How do you save dvd movies onto your hard disk? I find it more convenient to just view without having to dig out the dvd. I know you can create a disk image with Disk Utility, but I don't know how reliable this is with dvds. Theoretically, it should work, but will take forever.

In my experience, Disk Utility has choked on the encryption. Try a program like Handbrake (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12987). Also, an uncompressed DVD image can be as much as 6-8GB!

search for this program "DVDBackup" (try www.versiontracker.com). It has worked flawlessly for me, and it only takes about an hour (on a 1ghz G4 w/ Superdrive) to copy.

Handbreak takes forever. DVD backup the Video_TS folder, use DVD2oneX to compress it (with or without extras). Good size, brunable onto a DVD with toast. Sweet.

I use DVD2oneX. It rocks.

Use MacTheRipper first. Oh, and you'll likely want a 1TB Lacie.

Man.. DVD2one is expensive! 49.99 Euro. $61+!!
DVD Backup, however, is freeware.

im starting to think there should be a DVD FAQ sticky.

FYI: DVD2OneX doesn't create a disc image, it lowers the resolution of the video tracks.

Sure, DVD2oneX further compresses the video track, but there's also an option to create a disc image (when you have MKISOFS installed) and this is useful if you want to burn a full disc copy.
