so the other day my macbook started acting funny where it says if its charging or not. at first the power cord stopped working so i got a new one last night. now it says (not charging). but its been plugged in since last night and the power percentage has gone up to 39%. so its obviously charging. just so slow it doesn't recognize it...? and under About this mac, then the power tab, it says

Sounds like a problem with the power management on the logic board and not necessarily the charger itself.

I'm having a similar problem. Tried a SMC reset but no change. The light on the magsafe tip has been a bet erratic for quite some time -- usually going dim after a while (though always the right color) but now it's only showing a VERY faint green glow. The battery menu says not charging and the profiler says about the same as Scottabea's.

This is a 2008 vintage 15" MBP (the last of the old style before the current unibody casings)

Another interesting note: about a month ago one day the AC adaptor seemed not to be working at all for a while, but then started working again.

well now it won't power on at all 🙁 I guess I'll have to take it in. Should I take it to the Apple store or one of the 2 indie mac shops in Evanston?

Good thing I just got a time capsule!

Either one is going to tell you the same thing, you need a new logic board. Expect 5-10 days repair time (and a large bill if you don't have AppleCare or they think it isn't covered) Good luck 😀

Well I've been researching a bit, and it seems magsafe connectors are known for geting weak pin springs, and mine has a limp pin and all the symptoms seem to match up with others experiences. So I'm hoping it just a problem with the power adapter. I've heard apple will sometimes replace those out of warranty, so keeping fingers crossed.

Well turns out it is just a bad adaptor (the old stuck-pins in the magsafe). Apple store said it was out of the serial number range for replacement and wanted $60 for "repair (replacement)." Fortunately it looks like macbookadapter.com has a good price so I'll give them a try.
