View Full Version : CD player + Amp suggestions?

My parents are looking to get a decent quality CD-player + Amplifier to play music in the living room.

We've got speakers, so that's not an issue at the moment. (For your info, they're two large (2.5ft high) speakers rated at 8 ohm/50 watts.)

We don't need 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound, don't necessarily need an AM/FM tuner. At best, don't want it to be ginormous either.

Some of the options we've seen in the stores today are...
NAD Electronics Amp (http://nadelectronics.com/products/hifi-amplifiers/C315BEE-Stereo-Integrated-Amplifier/)
Sony Stereo Amp (http://www.sonystyle.ca/commerce/servlet/ProductDetailDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10001&productId=1006147&navigationPath=45940n32100n32104)

Otherwise, the only CD players we saw were a 5 CD changer Sony one and 2 models by some other company, whose name I forget, basically single CD and 5 CD changer versions.

What should we be looking for in amplifiers?
Do 5 CD changers break often?
Any other thoughts?

Thanks for any info really!

The amp is a good idea. Unless you care a lot about audio quality any 50W to 100W amp made the a big-brand audio company will be good enough.

But why a CD player? Just connect an ipod to the amp.

CD players are pretty much going the way of turn tables. Rip the CDs to the computer then sych an iPod. Get one of the iPod docks that has a power supply.

But if you do want a CD Pllayer don't spend much. The qualit of the sound is very close between all of them.

Thanks for the reply.

I share your thoughts - I'd probably get an AirPort Express and stream music via AirTunes... Eventually get a Mac mini (server edition?) and use it as a file/media server plugged in to the TV!

But hey, it's not my money and I guess they want a CD player... I will pitch the idea though!

At the moment we're looking at this combo :
Amp : Pioneer SX-A6-J
CD : Pioneer PD-D6-J
