I have just installed a 2nd Optical drive in my MP
I have a 2 X 2.8 Quad Core Intel Xeon model and have attempted to add a Samsung 22X Pata Internal DVDRW
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Samsung/SHS222NBLS/
It is not showing in profiler and it doesnt show on the eject icon.
When my mac pro powers up the drive lights up but doesnt register.
I took the front bezel off but do i need to do anything else ?
Thanks

I think the drive is faulty. I reinstalled it and noticed 2 of the prongs on the pata were a little bent. I tried straightening and now the mac pro wont fully boot. Just goes into blue screen.
I took the drive out and boots fine.
I think the drive needs to be replaced.

The only thing I can think of is double checking all connections. Not that I'm saying that you haven't. Maybe something came loose.

Have you tried holding down the option key during boot?
Then you should be able to choose your start up disk and see if works.

Thanks guys, i tried but to no avail.
I am pretty certain the connectors are damaged. Its difficult to see exactly but a couple of the prongs seem bent.
I will send it back and get another.

Are you running retail OS X? I had this issue on the builds before SL went retail, no issues once it went retail though.

I am running 10.5.8 . So i dont think that is the problem. It is the full retail version. Good idea though, it might help others.

PROBLEM SOLVED
I had to switch the 2nd drive to be a slave .
Its difficult to see on the back but basically there is a tiny cover over one of three prongs. It needs to be moved to the slave position (written on top of drive not on the back).
In addition I bent the damaged prong into correct position.
Works fine now.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
