HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Just got back from a super NYE celebration in Ljubljana. All the best to the folks here on MR. Looking forward to another year of great photos in the daily thread!
I have been admiring your images for some time now. I also absolutely love your web site.
What new camera did you get? And I'm also stuck deciding what to do about my photos. Right now I have half of them in Aperture and half in Lightroom. Not really sure which way to go.
Almost missed this message! Thanks for putting a big smile on my face. :) My new camera is a Canon 7D, now supported by Aperture. I'm back to limping along with Aperture. I've decided to wait for version 3 and make my decision then.

I can't believe it's finally 2010. I remember almost seven years ago when the Olympics were announced to be in Vancouver for 2010. I thought, "wow, I'll be almost twenty!". It seemed like a life time away, and now it's here.
2010 should be a great year for me, I expect radical changes in my life. Starting with the Olympics in February, which will be a once in a life time event for this City. Also I'll be ramping up my university studies, taking more courses and getting further into my degree. In the summer, we all get to watch the biggest sporting event in the world take place in South Africa as they welcome the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Without those people, I'd flip right past that image if I saw it in a book. As it is, it would stop me in my tracks and cause me to closely look at it.

Haven't posted in this thread in months so here goes. My camera won't be here till end of this month (Canon 7D) so I've been mooching off my friends and school equipment. I started doing some video stuff with this central theme of child memories or events. That turned into places and things you loved as a child. I made this video (http://www.vimeo.com/8450347) which was also for class project and I've taken several images that I will be sharing with you guys. This is the first of them.

I met a guy a few weeks ago who, having lost his job, was walking the length of Britain (Lands End to John O’Groats, that’s 850 to 1,200 miles, depending on the route). I met him when he was about halfway, sitting by his tent, cooking his supper. Nearby, asleep, was his dog. Now there must have been a day, a month earlier, when the guy whistled his dog and said “Walkies”. But instead of a quick stroll around the park, and back home to doze by the fire, man and dog had been walking ever since. The guy knew what he was doing, but I’m not sure what the dog was thinking, if anything at all. Maybe just “Let me sleep”. I bet he would have appreciated some rubber ‘walking boots' like these...

I'm going to guess it's because most "people shots" involve subjects with whom the photographer is acquainted, so these photos are kept off of the internet in the interest of privacy.

So true. I takes lots of pictures of our children. Some are even worth posting in this thread. However I don't want to post their (or other people's ) image on the web. Privacy reasons, or loss of control over the image.

An interesting thought, but not one I see borne out over at fredmiranda. The "post your best Nikon shots" thread over at the Nikon forum is filled with people pictures, including a lot of family ones. I'd say the people to "other" ratio there is flipped compared to what it is here.

Well, I believe that Nikon forum is rather closed (only members can view it), so it's a bit more "safe" there. I can at least speak for myself about this forum: I have a number of portraits that I count among my better pictures, but I would never post them here.

Thanks, H20Hockey. I went through a similar thought process and decided I like the photo with the blurry people and not as a crop. I'll share my reasoning: I like how the holiday decorations and people provide a context for the bottle rocket. However, if the people were also in sharp focus, they would compete with the tiny little bottle rocket. As it is, they are "present" without being concrete enough to be subjects. I particularly like the couple at the right who are obviously watching the rocket go off, since they help direct attention to it. I shot a bunch of photos while this guy was setting off his bottle rockets, and this one (with that couple in it) works the best, I think.

I've really only poked around fredmiranda's buy/sell forum, but from another perspective the Nikonians galleries are pretty well dominated by landscapes, second is wildlife then macro. You would have to put 4 or more of the people type galleries together to get to the same number of photos posted in the landscape section. Also the "picture I took" thread, that is private, must be a paid memeber to view, is likewise dominated by landscape or travel type photos.
Or it could be that everyone here is inspired by Doylem.

I agree with your logic. The sharpness on the banners/lamps freezes the frame and everything else seems to move as it is intended to. This is like your "20 Minutes at the Temple" series of shots you did a while back. The temple was crisp and clear while the fuzzy people put it in the modern context that it lives in.

Great shot- I love the texture and atmosphere!

