27" Harddrive failure

I have a 27" iMac. A few days ago, windows started doing scandisk every time I booted. No biggie I thought, and I went and disabled scandisk. I also found in Mac OS, that programs would randomly freeze. Still, I thought nothing of it.

Now my iMac won't boot, and it can't fix the drive. Should I bother to try to reinstall, or is my harddrive dead?

To think I was just unlucky when my Macbook failed. Seems my iMac is a lemon too.

If it helps, Windows works but I have experienced freezing in the past etc.

lol when i first saw the title of the thread (the first milleseconds) I thought you were talking about 27" harddrives... that would be a big hard drive :eek:

anyway your HDD is dead. don't bother trying to rensitall. see if you could recover any data if it wasn't backed up (you could use disk warrior to do so)

DiskWarrior is not a data recovery tool- it's something you use to try and make repairs beyond what Disk Utility is capable of. Data Rescue III (http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php) is, however.

To be honest, in the case of Windows I believe it may have been down to bad drivers. Lately Windows has been fine, so I'll see how it goes. I have reinstalled Mac OS, but I've now gotten everything backed up onto a server. Sadly I forgot to backup most of my files, but luckily this machine is relatively new so I haven't really lost much.

I'll post here again if I have any future problems.

Well, when our iMac G5's HDD died, we used disk warrior, and we were able to access the files of the HDD, and put them on an external device.
