so... does anyone here listen to metal? And don't come in with Korn, LP, slipknot or nu-metal, i'm talking about death, black, thrash or prog metal along the lines of Slayer, Carnal Forge, Cryptopsy, Sepultura, Borknagar, Decapitated, Opeth, Dream Theater or the like.

Linkin Park is Pop.
It is popular, therefore it is pop, although it is called metal by ignorant teeny boppers and other people not exposed to superiour music.
If you don't want to call it pop then call it rock.

I listen to a little Otep, don't know if you consider that 'heavy' or 'death' metal though.

I'm more a fan of Power Metal or Symphonic Metal than thrash or death.
To name part of my music collection:
I like early DT (Images & Words, Awake), Blind Guardian, Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, Stratavarious<sp?>, Iron Maiden, Helloween, Pantera (not a really a fan of Damage Plan or SJR though), MegaDeth, Metallica, Hammerfall, In Flames, Nevermore, etc.,.
I've heard some Children of Bodom<sp?> but I don't own anything by them.

Ive been listening a little to Dimmu Borgir lately, but his screeching voice just isnt something for me. I prefer Opeths deep growls.
So yeah, i like opeth.

I'm down with Slayer and Death, and some of the ones you're talking about, but my favorite sub-genre is indie-metal/math rock/stoner metal.
bands like The ****ing Champs, Spaceboy, the first Cave In album.
If you haven't heard The ****ing Champs first album, "III", you HAVE to check it out, it's brilliant. Like 80 minutes of mostly instrumental dueling guitars. (their name at the time of release was just The Champs, spelled C4AM95, but they changed it because of the original Champs band from the 50s.)

Kovenant is alright... Nightwish is passable every once in a while - although it's hard to see a bunch of "goth" kiddies these days without a NW hoodie. I've seen Megadeth, they were pretty good, and Fear Factory kicked ass - although I'm betting you put those guys in the pop category, too.
Wanted to see Slayer, but *meh*. Too many big fat hairy men.

Ahh the good old days...
I used to listen to Medadeth, Metallica (everything up to and reluctantly including the black album), and Pantera.
What about the classics? I'm still listening to Black Sabbath, everything they did with Ozzy is fantastic.
Now, about the only thing I listen to that still qualifies as metal would be the Melvins. Their dirge-style stuff is great, and I think "The Vermin Seed" on Hostile Ambient Takeover is one of my absolute favourite tracks.

I've got to be in the mood to listen to metal. If I listen to it at the wrong time, it becomes boring and redundant.
Also, it's easy for me to burn out in the middle of a 'metal' album. I don't headbang or dance, but I feel like I 'absorb' the music, and create some sort of a voluntary adrenaline rush. If I don't do this in moderation, I'll run out of gas before the thing whole thing ends.
As for namedropping, Motörhead (http://www.imotorhead.com) and Turbonegro (http://www.turbojugendusa.com) usually satisfy when I'm in the mood for 'metal.'
