Short answer to the OP:
- 5D has full frame sensor and is a bit slow. Good for landscapes and portraits, bad for sports and fast action photography.
- 7D has crop sensor, current features and is very fast. Good for fast action photography but rather limiting (due to crop sensor) for shooting landscapes as even ultra-wide lenses are not that wide.
Only buy 5D if you know you want it. It's very good in what it's good at, but you will be disappointed if you try to make it shine where it's not at its best.
Excellent point. The cameras are very different and it should be quite clear to someone which camera is right for him/her.

Actually, there are several ultra-wide lenses from 10-16mm that are plenty wide for cropped sensors. Also, 3.5 fps is fast enough for sports or birds photography. It's not as good as having more speed, but still fast enough for non spray and pray photographers.

I now have both cameras and can say that the 7D is pretty much better in every way except in image quality, and in that regard it's only slightly worse. I do see better color, dynamic range, and tonality in the 5D Mark II's images. And with higher ISO shots, it seems to be about a stop better, maybe more at the very highest ISOs.
