HD rental in ATV on old films

I'm fairly certain that I will get an answer on this quickly that will make me feel daft but I went to rent National Lampoons Xmas vacation and noticed that you can rent it in HD.

My question is this:

If it wasnt filmed in HD how can they offer this?

next question:
is there a noticeable difference to merit paying for the HD version rather than the normal?

Now, as for whether or not the video transfer of the film was recently redone to take advantage of modern HD video is something else entirely. And that I don't know the answer to. You'll have to see if there's been a "remastered" version done recently. No point in renting an "HD" version of the same crappy VHS-quality video transfer...

If so, then depending on your particular TV setup, you should see some benefit.

I can tell you right now the Blu-ray was really poorly done.
