Using iTunes, iPhoto on an external drive

I have an iMac that is rapidly filling up. I would like to move my iTunes and iPhoto library to my external harddrive (I currently use for Time Machine). Is this possible or even adviseable? If I were to do this, what would I need to do. Is it as simple as moving the folders that hold these files on to the external. Would the programs find them.

The only comment I will add is to take note of this part:

If you move your library to an external drive, you'll need to power up and connect the drive before starting iTunes. If you don't, iTunes will prompt you to either locate the library or to create a new library (which will result in an empty library).

If you let your iMac enter sleep mode with iTunes active there will be times where it will reset the location to the default folder. I expect this is simply a timing issue caused by the delay re-connecting to the network and iTunes looking for it's library. Simply go back in and reset it to point to the external location.

I have moved my itunes to a different location but when I now open Itunes, all my songs cant be found. I need to locate them all. I made sure the external drive is powered before starting up Itunes (its on 24 hours). Also whats the fastest way to locate? Seems like i need to locate each song individually? Is there a faster way?
