Bluetooth FIle Exchange now works better with Bluetooth-capable Hewlett-Packard printers.
Resolves an issue in which an application that's performing an asynchronous Bluetooth operation could quit unexpectedly, if the computer went to sleep before the data transfer was complete and the "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" preference setting was disabled.
Addresses an issue in which Bluetooth File Exchange could unexpectedly quit if you tried to copy several files but one or more of them already existed at the target location.
If you had difficulties connecting to the Internet with a Comcast cable modem and your account uses DHCP configuration (as opposed to PPPoE), then this update can help you connect more easily. If it doesn't, contact Comcast for further assistance. (An example of this issue would be that your computer can't get an IP address when connected to the cable modem, and your Network preferences are set to configure via DHCP.)
Improves the way Safari handles certain kinds of GIFs, including ones that could cause Safari to quit unexpectedly.
Reintroduces shorter server pathnames; the overall limit remains 89 characters, but now only 24 characters (instead of 39 with Mac OS X 10.3 through 10.3.4) are reserved for the beginning of the pathname. More...
Image Capture can now import MPEG-4 movies (.MP4) from compatible digital cameras.
Resolves a potential data loss issue after renaming a Mail mailbox file.
Addresses an issue for Mac OS X 10.3.4 in which Installer might unexpectedly quit when installing software that has a Japanese name.
Corrects an issue in which analog speakers connected to a PowerBook or iBook during sleep sometimes didn't produce sound after waking the computer.
Resolves an issue with Mac OS X 10.3.4 in which the internal microphones of some iBook (Dual USB) computers would not be available to applications or Sound preferences.
Allows the "Attach" button of Eudora version 6.0 and 6.0.1 to work as expected.
Improves support for NTFS-formatted volumes.
Updates the libpng (Portable Network Graphics) component.
Includes recent Security Updates.

All seems fine here after installing on my Tibook. No problems (no noticed improvement either) after about 10 minutes.
I repaired permissions, but there were none to be repaired. I just did so after installing iPhoto (and there were a ton then), so maybe that's why.
The documentation says the updater updates Mail, so I looked and Mail's version is 1.3.9, © 2003. Is this the same version as before? Maybe "Resolves a potential data loss issue after renaming a Mail mailbox file" doesn't merit a new version number.
Now to install 10.3.5 on my Power Mac G4.
EDIT: On my PM before updating, Mail is version 1.3.8, ©2003. This means either
1) Apple fixed this last year and was keeping it from us all this time! :)
2) They forgot to update the copyright year.

What was that, 10.2.8? I remember having to re-install 10.2 and upgrade to the prior revision (10.2.7 I believe) - only for Apple to fix it all a day later!
I'm waiting a week, the PNG exploit only causes the viewing application (ie Safari) to crash - unlike Windows.

I installed the update on my main HD and then also on my "utilities" HD, which is bare bones OSX. The main HD updated with the bigger file, and the "utilities" HD updated with the smaller 10.3.5 file. Perhaps which installer (big or small) depends on some pre-existing file that is found on the HD. If missing then default to smaller install file. Waddayathink? :)

Just installed, and it works great. Even better actually... I have a few things in my startup items that need the network. Hadn't we heard that 10.3.5 was going to bring a significant update to the OS in terms of some new features?? It seems like it is no different than any other 10.3.x update -- it just fixes a list of problems that I never knew were broken . . .

Not so great for me. Installed the update, shutdown and then turn it on. I got the usual grey apple with the spinning thing underneath for awhile. Then, the grey apple turned into a grey "do not enter sign". Held the power then rebooted. Same thing. Opened the cd tray with a pin and stared with it open, worked fine... weird.

