my 21.5 has just now for the second time emitted a long, steady 4 second beep. This bothers me. What could this be here?

I think so too. there is nothing obstructing the exhaust, but it sure does get hot. maybe if introduce some free cooling from the outdoor air I might be in good business. any other ideas?

if you dont have it placed direct over a heater or a blanket over it then it should not overheat
my iMac g3 slot loader without fans at all is placed just a half meter away from the radiator and does not overheat after days of constant running
so i guess ther is something wrong on your new iMac if its overheating after only 7 hours
and if its not the heat it should not beep as a beep always means something is failing (ram?)

HD: Macintosh HD 50c
CPU A 43c
GPU diode 77c
GPU heatsink 74c
Ambient 18c
Memory Controller 62c
Northbridge 61c
looks a little high... here are my fans at the moment..
Optical Drive 999rpm
Hard Drive 1098rpm
CPU Fan 1200rpm

I just installed smcFanControl. it seems to be cooling everything off by quite a bit. I set all three fans to 2000rpm, is this acceptable as default? when my ambient room temp is 56F, it's hard to believe how high the temps inside climb.

Sounds like a bad apple (pun intended).
Yes, the fan settings are fine.. Do realize that they are stuck at what you set them at, and that you're stuck with whatever noise they produce. Use it as a temporary fix. Send it back to Apple when we start confirming a good batch of computers.
