Right, i've had enough of this. Apple SORT IT OUT.

The issue is basically the REDICULOUS amount of power require to decode/play audio. It basically kicks the CPU out of power saving mode and uses 30-50W more!

iTunes playing "Halo" from the iTunes store (does it will all songs!)

Here is the temps while playing a 1080p Star Trek trailer from the Quicktime site... same temperatures yet its decoding 1080p video? Riiight apple.

Power usage (and im pretty confident these are correct!)

Nothing playing/iTunes playing music.

Now im going to download Xbench to see if there is any performance change...

I wonder if I submitted this information to a few news sites Apple might get on top of this?

Edit:

Xbench performance DROPS by 20-25%!!!!

Maybe.
Or maybe you'd just get told you maybe could use the search facility... ;)

I've seen that thread. I've posted in it.

For the MP2009 owners I decided a separate thread was required on the issue.

That thread was (and still is) just for the 2009 Mac Pro. No earlier Pro has this issues.

I agree. When reporting this issue to Apple, I and many others have been told that these temps are "within limits". This performance hit however brings this issue to a whole new level. A workstation class computer that ties up 25% of it's CPU resources just to play a song in the background is simply DEFECTIVE.

I am going to call into Apple again and report this as a performance/thermal/power issue instead of just reporting it running hot like I did last time. Another favorite Apple line is "We have never had a complaint about this before". I think we could beat them at their own game if we were to all note our Applecare Case #s in a common place.

Has anyone thought of contacting an editor at MacWorld? What you need is more media attention, not banging on Apple's door. Apple will only fix a problem if it gets a lot of public attention over it, not if a lot of people complaint to Apple.

FOCUS ON MEDIA ATTENTION!
