Hay guys, vBulletin's reached version 4! I was looking through the features (http://www.vbulletin.com/index.php?do=features), and it looks like some of the stuff will be of use to us. However, our "Forum Spy" feature may not work without modifications on this version, which is a shame.

It would be a pain without Forum Spy!

Before upgrading vBulletin MacRumors will have to ensure that a number of customizations and extensions are either compatible or are made compatible, including Forum Spy, the search system, and mobile.macrumors.com. You won't have to do without these features -- or equivalent new versions.

+10000. Some members don't use this, but I find it invaluable.

If we think like this in the world of software, we'd still be on Tiger today :D

Because it's crap? I've used SMF and the admin control panel had to be the most unintuitive piece of garbage I've ever used....and I've used Vista. You get what you pay for.

Agreed. Also, the theming system in SMF just is utter crap.

No, I had no idea it had been that long.

Well I would would "already" because in the past year I think they went from 3.6 to 3.7 to 3.8 and now 4.0. Its been release after release. Kinda crazy because how they use to do it was slower. More time in between 3.4 and 3.5

I have only once seen a vBulletin that wasn't the default theme with different gradients. If it's so easy to theme, why does every freaking vB site look the same?!

To name a few. And look at my site in my signature. Might be the default theme but VB4.0 look so nice. I love it.

i dont think ive ever seen a vB board with the default theme...do you even know what the default theme looks like?

thats not correct either, vb 3.0 to 3.5 was released in the first year of the software like anything else they worked the bugs out at the beginning, after that it was nearly a year between each 3.6 (aug 06) 3.7(nov 07) and 3.8 (apr 08)

thats right, macrumors is using forum software that is almost 3 and a half years old  same version as when i joined several years ago

but like someone said...if it aint broke..

True but as someone else said, if we thought like that we'd be using tiger still ;). But VB4.0 is so much more nicer. I love the admin control panel compared to that of 3.6. Just saying :)

The vB 4 and 3.x admin CPs are practically the same.

Haha so true, I think the next time MR has a change, it'll be because of the impending Y3K bug crisis :p

In years to come this site will seem so very very dated, but still, the forums are a good example of function over form, and I like that, I don't come here for glitzy graphics, that's what a 14 year olds myspace page is for.

I think MacRumors should redesign the site to look like HavenWorks.com.

Don't bother upgrading to vBulletin 4 just yet. Myself and quite a few other vBulletin owners are not best pleased with it. Wait for the (numerous) bug fixes to arrive. Plus the new pricing scheme is ridiculous.

I would however say that vBulletin 3.8.4 has been working great on my site for a while and has the advantage of being compatible with most mods (with a little tweaking here and there).

i find it nice though that instead of a 1 year license with downloads for that year, you now get every 4.x update for the life of 4.x]

i was referring to the default colors
