I've had my Macbook about a year and half now, and made sure to purchase AppleCare to help make sure it would last at least three years. About 6 months from when I got it I realized that the plastic on the keyboard top was lifting up, there was a visible gap. Sometimes it would be quite noticeable, other times it would flatten out more. I took it to the Apple Store but at the time, the lift was not significant enough for them to do anything about, but the guy that helped me promised to make a note of it so if it got more serious or something else happened they would know I had come in already.

Now a few months ago I cracked my LCD, it got hit with a football someone was tossing around my room. I ordered an LCD from eBay and put it in myself. In that process we did scratch up the back of the MacBook, so it's easy to see something went on there.

Then just the past few days I saw a crack where the plastic had been coming up, today, I opened it up, and part of the plastic was just missing. There is a bit of the inside exposed, you can't just really see inside, but it is exposed. Now if I go to the Genius Bar, what are they gonna say? Does replacing the LCD void the entire warranty, even for something unrelated? Should I let them know straight up that I replaced the LCD or hope they don't find it, I think they would right?

If anyone has any experience with a similar situation I'd really appreciate the advice!

While an Apple Store employee might view it as sketchy that you installed an LCD yourself (and I wouldn't recommend it), the terms and conditions of your warranty are specific in that it does not void the warranty. However, if you damaged the computer while installing the LCD, the warranty does not cover the damage you caused. Anyway, I might not mention it—it might lead to a long, boring conversation.

Does the crack on your MacBook look like this?

If so, it's a very straightforward issue. You didn't cause this during your repair, and Apple should fix it quickly. If it's something else, can you take a picture, or perhaps describe it a bit more in detail?

Yeah the LCD replacement was not something I would recomend to anyone else, getting it replaced by anyone else was to expensive at the time though. Luckily my Dad helped me out, he's helped design boards for both Intel and IBM, he can take almost anything electronic and put it back together pretty well. It was just getting some of that plastic back into place where we scratched the hell out of the hinge.

But that crack looks exactly like the one on my MacBook right now, so I guess its clear this is an issue they have. I knew a lot of people have had problems, but I'm surprised that it looks exactly the same. I'll try to get it down to the Apple Store as soon as I can and get it taken care off.

Just take it to the store and dont say anything about the screen repair. That is a known issue.

Hi,

I just have a quick question regarding cracked keyboard like these one. Warranty is out of date now, for more than 1 years. I just purchase an imac 27" with 3 year apple care, if I go to genius bar, will they fix it for me for free?
Some say yes, some say no.

it's a known *defect* inherent to the white plastic Macbook line (not sure about the black ones?), and even out of warranty, Apple repairs it.

In fact just a few months ago, was already a few months out of warranty and Apple repaired it without hesitation. Soon as the genius saw the cracks he had half the form filled already to have my Macbook serviced.

I've had some issues even getting my MacBook seen at my local store. The appointments are backed up by 4-5 days, my work schedule comes out Saturday, for the week starting the next day Sunday, so I couldn't make an appointment for a little bit.
This isn't there fault so I didn't hold it against them. But then somehow my appointment got lost in the system and didn't exist and they refused to accommodate me. I talked to a manager and all he told me was sorry, only 1/4 genius' we have are qualified to work on Macs so he's overloaded.
Woah, what, why do you have so many people devoted to iPods and iPhones but not your core product! Then I asked if he could squeeze me in sooner than next week, he said no not gonna happen. I could travel 30-60 minutes and try another store or take it to a a third party certified apple specialist. I was stunned that he suggest I go elsewhere, would you say that to someone making a purchase?
It's really weird, cuz I've had a lot of experience with the genius bar(I seem to kill anything electronic). And they have squeezed me in before, I've seen them squeeze other people in, they have almost always been willing to accommodate people, but now they can't. My experience with the genius bar and my iPod Mini years ago was so good that it lead me to purchase both an iMac and a MacBook, if I had had this service I wouldn't have been drawn to Apple as strongly.
