MessagePad 2100 versus 2000

The only difference between the 2100 and 2000 is an extra 4MB of DRAM and a slightly different logo and some text on the front of the case. They both have the same amount of ROM flash RAM and 162MHz Processor. Basically there really isn't much difference. Lots of 2000's have been upgraded to 2100's. Typically the 2000 is going to be cheaper when purchased used. Either way, you're going to be fine. You can't really lose with a 2000, I get along just fine using mine.

The MP2100 is actually the newer version.

Main difference is the heap (RAM) memory. MP2100 has 4MB and the MP2000 has 1MB if memory serves.

Suggest getting a MP2100 if possible as the extra memory comes in handy if you surf the web, play music, and other memory intensive type apps.

In fact, there are some web sites that are run on a Newton 2100.

Note the MP2000 can be upgraded to a MP2100.

Pretty much says it all. The cost effectiveness of upgrading a MP2000 might not pan out vs just buying a MP2100 now...Newtons have depreciated quite a bit in the last few years.

Well, one of the main issues is that the Newton Internet Enabler 2.0 chews up quite a bit of space in the device. You might be able to get away with installing only the essential packages in the ram but that's about it. You can install packages and run programs from a pcmcia flash card, but that's an additional purchase that you would need to make. There's no ATA support on the Newton either, so it would need to be an SRAM or Linear Flash card. I know kallisys.com has an ATA driver but I'm not sure if it's freeware or not.

Personally though, I'd make sure to go with a 2100 or a 2000 with the ram upgrade, which is what I have. I really don't use it much anymore except for one time that I used it to take notes on during a university class on iPhone development.
