What do you use to create GIF or .php pics?

I don't know how to create thos avatar that some peole have with moving images. I am interested in making one, but don't know what program to use. I would prefer it if it was free, but if there is a better, easy to use program out there that does more, I wouldn't mind looking into that either.

I'd thought that you had to use Photoshop CS' ImageReady or something else expensive. Apparently, though - found this while searching for a link for you - you can do it in the relatively inexpensive PS Elements 2.0.

I just verified this using the tutorial in the copy of PSE2.0 I've had for a few years. It works fine - at least using the demo file! PSE2.0 runs about $80.

When i used to make gifs on my windows machine i used "Gif Construction Set" i think, it was freeware and i'm sure theres something similar for mac.
But yes as jsw said i use ImageReady when i have to make a gif on my mac. how about looking on Mac Update (http://www.macupdate.com/) or somewhere like that. Sorry I can't be more help.

Last I checked, there were 2 or 3 freeware animated gif editors.
