iMovie is a DV editor use the thing that the previous poster suggested to convert them to DV.

iMovie doesn't import mpegs.

Most methods of conversion will strip the sound out of your movie--MPEG Streamclip will not do this. It's free, but it requires the Quicktime MPEG2 Player Component. That costs $20 but it's well worth it, as is Quicktime Pro for that matter.
