Incredible compress app

Hey everyone!

Is there any folder compressing software that would compress a 25mb folder into a something like 5-10mb .zip archive? It's very important. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried OS-X's built-in compression s/w? Select the folder, then Finder > File > Compress "<foldername>" (or right click and select Compress). It will create a .zip file of the selected folder.

The amount of compression is very dependent upon the source files. If they are already compressed, such as video, JPG stills, or compressed audio (MP3/AAC), there won't be much compression.

Yeah, and it's not very helpful. It compressed a 25.2 folder into a 25.1 archive. I need something more... compressful.

How about instead of trying to make a ZIP, try making a 7ZIP archive? Here is the app that can do that: http://sixtyfive.xmghosting.com/products/7zx/ Make sure you select the most intensive compression level.

On final word of advice, if the files you are working with are video or audio file, well then no archive format will make them smaller. That's because they are already compressed (audio/video formats try to make the video as small as possible).

all compressing will do , but any file you can only compress up to the point where the actual file gets damaged and compressing a file to less then half its size will certainly damage the file


i dont compress files at all (divx /avi are compressed file formats so no need to compress them further )
1 tb external drives are that cheap now it does not make sense to compress and lose quality
and for sending large files email is anyway not suitable , there are faster and better ways

You are probably trying to send a file to someone, I assume?

Also depends on what you're trying to compress.

Compressed pictures such as png, jpg, etc are already compressed, and you won't save more than 5% by stuffing them in a zip. Same goes for any video.

Plain text (.txt) files will compress like crazy, in the order of 90%+. Everything else falls in the middle.

It has a strong compression engine, you also have the ability to add passwords and split the archives into smaller packages.

iArchiver is a nifty little app, and it supports loads of different compression types so you can have a fiddle around with them.
