.
