Emails disappeared into the ether

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue with emails that have disappeared. The emails are from March 2007 to May 2009, but the problem was put to my attention a few months ago. This happened sometime after a webhost switch back in May 2009. We managed to back up Mail, Mail Downloads and Preferences folders before the switchover. Unfortunately, I don't know how to progress from there (complete noob 🙁). Is there a painless way to restore the emails from the backup?
