Apple TV setup, will this work?

I'm thinking of buying Apple TV for the second time after researching XBMC on it. Just wondering if this will work,

TV - Apple TV ------- Airport Extreme - USB Hard Drive
Using SMB file sharing?

Also does XBMC run smoothly on apple TV?