C&C is always welcome. Cheers.
Did you try to white balance it? I think that'd make for a better image.

This was the last photo I took out of my smoke photography session. The last one turned out the best! Played around with it in Photoshop CS2.
Very nice- what did you use as a source?
Sunlight was muted with a heavy snowfall. -27C with wind chill. Heavy slush on the Lake. Keebler... you know what I mean eh ? Pano from 3 handheld shots.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4042/4241091530_0dbde6a25b_o.jpg
The muted light works so well, and the sharpness of the trees on the right balances it out nicely.

I have the same one with colors, I cant dice which one works better (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2792/4238705863_e803873918_o.jpg).
I think I also prefer the B&W. Nice shot!

Really elegant. I love the purple. Nice one!
Thanks guys! Really appreciate it!
I dumped this into PS and inverted your invert. I like the green on black a bit better, but either way this is unreal. May I add this to my desktop collection?
Oh, did the shoot set off the smoke alarms?
Dale
Yes you can most certainly can! I'd be honored :)
No I don't think the incense is strong enough to set the smoke alarm off. I was doing it all in my room anyways. No smoke alarm in there hah.
I have a few more smoke shots that I'm playing around with in Photoshop. I'll post those up later tomorrow! One by one :P
Thanks again guys!

Super. That has to be a bottle rocket. They are so illegal here in the States...
Dale
And for good reason! These things are legal here on holidays, and they're readily available for purchase at a variety of stores. Therefore, they are ubiquitous on NYE, turning the whole of the country into a multicolored war zone. There were many hundreds of bottle rockets going up, down, and sideways in the city center that night. I felt the need to duck on numerous occasions, although nothing ever really came close enough to make ducking truly necessary. Remarkably, the news report the next day mentioned only one injury, to a guy who had lit one and then leaned over it to see why it hadn't yet gone off...BAD idea!
Dale
Thanks, Dale. You seem to have identified my MO. :D

Typical Canadian Shield lake. Surrounded with black spruce and jack pine. 12 cm of ice 6 cm of water on top of that and 15 cm of snow on top of that. Not good... but fun none the less.

<bottle rocket chat>
The last time I saw a bottle rocket up close, it was flying parallel to the ground about one foot off the pavement...
I pulled up your previous shot and looked at them side by side. For shots of the same subject with the same camera and lens, they are quite different. Your November shot is softer in feel with more natural brown and green tones. The January version has better detail in the mountain peak (love those clouds!) but the saturation seems a bit on the high side, making the soil and grass of the field too strong for me. The blown-out light in the village is distracting for me.
Interesting to note the impact of time. Your November shot is titled "Morning" and the new one is "Dusk". "Golden Hour" really does warm a shot up. The older one was ISO 100 at 1/80 sec. while the new one is ISO 200 at 10 full seconds. F stop is the same, so the light at dusk in January must have been less intense than the photo reveals.
I like all of your photos, and both of these please me. I'm not being critical, just exploring the differences.

Hi Dale. Thanks for your thoughts. Always happy to share mine too:
I usually opt for ISO 100, but I had to keep my shutter speed at around 10 seconds in order to get the car lights to register in the foreground (any longer and they were too thin or even invisible). I didn't want to open up wider than f/11 (which would sacrifice some depth of field), so I increased the ISO a bit.
The saturation you're seeing is mostly due to artificial lighting. The church is illuminated at dusk (as are most Slovenian churches), so it really pops out from its environment, and capturing that effect was my goal in taking this picture (I waited 45 minutes in the freezing cold for those lights to turn on at long last). The grass is illuminated by the ambient light from the headlights of cars, making the grass seem very green; I chose to leave it that way. So I don't think the colors you're seeing are necessarily related to the season; I think they're more due to the affects of artificial lighting at dusk.
As for the light in the village: I think you mean the small, bright one to the left of the church. Luminous objects in night shots pretty much have to be "blown out," as you called it. There is no detail to retain in a light at night, so if you try to expose for it, you'll underexpose everything else. The best you can do is try to get sparkles/rays coming off of it (best achieved with smaller apertures). I rather like the twinkling little light, but since you find it distracting, I'm curious to know what you would would rather see there.
Again, thanks for your comments. It's always interesting to hear what people think of my photos, positive or negative.