So what's the deal with iPhoto 2.0.1? Strange to release an ugprade now, no?
The only real change was the addition of AAC support, and the update menu item that 4.0 also received.
It does feed into my evil conspiracy theory that Apple are going to bring out a new product based on the iPod platform -- not necessarily an iPod per se, but a somewhat larger thingy with a color screen that can work with iPhoto and fill in the missing remote control functionality for AirTunes. I think it will be something that an iPod can slide into, one would think that there must be some purpose behind the extra functions in the mini and 4G chipsets.

ahem... what is "uptime", and why is it important?
Uptime means the period in which your computer has been on and has not been rebooted or shut down. It's important to those with some competitive desire to see how long they can keep their computer on, even if it means putting it to sleep, which is usually a bad idea, since more and more problems build up on your machine quicker unless you restart it. It's a pointless and unimportant competition to me.
The only reason I see uptime being seriously important is if your computer is a network or server host.

Uptime is the time (usually days) that your computer has been going without shutting down (usually because of a crash). Now, because I have a powerbook, I usually have a 1-2 day uptime. DARN YOU COMAS   .

My ADB keyboard (you know, the good old classic Apple ones) doesn't seem to work anymore. I have a Blue and White G3, so I dug out the miniature USB keyboard that came with it, and that works fine. By the way, I can start up my computer from the keyboard using the power key, but no other keyboard input works after I get to the login window.
Then again, I got a kernel panic while Software Update was installing 10.3.5, so maybe it didn't complete the install correctly (although I haven't had any other trouble so far). I'm hoping it was during the optimization step. The kernel panic was not because of the install, I was messing around in my computer, don't ask, I know I was being stupid.
Maybe I can use the Combo updater to reinstall 10.3.5 once it comes out, and I'll keep you updated as to whether my problem is fixed.

It's officially available from MS now, even though the server is being slammed. I downloaded and installed yesterday, it's a pretty nice update, but I foresee a ton of Firewall/Security related issues stemming from it, because people not smart enough to protect there PC in the first place, won't have an idea of how to use it once protected. I will say that IE seems a bit faster and the Pop-Up blocker works well, but I still like Firefox better.

Yes, apparently the PNG graphics format had a buffer overflow error that allowed malicious code to be run on ANY system. This must be the fix! YAY
Correction:
The PNG graphics format handling code which is freely available contained a buffer overrun hole. Buffer overrun holes can on some systems be used to run malicious code, or to corrupt other process's memory. I haven't heard that this particular hole posed any threat to OS X's memory structure. Plus, of course, a virus exploiting a fairly uncommon hole and aiming at a fairly uncommon platform (PPC at the least) is not anywhere near the level of peril our Windows-using brethren laugh at in their sleep.

You should be repairing your permissions BEFORE and AFTER you do any kind of OS Update. This is why you probably experienced so many repairs. Not repairing permissions before you apply the update is the reason a lot of people experience trouble after applying the update. Then of course, the idiots blame Apple when it was the users fault!

Well, truly, you shouldn't have to repair permissions manually at all. Most users probably wouldn't think to, or know how to repair permissions. Thus there should be some sort of automatic permission repairing feature.
Or I could be completely wrong. I haven't installed an OS update yet on my brother's iBook.

actually, i run repair permissions after every update, but i got this too (mostly in imovie). but honestly, it seems a bit much to be expected to do this everytime, especially for the casual user.
If apple really wanted it done, you'd think they'd make it officially part of the upgrade process, and have it run automatically.

this might sound kinda loopy, but I've noticed that minimizing to the dock seems MUCH faster now. And also expose seems much smoother with lots of windows open. I wouldn't of noticed, but a friend of mine just bought a rev C 12" PB and was comparing it to my rev B 12". We just putzed around on them to see where his faster processor and more video ram was noticable. And there were noticable differences in video speed (especially in UT2k4). After installing 10.3.5, it seems that everything that has to do with QuartzXtreme and OpenGL is just faster... it's awesome.

I dont have a phone that supports this but over at MobileWhack (http://www.mobilewhack.com/networking/bluetooth/macosx10_3_5_bluetooth_remote.html) they noticed this new little tool in the 10.3.5 update.
"Mac OS 10.3.5 has a number of interesting items in it, but one of the most interesting is the built-in Bluetooth Remote Control functionality. Users of Salling Clicker and other applications have been enjoying the cool factor and useful aspects of having a mobile phone act as a remote control as well as other cool tricks."

