Syncing with Powermat

I have a Powermat and the accompanying case for my iPhone. Since I began using the case, I have had lots of trouble syncing my iPhone with iTunes. Sometimes iTunes never even recognizes the iPhone, other times I get an error before a sync begins, and sometimes the sync starts but never finishes. Occasionally a sync will complete, but even then the iPhone will eventually disappear from the devices list in iTunes.

Anyone else with a Powermat have this issue?

Do you remove the case before the sync? If not, perhaps the conductive properties of the case are interfering? Just a guess because I don't have Powermat but have looked at them in store.