I mistook the car lights for railings...:o... Now I understand all of your settings. On second look in a darkened room the village light doesn't bother me any more. It just stood out at first view. The effect of all the artificial lighting is is interesting to note. Slovenia is truly beautiful.

Your photos should come with warnings to breathe deeply before viewing. They are breathless.
I can't tell you how much I like this shot, but I will try anyway.
The image is perfectly plum and level. The flag pole on the top of the building is dead vertical and the window is level. Do you use a hot-shoe level or just the one on your tripod?
Most folks would botch a shot like this, but your patience has led to just the right light on the branches to balance the misty waters to the left of the walkway. The right portion doesn't look busy or badly cropped to me due to the light and detail. The clarity of the sheen of moisture on the stones run my eye right out into the mist of the lake. Wonderful.

I don't think your shot lost anything for not "framing properly". I'm trying to visualise what it would look like if you were zoomed out a bit and I think your picture is better the way it is. It's a cute picture and the fact that his face dominates it and fills the frame adds to it.
For long lengh portraits, yes, you don't crop the head, for close ups, it doesn't matter so much.

I just walked in the door from a white out at 11,000 feet….Sorry for the iPhone photo...
"The story is about a rough around the edges community of ski bums and Mtn. folk who live in teepees and ratty cabins with wood burning stoves above the place of billionaires in a ski town. In the Winter, they have to use snowmobiles to get to their homes. In some cases, they ride the ski hill gondola with groceries and ski down into their little hidden part of paradise."
I decided that I wanted to get a good shot at seeing these folk as they get home, so I opted for the late shift today. Up the gondola I went a little after 2 PM, snow swirling in patches of blue. After wolfing down a sandwich, I topped out and turned on my devices consisting of an avalanche beacon & Spot-II GPS transmitter, the map GPS would stay off…
After dropping into the basin a thousand feet and just over a mile in, there were the "Cabins". From a shanty made out of beer cans and tires to a 999 square foot enclave ( 1,000 foot limit ) made out of special Finnish wood costing bank. The weather got burly, just what I was hoping for, moody as hell with Ilford 400 and 3200 in a Hasselblad.
Then it got darker, my tripod came out, headlamp on, tunes on….I was alone in spicy avi conditions and no one in sight. In the thick of the woods some 2,000 feet down from where I started, a light hit the corner in the dark trench of spruce. It was a suburban with the most amazing set of tank-like tracks I has ever seen. I introduced my self, said I was on assignment and needed to meet the folks up here. They obliged me a ride back up 1,200 feet to their cabin where I shot contextual photos of their posh digs and then departed in the darkness for the next pad...
This one was the tire / can affair buried in snow with a single candle lit. After my second knock on the door and an introduction, a voice said, "You sure are early". He thought it was morning, it was 6:30 PM. After two hours of great low light photography and conversation, I headed out into the wild...
Now it was scary, visibility was low, snow was blowing in from the 10 PM position across the snowmobile tracks. I knew I had to haul, drop my light low, keep my iPhone at the ready to swap out batteries if needed. After trudging back up to 11,212 feet at the top of the road, I saw wonderful festoons of snowy light streaking through the trees, I knew I was safe, inbounds...
But I saw great images of the back of the gondola building that needed my lens's attention. So another hour went by in making images in a side ways white out. After awhile, I saw the headlamp of a snowmobile turn and hit the lodge. I knew this was my chance to avoid a walk of 3,200 vertical feet and nearly 5 miles in a strong conditions. So I followed the tracks to the lower part of the lodge and found an Australian man who lived below the lodge as a caretaker. He let me in and we sat and chatted it up over a few brews for a spell, good fun. But at 11PM, it was time to hit it, he was giving me a ride down the steep World Cup course in that crazy weather. After seeing the strap safely secure my gear in a basket, I hop on. Seeing as this is not the usual big touring sled for the ski company, I have the option of either holding onto the rear of the basket in an awkward rearward reach or around the waist of the pilot. I opt for the latter which would prove to be *very* wise.
The course was freshly groomed with about 4 inches of packed pow. We hit speeds of 45-50 in the snowstorm and I am glad I have my amber Oakleys on can keep on the terrain ahead. But then it gets insane, we are juicing it in perfect leans in off camber and then it opens up into a gulch that has seen ski racers hit 90+, straight down in a perfect 1/4 pipe for over 1,500 vertical feet…SICK!!!
We are in perfect sync on leans, the speed is unfathomable. Once we hit bottom, my sled jockey tells me we hit 85 in the gulch…..WTF!
I just walked from this, 10 rolls of film to soup tomorrow, I think the editors will be very happy, I know I am….
Wow!