Normally Apple runs updates through system update first and then makes a knowledge base document second. Just set the update feature to run periodically and then you should be set for anything you may miss. I visit websites like macnn and macrumors to keep myself informed about the new developments in the Apple universe.

I didn't think you could use an ADB keyboard with Mac OS X. Unless you have the Griffith iMate thingy which converts ADB to USB????
The ADB keyboard works with all Macs that have built-in ADB support in the ROM, which means that if you have the ADB socket on your machine, it will work.
The B&W was the last machine to have both ADB and USB.

No, it is certainly not the user's fault... OS X is supposed to hide the Unix layer from the average user-- they shouldn't even be aware of the concept of "permissions" beyond knowing that there are things they can access and things they can't. Most broken permissions were not changed by the user in the first place. Repair permissions is a cover for a problem that Apple hasn't found an elegant solution for yet.
The installer should have root permissions, so it shouldn't be affected by the state of the permissions before it runs. Having to run repair permissions before installing would indicate a fault at Apple.
If you have repaired permissions before you install and then have to do it again after you install the only thing that could have broken them is the installer and thus is also Apple's fault.
Non-install related misbehavior is usually the fault of other applications. Only folks who play at the terminal can really break permissions in a way I consider to be their fault...

unix runs maintenance scripts in the nighttime, but not all users leave their computers on all the time. this is mostly an issue for laptop users, but some others may very well be affected.
one possible solution would be to add a specialized service that tracks "hours of use" and runs such scripts after the system has been used X hours - this of course would likely confuse user because the maintenance script would almost certainly be run just when the user has more important work to do, thus the user would recognize a severe slowdown wondering what it might be, and possibly rebooting while maintenance script is run. not a good thing.
so far in panther it has been 95% ok just to let os updaters do the prebinding and not worry about the permissions. apple could however add the permission repair script to their os installer, too, if they would see that it will help. in my opinion things are quite well with panther, except that firewire performance in pro audio applications is much worse than in jaguar...

anyone with a 15" powerbook who has already upgraded to 10.3.5 could you check if you can switch resolution to 1280x720 (720p hdtv)? i cannot upgrade yet because digidesign has not yet authorized protools under the 10.3.5 but would like to know if my feature request has been implemented :)
(i have a 1280x720 video projector and it would be so nice if apple supported that resolution natively. currently i have to use switchX but would like to get rid of it, as all system hacks have a potential to make my audio workstation less stable.)

I hate this evil update - it has changed the fan behaviour on my G5 for the worse. On 10.3.4, if the fans needed to spin up, they would spin up and stay up which was fine. Now there is some kind of micromanagement goign on. Up, down, up and down. e.g. I am playing UT2004 and I look at a complicated scene - up come the fans, I look at the ground - the fans spin down. How freakin' annoying...
Also anyone out there with Call of Duty - does the dock and menu stay visible when playing now? Thanks

unix runs maintenance scripts in the nighttime, but not all users leave their computers on all the time. this is mostly an issue for laptop users, but some others may very well be affected.
There's very very little badness that can be caused by not running these scripts. Take a look at the 'daily' 'weekly' and 'monthly' scripts in /etc/. They do little more than rotate your logfiles (archive older logs, and start new ones). At the very best, you'll gain a few hundred KB or a couple of MB of hard disk space by ensuring the scripts are run. They have zero effect on the stability/speed of your Mac. These scripts run when the machine's fully booted. So, it's impossible for them to do anything useful like repair filesystem errors -- that's done by fsck early in the boot process.
one possible solution would be to add a specialized service that tracks "hours of use" and runs such scripts after the system has been used X hours
The scheduler that OS X ships with is 'cron'. There's another scheduler called 'anacron' that does exactly what you're suggesting. For the neat-freaks out there, there's guides around on how to replace X's cron with anacron.

