It's sign language (American Sign Language) I jsut don't know what he is trying to say. . .
Cool, a sign language thread - now we just need the braille thread and we'll be good to go! :D
Not being a signer, aside from a few simple ones, what exactly are you saying?

Although it's not customary to translate for everybody (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=83391), I'm asking if anybody knows ASL, then saying I represent the ASL here on Macrumors. Gotta keep the language alive!

You guys don't get it? Jesus, he's parodying our whole language argument. He knows almost no one is going to understand sign language and he's probably targeting my comment specifically as saying "I want to keep the language alive." If that's what's going on, whatever. But if you genuinely want to keep it visible here, I think that's awesome. Fight the good fight.

LOL! When I saw this thread, titled "ASL thread (56k beware!)" I thought it was a typo for ASDL! As in the broadband thread - 56k people keep out or visit at their peril! But in fact, it stands for "American Sign Language" and the warning to dial-up users is that it will take a long time to load the pictures!
That just made my day!

I'm pretty sure I'm the only native ASL speaker on this forum. I was born profoundly deaf and have been signing since I was 6 months old. That's right. Six months. I had a vocabulary of approximately 500 signs when I was a year old.
So Kingsnapped, you have a deaf girlfriend or just some gal who knows sign language pretty fluently?

I'm not fluent in ASL -- I took it to satisfy my foreign language requirement at UCSD.. but I fell in love with the language and ever since have been trying to get practice in here and there. But unfortunately, the practice isn't as often as I'd like it to be.
Watching me sign, I realize I have a bad habit of mouthing words which I need to break. Also, that I chew my tongue.. but I do that when I'm not signing too. *sigh*.

Hey! Nice to meet ya too! :) You're in San Francisco. I'm sure there are some organization like we have here for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people. We have silent dinners every week on Tuesday nights to which anyone is invited and we sign to each other. Great practice for the hearing people who come. I can attest that one of my best friends has become very fluent by doing just that.

I remember my friend has a deaf grandmother, he knows sign-language but mostly just told his grandma that I eat a lot and that I was big... What a friend

18 makes a lot more sense than 88. You did seem a little young looking to be that old. I don't think even Botox be that good.
Actually, I have been getting more into it lately. There are a few Deaf social events that happen on a monthly basis here in the bay area. None of them are dinners -- they are all coffee house events or bar events. One of them happens a few blocks from me. I've gone to it in the last few months. It's only once a month though.
A few hearing former ASL students have started a weekly practice group, but none of us are actually fluent in ASL so it's almost like the blind leading the blind.. er.. the hearing leading the hearing. But it's definitely better than nothing. :)

I was able to see the video fine (after it quit "buffering") but, I'm sorry, as much as I do not advocate piracy, this may be reason enough to "acquire" pro for Windows.
If you are paying for a G5, it's okay. WMV needs to die.

But it was the best I could aproximate with my limited ASL skills. The language has no 'be' verb, which makes doing the "To be or not to be" quite difficult for a measely hack like me!

That's one of my favorite parts of ASL. There is and isn't, depending on one's view. AFAIK, there is no "to be" or "be", but there are "was," "were," etc. and they are technically conjugations of the "to be" verb. My interpreter would actually spell out "be" if there were no other way to accurately portray the "to be" verb in ASL. To sum up, it varies by person. Me, being raised the Signed Exact English way, I do have a sign for "be."
And remember, Sneeper, "to be or not to be" indirectly refers to suicide. Therefore, one could argue that you could say "to kill myself or not to kill myself" in ASL as a replacement.
To be, or not to be? That is the question. Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer... the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune... or to take arms... blah blah.
I knew that AP English was worth it. :p