I'll share one secondary for now, the article has to publish first, a month out. Yeah, what a crazy night for sure...the magazine loves it though, wants to add a page or two onto the spread...

I have a D300s and the 35mm 1.8 lens im researching to see if I will need the 1.4 or not.
I have a little app called EXIF Viewer that lets me see the camera data on photos from the forums. FX120 has a Canon and the lens is a 1.4

Hi. Maybe I should be a mod or something. Please keep it to one per day. Photo (singular) of the Day.
The first one has potential, but either you processing lab or scanner has tossed the colors off. I don't know if iPhoto will edit colors, but PhotoShop Elements will and it is not that expensive.

I use Firefox and there is a very handy plugin (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3905) that can show exif info of any photo on a web page (if that photo has the exif info intact).

I took all of these photos pre-show, so I was able to get up close and work with the only lens I had with me that day (a 50 f/1.4).
Concerts are some of the toughest things to shoot, lens selection really depends on the venue and the level of access you have to the stage.
My advice is to lock exposure for a series of shots, meter using spot, AF using the center point, recompose and try to time your shots to when the lighting is the most similar in apparent intensity to when you locked your exposure. I typically will max out my sensitivity and underexpose to keep the shutter speeds high while also staying at f/2.8 or narrower to get a wider DOF.

Saw this in the Nikon 35 pool on Flickr yesterday! (my name is Dude With Camera if you want to add each other as a contact) DOF is a little shallow for the shot IMO but I know that's what you were going for. I still like the shot though.
Nothing special here but it was my bday yesterday and I received the 35 f/1.8 as my present so I'm pretty pumped. This was one of the first shots I took with it, some cake and Irish coffee :)

Oh My God. No joke, you look almost identical to my dad. He even had a similar jacket, wears glasses and has a grey beard. That's scary.
Great shot btw!
Erm, I didn't want to be the one to tell you. Maybe this is something you should talk to your mum about... ;)
Wonderful.
Thanks, Dale. Much appreciated (though, in these digital days, getting things level doesn't seem much of a chore)...
The UK continues to shiver. Windermere froze over in the winter of 1962/3. It wouldn't surprise me if it happened this winter too...

Shot in manual to make sure all shots were the same exposure, depth of field etc then auto aligned and auto blended together in photoshop... bit of manual tweaking to fix photoshop's mistakes et voila.

Yeah, it probably was too shallow. I had gone out that day with a friend to shoot in this field, and the entire thing turned out to be pretty unsuccessful. The field where we were going to shoot at had been cut down, and that location was actually private property, but we had no idea. You were literally in private property once you crossed this 6 foot bridge (where we were) and completely safe on the other side, and we saw no private property signs up. So I didn't get the shots I was hoping to get, and I'm stuck trying to salvage some in photoshop. Ah, oh well.

You're new. It's not "bad" and I don't mean to be condescending in any way. Really. When I first started posting my work, I was very sensitive to comments. I lived.
POTD does have rules, but they aren't posted month to month. This it a user maintained thread, so it's left to folks like me to remind those who haven't gone waaaaaay back. This thread was founded in November, 2007 and that was the last time the rules were posted.
If we police ourselves, we don't need cumbersome "Welcome to POTD Please blah blah blah...." Taking up the first page of each month.

I use a stand alone app called EXIF Viewer that I keep in my Dock. It usually works just by dragging the image from the POTD page, but sometimes I find that I have to download the photo to my desktop first.