Agreed. I've had Repair Permissions fix a couple of oddities every now and then (well, maybe twice since the feature appeared). Preferably, I'd like both Apple and 3rd parties to be a little more careful with their installers in order to make sure that permissions don't get trampled on in the first place :)

Just a thought, over the last three years (i.e. with Puma, Jaguar and Panther) the point updates (10.x.x) came pretty much every two month (not counting 10.2.7), there are deviations like 10.3.1 (one month) and now 10.3.5 (three months) but the average is pretty much exactly two months.
At this rate we are going to have 10.3.9 next April, which would be just in time to release 10.4 in May or June. But if they have to do something like 10.2.7 or 10.3.1 (which fixed the urgent firewire and FileVault problems) they might run out of numbers. :D
JFreak
Aug 10, 2004, 06:53 AM
they might run out of numbers. :D
no they don't, at least not very likely (as that would require a version number larger than ten-dot-three-dot-2^32). they can have for example panther version 10.3.999999 if they like, but that too is not very likely. you might however have quite a good guess in 10.3.9 being the last panther version, but there's no reason why there couldn't be a 10.3.10 release.
(i think tiger will be around even longer than panther, so we might see a +10 minor version number with that cat.)

You definitely SHOULDN'T have to repair permissions before and after every update. Repairing permissions once in a while should help avoid problems; while updates may change some minor permissions, unless it's an OS update, it's not really going to cause ANY problems for most people.
I repair permissions about once a month or less, and I usually install updates almost as soon as they come out. Even with the original 10.2.8, I've NEVER had update problems...

Its a problem with the Dual Layer format. Dual Layer DVDs (the ones you burn, not commercial ones) are not compatable in todays DVD-R drives. This will eventually be solved in a firmware update.

This already exists - it's part of Unix. There's a daemon called "cron" which watches time (to the second, I think) and can run scripts/commands.
The OS actually uses it to run maintenance scripts if your computer is awake overnight.
I didn't see what your post is referring to ("one possible solution..."), but I'm sure cron can handle it. All you have to do is open up a file (/etc/crontab) with root permissions in a text editor and you can tell to run a script/command every week at this hour, every day at this hour and minute, or whatever else you wish.

Especially is you remember the olden days when the part after the decimal was really treated like a decimal, so release order would be:
10.1
10.2
10.21
10.3
I still get tripped up sometimes when reading version numbers. Of course the newfangled way of calling it 10.2.1 it much easier to understand.

It doesn't work on the Nokia 3650 either. I think the new phones from S-E must have some special software -- it sounds like they have a built in "remote" application. I wonder if its a cross-company standard, or something that's only going to work in MacOS for Sony phones? :(
As for the drop-offs...I have a weird experience too. When I iSync, the phone has to be very close to the computer to work. In contrast, when I use it as a cell modem, it can be sitting several feet away inside a bag.

On top of this cool OS X update, dude, Jonas Salling just released a free version of their remote software (http://homepage.mac.com/jonassalling/Shareware/RemoteBasics/index.html), just for the K700 and S700.
As for iSync, I can't be positive until I get mine in the mail, but I've heard that to initially pair the cell phone and your computer, you actually have to initiate pairing on one, then right after initiate pairing on the other. That may be the most ridiculous thing I've read all day. You sound like a typical Mac Zealot that blames the user because Apple can do no wrong.
If repairing permissions is so critical to a successful install routine, Apple should advise the user to do so, or should incorporate it into the installer itself. Calling someone an "idiot" because they expect a software install to work as advertised without incident is, in itself, idiotic.

I just updated my system without running crons and everything is working just sweet...
Then again, if you leave your system on over night and every night, you need not manually repair permissions and run the crons daily/weekly or monthly tasks. The kernel will automatically do it for you. He's posted it because not everyone leaves their system running over night. I guess most users will put their system to sleep or physically shut it down, dunno know why.
Question: Do you unplug and power-down your fridge freezer on a nightly basis too? Imagine, you can save tones of electric, if you think your Mac is eating a hole in your pocket.
I have and run 4 Mac systems here, they all stay on, every night of everyday of every month. No expense is spent on saving power! The displays are left on, while burning up the liquid crystals and illuminating my whole apartment. They say a TFT will last 5-7 years.... let see...

I have and run 4 Mac systems here, they all stay on, every night of everyday of every month. No expense is spent on saving power! The displays are left on, while burning up the liquid crystals and illuminating my whole apartment. They say a TFT will last 5-7 years.... let see...
:D
Does the pump in your fridge/freezer run all night?
At least pretend like you care about the environment.

