Help: Bought not so new iPod and can't restore it

I bought an 80gb iPod Classic from someone and when I hook it up to my Mac (tried on PC as well) it doesn't show in the side panel as a device in iTunes. It does show on my desktop for the calendar, contacts and notes. I just want to restore it and put my music on it. So, how do I restore if it doesn't appear in iTunes?? Any ideas???

can you play music on the ipod?

have you tried resetting it?

Yeah I have reset but it never shows up as a device in iTunes.