Just want to back up what Dale said here. Every now and then somebody, in their exuberance at having found this terrific thread, will post a whole slew of photos all at once. (I didn't see how many it was this time, but I've seen posts with as many as a dozen photos included.) And then somebody else will come along and politely encourage that person to remove all but one. I'm always grateful when someone steps up to wag a finger; it helps keep the thread under control. So thank you Dale for being that person this time. And thank you biomorph for taking the time to share your work in the daily thread--the more the merrier, but one photo at a time! :)

It is kinda a work in progress aesthetic. I agree with both of you. I love the intensity of colour in the shot like you say Jason Beck. In regards to your comment Doylem, I find frustrating that it is so cluttered the image and the degradation making it HDR isn't satisfactory. Thanks for your comments guys.

And here would be the main reason I have gone back to film, when people see my images, I want them to know it is real...
I believe in the freedom to create, but there are SO many brilliant moments in life that culminate in a far higher level of art than any computer can generate...I think it is quite sad that so many people take what is a photograph and turn it into gaudy graphic art.

I'm no fan of the gaudy graphic art effects either, but I stop short of claiming that any photograph captures reality. They're all interpretations to some extent, even with film. Various types of film and dark room techniques leave lots of room for creative control, just like making adjustments while processing raw files. And the decision-making starts well before you even get to the processing stage; a single subject can be approached many different ways at the moment of capture.
So that's my counter-rant, I guess. ;)

Taking pictures of the racing cockpit I am making. Flipped/reserve mounted the G25 pedals and decided to take a break and snap some photos. To be honest I don't know what to think of it but I just like the darkness to it. Looks neat.

Thank you! I've been doing a lot of editing with my iPhone even on pictures I take with my D90, much easier than Photoshop, ha. Does anyone know if I'm destroying the photo resolution doing this? Apps I use for edits claim they save at original resolution, but I'm not sure if there is more to it or not.

Shot this of my street at night. the yellow glow in the back are the city lights reflecting on snow clouds hanging VERY low.
now f someone can teach me how to get distortion out of the image or how to use the lens distortion tool properly in Photoshop. I cannot get it right...

I kinda keep coming back to this one and thought I might add a comment.
The rule of thirds is sometimes not just about composition of the placement of objects within the frame but for a shot like this focus. I'm not really a huge fan of shots like this, however I think this one would have much more appeal if the plane of focus were down around either the N or M key, maybe in between so both were clear/sharp. I think the f/stop on this is good, It would be a bit distracting to have a super sharp line and very blurry numbers, so your DOF is good in my opinion. The plane of focus as it is just cuts the photo in half, I think it would be better to have it "closer to the viewer" or in this shot toward the bottom of the frame.
Maybe try it out and let me know if I'm on or off base?

Kinda sad. Someone's nailed wooden batterns to the wall, to make them look like shutters...
I've been staying at this wonderful little circular building, called Beamsley Hospital: actually almshouses for poor widows, built in the 16th century. To get to each tiny room, they had to go through the central chapel. It was fun to try and get some pictures of the building at night, with the snow on the ground and the light coming through the windows. A magical place...

I think there may have been a circular polarizer on the lens, but that's it. Otherwise it's just PP in Lightroom.

Well, thanks, Dale. Yes, I've photographed plenty of Greek goddesses.
No, that's a single, 30-second exposure, not two combined or anything tricky like that. There were a lot of people walking around wearing these blinky headgear things, and I just waited for one of them to cross the bridge. Perhaps the other date is when I did the raw conversion?
Yeah, that 100mm is a lot of fun. I've been using it a lot lately, and come springtime, I'll be using it even more. No flower will be safe. ;)

Nice light, and soft, soothing colors. I kind of wish the point of resolution didn't end up in the far corner, but I like that we don't see where the tracks ultimately lead.

Ah, I think that one works even better.
I'm amazed how sharp this is for a long exposure.
Me too. I was doing a lot of them around that time, some as long as 30 seconds, and they all came out as sharp as I could want them to be, even at 100%. I used a remote release, mirror lock-up, and a fairly sturdy tripod, but I was still surprised that nothing wiggled during the exposures. I think it really helped that there was almost no wind on any of those occasions.