Only problem I've had so far is that Finder crashes every second time I drag-n-drop a photo onto Photoshop 7. (ie, first drag-n-drop goes fine, click on next file to drag, and Finder promptly crashes). Folder w/photos is on desktop, and Photoshop is nestled in its folder in Applications.

I don't know if this was posted earlier but the finder version is now 10.3.2. Click about Finder and you will notice it.

Yes. Also, I might add repairing them before updating isn't going to do anything but add work. Your installing the updates with root permissions....even if your just an admin user (it pops up the password box because the update most likely does a sudo su before running).
I also find it funny they even HAVE this as part of the disk util, but I guess I can see why (clueless users playing around with chmod and other UNIX commandline stuff....).

OK...I was updating from 10.3.4. iSynch came up with a green tick, 10.3.5 came up with a exclamation mark, Security update came up with a tick. It got most of the way through optimising and then Software Update unexpectedly quit...
10.3.5 is still in the Software Update when I go into check but the other 2 have gone. Since the Security update was supposed to restart, should I rebuild permissions, restart PB and then download 10.3.5?
I'm just concerned that restarting might screw something up since Software Update didn't seem to complete. Suggestions?

You are naturally right. I would find it simply a bit awkward, having 10.3.1 as well as 10.3.10. I can't remember having seen any software with a version number like this (x.10).
It happens, though - Linux for example (which is firmly a "release early, release often" project) is at 2.4.27 or 2.6.7, depending on which kernel you're running. Granted, for most commercial apps marketing departments get fussy if there's not a new major version released periodically, so the main version number gets bumped more often...

I run a 17" 1.33 pb...installed 10.3.5 update, security update, did disk permissions, (with only issues with iphoto). My fan is more active....? considerably, what gives?
I have the exact same PB as you and I've noticed the same thing. It's not exceedingly so, but the fan kicks on probably twice as often as it did before. Oh well, I could think of worse things that could have happened. At least it won't overheat now for sure. :)

I noticed that my 15" TiBook 1GHz is now driving my 17" CRT (as an extended desktop) without the occasional jump or flicker that was there before. This was a known issue, and the new drivers seem to have fixed the problem. My only complaint was that on my B&W G3, it reset the resolution to 800 x 600. Easily reset, but it would have been considerate to save that setting. NBD

Check it out

Now PowerBook7,1 PowerBook7,2 PowerMac8,1 (new iMac) and PowerMac9,1 (?) all get the SMU_Neo2 specs. Hmm, in 10.3.4 just the PowerMac8,1 had that spec.
Looks like we get a PowerTune G5 system for PowerBooks, iMacs and a new PowerMac, from what I can tell.

It's probably not a bug; Apple did a similar thing in 10.3.2 for certain 12 inchers. Sometimes they reevaluate how hot they want to allow PowerBooks/iBooks to be; if they lower the setting for how hot the 'Book can be before fans come on, the fans come on more often after installing the latest OS update.
Don't worry about - it's for your PB's good. If it really bothers you, you can find the file that controls the fan's behavior from 10.3.4 and replace 10.3.5's. Someone else will have to help you with the exact file name/location, though, as I don't know.

Oh, it doesn't really bother me, it's not like it's constantly running or anything. I was just answering the earlier post to concur that he wasn't the only one that was happening to. I can certainly live with a little extra fan activity if it means the PowerBook doesn't run too hot. :)

Did the usual repair, etc., etc.
Installed.
Safari crashing frequently...
This is why I use my work machine as the guinea pig. :D

MacPhreak, CubaTBird-
Yes, I have that problem with the finder... it will quit when you have a finder window open with "image preview" turned on for the icons. This is the same problem that they had in 10.3.2 (which was fixed in 10.3.3) and now is back. I checked the finder version and it coincidentally is 10.3.2 like you said... weird... why did the finder actually downgrade itself to a way back version? I wonder how many others are having this problem, because it's not so apparent at first until it actually quits on you... and yes there is this weird "TV scrambling" look on the screen for a split second when you occassionally wake from sleep.
