I've got to the point of making the actual .icn file.... or copying and pasting from photoshop into highlighted icon area... however I'm coming across one problem.

When I paste, or try to switch the icons.... THE TRANSPARENCY DOES NOT COME WITH. Sorry for all caps but I cannot figure out a thing. I've tried from .psd and .tif, both containing transparency, however when I go to replace my hdd icon, low and behold there is a hideous white background to the icon where I would love it to be transparent. Please help me :(

If you aren't using Iconographer, Get it. (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6492)

It supports full 8-bit grayscale masks.

Go to www.iconfactory.com and download/install Icon Builder for Photoshop. Make sure that when you use it, have everything merged into one layer, then export it to .icns. It should work.

How do people make raster icons that look good at any size?

The trick is to make the icon simple and awesome looking at high res. If you can put a checkmark of honesty beside those traits, then the icon will have those traits when resized down.
