Does the M R stand for MacRumors? Not sure what the E 6 means? The picture looks like the Quicktime icon over a AirPort Base Station.Yes, MR=MacRumors. E6 is scientific notation for one million, as in 1.0E+06.
No, it is not an AirPort Base Station, but I did steal, er, borrow the graphic from an Apple product. Anybody recognize it?

Nope. The Q and the thing it's sitting on form a single graphic that Apple used on a product. I believe they have changed the graphic they use with that product, so I'm glad I saved a copy.

Is it an iMac dome viewed from a funny angle? :)

No. No.
I'll give you more of a clue. It's the icon of an Apple software product that a majority of Mac users don't use or have installed, although thousands of users do have it.

homerjward wins! This was the icon of QuickTime Streaming Server in Mac OS X Server Jaguar. You can see it partway down this page (http://www.schockwellenreiter.de/2002/12/15.html), for example.
In Server Panther, I think they use a new icon, maybe one of these:
